Herr Kruger
In a Quick Battle I am playing, I had a Marder III stationery near the crest of a hill as an enemy tank was cresting another hill diagonally across the map. I had the good angle and knew that the tank's turret would have to turn before he could shoot... but since I am not very familiar with this game yet I was not sure if I got a "lucky shot" or can expect to get similar results a lot of the time... the result was I knocked out the enemy tank first shot.. it turned out to be a Sherman VC Firefly. Yes, I'm a newbie! lol
Moriarty
You had a combination of luck (Marders aren't known for living very long, thin armor, high profile) and other specifics the game takes into consideration -- like crew experience, angle of shot, angle of armor, range, etc., etc. There are those who can cite chapter and verse (I'm not one of them) about what goes into the shot calculation as to whether you hit and deflect, miss, hit and damage or hit and knock out. However, my considered opinion, having taken in all the information is: Some days you eats the bear; some days the bear eats you.
Herr Kruger
Well, in another Quick Battle I have had another success with a Marder III! So far I like them... but yeah, I know about the poor armor on them, and also they do not carry a large payload of ammunition. In the battle I talked about above my one remaining Marder III is pretty much useless as he has no high explosive left The other one was taken out by a PIAT team at about 120 - 160 m. The new succes was this... Turn 2 I had a Marder with a nice narrow field of fire looking down from a hill onto part of the road I suspected my opponent would advance at least one piece or armor... his tank spotted my Marder first.. we both shot and missed, falling short... his next shot streaked by right over the shoulder of my gunner and into the sky, and my Marder hit and penetrated the front turret at 300 + m... yay! jwxspoon
I'll take the Hetzer over the Marder every time due to the low profile and front armor.
JasonC
If you pay 6 more points for the Marder II model you will get more HE, to do something to infantry after your AT stalking proves successful.
Herr Kruger
One disadvantage of these Marder IIIs, one of my opponents threw down some artillery and my crew seemed to run, without taking a hit to their Marder III and it was preventing a Sherman from advancing with impunity... Grrr

Warmaker
Whatever PIAT team took your Marder out at that range must've been good or damn lucky. I literally can't do a damn thing with the Marders. A grazing .50 cal burst can knock it out for goodness' sake! Hetzers are the endall answer if you desire cheap, effective, and mobile AT defense. Herr Kruger
Holy, nice low profile on the Hetzer! In one QB I am playing my Hetzer just took out an enemy Sherman IIA ! It missed on the first shot, enemy shot ricocheted at ~ 135 m, and I penetrated through the turret next shot. Seconds later a Panzershreck hit it as well... no crew casualties though, I think. Also, in a demo game, one American crew just abandoned its tank after spending some time wandering into the area I was dropping artillery hehe Kind of like my Marder III did above... Moriarty
Haven't seen the CM Borg in a long time, but I think it's apparent that resistance is futile, you have been assimilated. Good luck and good hunting to you.
Gen-x87H
Sometimes luck can be against you. Like the 3 times now I have lost a Panther to a frontal shot from a damn Daimel AC at 400 meters! Gen

Herr Kruger
A little update : I have taken three Marder IIIs into battle so far and only one survived the entire battle but I have taken two Marder IIs into battle and both survived.. while of three Hetzers one has perished. I don't know why, but I feel an affinity for those Marders hehe...
