Juno Beach
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/article7140282.ece Things are heating up! I wonder how much longer until something happens
Affentitten
Interesting. I wonder if they are deployed from Eilat. Pretty narrow and shallow waterway for a sub. As is the Gulf. Easy to get scraped by a tanker! I would be surprised if the various Arab countries are happy about Israeli subs transiting their waters.
Stalins Organ
They are much smaller than nuclear propelled subs - being only 1900t displacement submerged - and are based in the Med, deploying to the Red sea, and hte Indian Ocean & Persian Gulf through the Suez.
Affentitten
Wow. I am surprised to hear that Egypt lets Israeli subs through the Suez. Never thought they would accept that. Pretty risky too for the Israelis to expose their subs to anyone with a foxhole and an RPG!
Stalins Organ
They have a peace treaty you know - Egypt also maintains the blockade on Gaza!! And the Suez is open to military ships....so....even the Israeli's get to use it. I imagine there's a pretty tight security along the narrower bits of it!
Juno Beach
I think I understand now why Israel is sending their nuclear armed subs to Iran: U.N. Says Iran Has Fuel for 2 Nuclear Weapons Cordially, JB

StellarRat
They have a peace treaty you know - Egypt also maintains the blockade on Gaza!!The real reason they maintain it because they don't want a swarm of Palestinians coming illegally into their country (sound familiar?). Not because they want to help Israel.
JonS
The critical point of that story being with further enrichment. Oh, pish. Everyone knows that's the easy bit. It's the getting-the-ore-out-of-the-ground step that's the really technically challenging bit. Once you've done that, the rest is gravy.

It's the putting it into the ground in the first place that's the challenge. Michael

Juno Beach
I didn't know Israel had nuclear subs.... shows how I'm out of the loop http://www.fas.org/nuke/guide/israel/missile/popeye-t.htm In May 2000 Israel is reported to have secretly carried out its first test launches from two German-built Dolphin-class submarines of cruise missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. The missiles launched from vessels off Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean are said to have hit a target at a range of about 1,500 kilometers [about 930 statute miles]. Israel is reported to possess a 200kg nuclear warhead, containing 6kg of plutonium, that could be mounted on cruise missiles.
noxnoctum
Man it's just a matter of time till the world burns... Look how many world wars humanity has. It seems to be 3 or 4 per century, at minimum. We're due for a new one pretty soon. First one with nukes though.
Michael Emrys
Look how many world wars humanity has. It seems to be 3 or 4 per century, at minimum. Eh? What are you counting? I am accustomed to thinking that there have only been 3 or 4 truly global conflicts in the entire history of the race. But of course it all depends on how you define it, so let's hear yours.
