Voodoo3 Problems on the Mac

Recommended Posts

OK, now I have a Voodoo3 card in my beige G3/233 but I am still having video problems. I am getting the screen at a very low resolution (looks like blown up 800X600) and I can't see any of the information at the bottom of the screen. I have tried toggling the resolution and but that only seems to be making it worse. I have tried it at 1280X1024 and 1024X768. I am using the Voodoo3 3000 drivers for the Mac.

Any ideas how I can fix this? I am running CMBO with the latest patch and no special mods.

Thanks,

TH

Not sure if CM works with voodoo or not, but anyway.

1. Trash CM preferences from system:preferences.

2. Make sure there are no ATI extensions or control panels left in the system.

3. If it still doesnt work, you could try reverting to an older system version. Like 8.6 or something. 3dfx has been dead for a while, the drivers might not work with OS9.

I tried deleting the ATI extensions and that didn't solve the problem. Going back to 8.6 is not really an option because I use this computer as a server for my OS X systems and that requires IP networking. 8.6 doesn't have that - 9 does. Anyone else got any ideas? I tried taking a screenshot of the symptom but it came out garbage (an interesting phenomenon).

Thanks,

Tom

What version of the 3dfx drivers are you using ? The latest I could find are the 1.1.13's, which are a bit questionable since they were released after 3dfx closed down.

One site that linked to them was Macgamefiles. Supposedly they work with the Voodoo 3's, but not everything looks good with them (and CMBO may be one of those programs).

You can also download a driver and ROM update from here (click the first 'here'). This is linked from a page on Voodoofiles.com ). These drivers may not work with OS 9 however (since they mention OS 8).

What was your previous display adapter and what problem did you have with it ? Was this some built-in ATI display on your G3 ?

I am using the 1.1.3 beta drivers and I have updated the ROM to Voodoo3 3000 status (according to Apple system profiler).

I have never been able to use CMBO on this particular system. My problem comes from the fact that I recently upgraded my Powerbook G3/333 to a Powerbook G4 12" which only boots into OS X - and doesn't run CMBO as a result.

In order to be able to play the game I have transferred it over to my G3/233 beige minitower which is still running OS 9.2.2 but then I discovered that a RAVE 128 with 6 MB of VRAM won't run the program either. So, to make a long story short, I picked up at cheap Voodoo3 card (the ATI's were MUCH more expensive) to see if I could make it run with that.

I haven't been able to make the game run with anything other than the drivers I currently have installed. I had the Voodoo3 2000 drivers but that caused a hard crash (white box - usually a bus error) every time I launched the game.

At least now it doesn't crash but it does have a serious display problem. Everything is real big and the screen essentially bleeds off the edge of the display. For example, I can only see the very top of the info box at the bottom of the CMBO screen. I have tried the game set at 1024X768 (the resolution I used on the old PowerBook) and at 1280X1024 (the optimum resolution for my 17 LCD). Neither setting made any difference.

I'll see if I can find older drivers at the links you suggested.

Thanks everyone for the input and I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I feel for ya! :(

REALLY

I am in the same boat

Many Mac users here MUST upgrade their laptops to a new OSX only version, (I too MUST take a new G4 12inch at the end of May).

I am a Mac Technologist and as far as I can tell there is no solution to the no RAVE on OSX problem.

I am now on the Mac Game Developers Mailing list and I posted a question or request to have RAVE work in OSX and all those programers LAUGHED AT ME, I mean they really thought I was NUTS!

This situation is very frustrating, I wish you all the best of luck with your Voodoo card on that biege G3 .

There don't seem to be any Voodoo3 drivers out there that work. One set crashes the computer hard and the other causes the weird graphics problem. I have a line on an ATI Radeon 7000 with 32 MB which I will be getting this weekend - I hope that will work better.

Thanks for all of the help.
