legend42
I know this is obviously way early and 2-3 years away but what is the purpose of the so called "engine re-write"?What is hoped to be accomplished by this re-write?

Michael Emrys
I can't hope to give you a comprehensive answer, but in brief, the original engine was written to accomodate existing computers. Four years have since passed and as we all know, the power and speed of the later models has far surpassed the ones the game was written on. A rewrite will permit that power to be accessed to advantage. Plus, Charles now has some better ideas on how the code can be written to accomodate more features and run more efficiently. Edit: Just found the following by Dan in "New Game or Expansion Pack?" thread: Basically you dont have to worry, we have always planned that the rewrite will be much more 'upgradable', for lack of a better word. We want to be able to easily add vehicles, buildings, scenarios, terrain, and even features, etc without any difficulty. We are only in initial planning stage at the moment, but when we have more info for you guys about our direction in the future.Michael [ September 03, 2002, 10:53 PM: Message edited by: Michael emrys ]
Pvt. Ryan
Plus, every time someone has suggested a feature that the current engine can't handle, we are either told by BFC or assume on our own that the feature will have to wait for the new game engine. With all the cool features that we have come to expect in the re-write (CMII), the next CM is going to be the mother of all computer wargames! arax3
Kev: Played the Zitadelle scenario as the Reds and got a DRAW. I have picked up some further ideas about placement of Red Army forces which may enable me to gain a victory. How are you doing. L3
Chad Harrison
We just asked this about a week ago, and nothing is set in stone at all. They are running through ideas now, and hopefully, in the coming months, we will get some bones of information about CM2 (note that CMBB is not CM2, CM2 will incorporate the engine rewrite). Schrullenhaft
Actually Chad CMBB is CM2. The engine rewrite has been denoted by roman numerals which will be CMII for the next engine (something that Steve laid out last year on the forum). Sorry if the correction seems a bit anal on my part, but I think it's worth it to keep people from being confused. The engine rewrite, CMII, may see the light of day as the next game after CMBB, CM3 (tenatively slated to cover the Mediterranean/North Africa). As others have said the engine rewrite will add all sorts of new features (including making it easier to add items, organize them and change their stats, etc. - for BTS/BFC). However I'm sure that a large number of request still won't be possible with the next engine. A lot should be accomplished and improved, but many things will still remain beyond either the capabilities of personal computers (which should be significantly enhanced in horsepower by then) or reasonable coding time (though there'll be a lot of time to code the new engine, there will still be some things that are a 'black hole' of programming time). We will all have huge expectations for the next engine (which will undoubtedly cause Charles an aneurysm), but we can only speculate at what may make it in. There are further engine rewrites tenatively planned too (the next time you see NWE or the OstFront may be with the CMIII engine). Again, things are subject to change, but CM will be an ever-evolving piece of code.
