Guns in buildings: HOWTO

Recommended Posts

this is for the former squad leader players who miss 'guns in buildings.' there is a way:

what you do is buy guns, then go into the map editor and preview mode, then place the guns where you will put buildings. then 'go' back to map editing mode and put buildings where you know the guns are. go into preview mode again and make sure you placed the buildings correctly.

if you place the gun first (lock it down), then put a building there, 'walla walla' you have a gun inside of a building.

it will be able to rotate and fire in the battle normally.

caution: for realism's sake, you probably don't want to put a huge 88mm gun inside of a building! instead use it for 50mm at, 20mm aa, and the likes.

Just read an account of the 23rd Hussars (11th AD) fighting in Antwerp. Apparently they had to deal with guns on top of buildings. I have also read an account of German tanks being concealed in buildings in Cassino. Perfect hull-down positioning in a smidgeon. Agreed it probably did not happen often, and with the impossibility to fortify houses in CM (although you could do it with a pillbox to simulate a fortified house... Hmmm, there's an idea...) it is a bit suidcidal.

In Stephen Ambrose's Citizen Soliders there's a story (which came from Belton Cooper's Death Traps), how the Germans hauled PAK40 75mm AT guns into a church steeple to prevent American advances.

Nice tips.

Another example of placing a PaK inside building was in Villes Bocage. The British placed at least 1 PaK (6 pdr, iirc) inside the building and ambushed Wittman's tank, making it immob.

The Russians hid both tanks and guns in buildings. It was common practice with them.

The German tank buster in the Stuka was an expert at flying low and slow over villages looking for tanks protruding out of the homes below. He recounts this a couple of times in his book.

Erik Schmidt (combat engineer)recounts block busting in Kiev where the Russians placed AT and HE guns in buildings at street intersections.

Something to see in CM2....
