The AVRE--Why Kingfish should blame Canada!

Recommended Posts

Was innocently reading bits from the Chamberlain & Ellis, BRITISH AND AMERICAN TANKS OF WORLD WAR II when I discovered something I never knew. The AVRE is basically a Canadian invention born from the suggestion of a Lt. Donovan of the Royal Canadian Engineers. Per page 70, "he suggested adapting an existing tank" to carry out the role of transporting combat engineering teams charged with breaching heavy beach defenses, and that tank had to be "heavily armoured." This was one of the hard-won lessons learned from the debacle at Dieppe.

Learned something else from pages 69-70 in the Crocodile segment. The trailer was jettisonable if hit or simply out of flame fuel. No more flamethrower capability, but still a gun tank.
