John Kettler
Don't know how many here frequent the HW:LG Forum, but I suspect many don't. Even so, I thought I'd pass on something Ketil posted there in the Napoleonic board game thread. The item seen at the link, the Von Reisswitz the Elder's Kriegspiel (literally, war game) is the basis for our hobby, for from it, everything else since springs, at least, on the land warfare side. Naval wargaming goes way back, too, but not to 1805. http://www.kriegsspiel.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=46&Itemid=58 Unlike the cardboard game boards or paper maps, some of us learned to play on, this one's wood and has modular terrain. In any event, I think you'll find the two-page article a worthwhile read. Regards, John Kettler

Herr Kruger
It might help if you spelled it out, or better yet, gave a link. I suspect he mens the HistWar : Les Grognards subforum here on this forum. I could be wrong, though!
blackbellamy
I had the AH version - or I guess you can call it a version if by version you mean something that's totally not like the original but it almost has the same name. Quickly left it behind and moved on to Squad Leader.
dieseltaylor
Great article. Dispiriting to find that the heritage is being lost. Thanks for the link. John Kettler
CoFarmer, Sorry. The Forum is for HistWar: Les Grognards, the forthcoming Napoleonic Warfare game. Here's the HW:LG Forum link. http://www.battlefront.com/community/forumdisplay.php?f=55 Here's the specific thread http://www.battlefront.com/community/showthread.php?t=83393 I simply extracted a salient item from a much broader discussion spanning a number of pages. This is the HW:LG game page, together with some video, screen shots, and a lot of info. http://www.battlefront.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=124&Itemid=174 Regards, John Kettler
MeatEtr
This was my fav board wargame, Crossbows and Catapults. Ok fine it's not really what your talking about. But as a kid I have fond memories of smashing my brothers castle. We would even take it a step further and make more buildings with decks of cards. Maybe even add some plastic army men to fill out the ranks. We also added rubber bands to our arsenals.
John Kettler
dieseltaylor, You're welcome! Shall have a look at the Vulgo-Silustrian War later. MeatEtr, Never bought the game (came close), but I think I snagged a catapult from it at some garage sale or similar event. ISTR it has a spring, though it looks like it uses torsion power.
