//Found the 199th INF BDE yet?//

Redcatchers.

Know about them very well.

They did not have their own Cav or armour in Vietnam. Instead they had a troop from 17th Cavalry assigned to them. Three platoons with 9 M113 APCs each. The APCs they used were equiped with gun turrents and each platoon had the fire power of three rifle companies. They were used more in the role of light tanks than for transport and fought at Phu Bac during TET. The first six months in Vietnam they used scout jeeps instead of tracks and in the early 70's had Sheridan light tanks added.

The brigade folded after leaving Vietnam but is being reformed probably to replace larger unit in Iraq for scaling down.

One thing about light infantry brigades: they don't work. Of the three that were used in Vietnam- two were combined with the 173rd Airborne as the Americal Division and only the 199th was left. The lack of support units forced the light brigades to beg and drain the resources of other units when trouble occured.

They were my first unit when I came in in '91. We were motorized then our full designation was 199 INF BDE (MOT)(SEP)(LIGHT ATTACK). We were the most parenthesised unit in the Army.

They reflagged to 2ACR(L) and now are a Stryker Brigade in Vilseck.
