Newsflash!!! Patch details and features!!!

We know you guys have been waiting patiently for news on the patch and the time has come to let the cat out of the bag, or at least give you a glimpse of the kitty.

For the last several weeks we have been conducting extensive external and internal testing on the upcoming patch and it looks like it is just about ready for release.

The major feature of this first patch is that it fixes the persistent game "freeze" issue that some people have reported. During our stress testing, none of the testers ever encountered a single lockup or freeze and this was from people that had lockups issues in the past. Obviously that will be good news for many of you.

The developers have also tweaked the command voice quing playback which means that if you give a command repeated times, for instance TURN LEFT, you will only hear it yelled out a single time even though the AI will carry it out as many times as you issued.

Other notable fixes being worked on include the Joystick Y-Axis, Dual Mode tweaks and some other odds and ends.

This patch should be released VERY SOON and along with the patch we are going to release a new Demo based on this updated version and it will feature a new demo scenario with more much more action and combat!

We still have a lot more in store with this game so stay tuned!

Hey guys, I have been just checking out a recent internal test build and there is now an option in the configuration panel to reverse the Joystick Axis. This has the effect of allowing you to select how the Y-axis (back and forth motion) works in both commander and gunner views. I am used to flight sims, so i like it so that when i push forward the sight goes down. Some people like it the other way. Now, you can choose whichever is easier for you... Of course, the driver controls are unaffected, pushing forward will accelerate and pulling back slows you down, no matter if Y-axis is reversed or not.

and in "when's the patch released" speaking of "a matter of days"

those were about 2 weeks ago, any new information, or what are days in comparison to eternity....

edit: to be serious: the Y-axis discussion lasts since the first release: it's been said by real T-72 tankers that pulling the cadillacs move the barrel up and pushing moves down: so why is there an option for to pick the direction? Like in my case I suppose many players "hold back" because of "minor" LOL issues like that. Couldn't a first aid patch have helped solved this problem? I know it's not your responsibility, but you are the closest to the dev's (who appearently shy to show up here- not to be eaten I guess smile.gif ), what are your ways to make them work faster, more efficient. Judging from repeatedly occuring days with no posts this forum breathes it's last sighs due to the failures in this game. And it's not worth it.

Btw I preordered SB Pro PE*, if it arrives before the patch, I'll completely remove it from HD, mind or whatever...

*make them aware that they are not alone in this tiny niche of tank (or better tactical simulation) of ground warfare, and they have a job to be done. Having played SB for 4 years now and still having fun with and still discovering new possibilities, it's hard to compete. Ok the grafics might be better, but the employment of any other forces in editor or while in battle is way superior to what we see here.

Well, guess what - we found a few issues with the first version(s) of the patch, and sent them back to the devs for improvements. Which has delayed it a little more than expected, but we now have what looks to be the final version in testing. 10 days after Matt's post I might add, that's not bad.

I see that you edited your post, Gato. Steel Beasts and T-72 are different games with different design goals and concepts. T72 was never meant to be the realistic tank simulation that SB undoubtedly is. It has evolved a bit during development (certainly after we got involved and tried to further reduce various arcade elements), but you cannot change a base concept once it's locked. So you get what you get.

Both games have their strengths and weaknesses. T72 graphical superiority goes beyond looks alone for example, but in how it simulates the combat environment (dust just to name one example, or deformable terrain to name another). But it lacks in other areas, no doubt, where SB delivers more.

But with these two games you have pretty much exhausted the current "competition" (and it's not, I just spoke with the SB guys the other day on the phone) in the market (and I won't count arcade stuff like that new PE Action game here even). So instead of eating the devs should they make an appearance here (and it's mainly language issues preventing them from coming here by the way, not your teeth smile.gif ), they should receive a lot of support for what they did - and did well.

I let myself to say few words about realism in t-72 game.

Game is very flexible - allows to configure difficulty on very flexible way, on so called full realism, with my knowledge ( not so big of course) i cannot find anything what could be named 'arcade element'. Physics is excellent, ballistic seems to be also correct, dont know about weapon strenght but for me its ok.

Basically game is HARD to play , and today it is in fact only one thing that makes diffrence between 'sim' and 'shooter' , becouse even totally arcade games ( doom3, call of duty) have very acceptable model of world, soon hardware Physics accelerators will be availble in shops...

One thing is bad in T-72 - cooperation with other units, as a addicted flight sims maniac i used to have more controll over 'geschwader' or 'rotte' smile.gif

But in my opinion game engine is very advanced especially AI module.

I think creators of t-72 found excellent ballance between realism and playability, and gave tool to controll that ballance ( advanced configuration tool)

Too much realism - bad :D War isnt nice thing

I don't think the freeze bug is a *minor fix* Gato, not to the people that encountered it anyway. That was the main reason for this first patch and took a great deal of time and effort to pin down and fix.

Also, for the last month and a half I have openly said that if anyone wanted to grab a beta copy of the patch to play with that I would send it to them, so any waiting since I made that announcement was by their/your choice.

Right now, the patch I have looks like it is the one that is going to be released. Here is the current list of issues addressed by it:

* Fixed lockups/freezes that some people reported

* Added configuration program option to reverse joystick Y Axis for gunner and commander view

* Added configuration program option to mute external soldier voices

* Improved functionality of 'Dual Mode'

* Improved text orientation in map mode

* Improved playback rate of commands

* Various typo corrections

If anyone wants the patch right now, I will email it you just like I have offered all along. The official release is scheduled to be literally any day now though and more than likely before the end of the week... Assuming all goes to plan...

First off, Thanks for sending me the patch Matt. My (im)patience was rewarded by 2 or so mb's of patch that have made the game VERY playable for me. I now basically have the recommended specs for the game (according to the manual) and each time I play I go and up the settings on something and BoF still runs fine. I can now use my x-45 and I'm really having fun. The graphics and effects are wonderful and I'm looking forward to starting my fisrt campaign. With that said-lets get that add on so we can do some serious MP action.

Again, thanks-I doubted you, but you lived up to your reputation.
