The Japanese Army and Singapore

Since the other thread is now about whether Jap is an insulting term or not, I thought I’d start a new thread on this subject. It’s been implied in the previous thread the Japanese Army was somewhat “second rate”; yet they were able to inflict one of the most humiliating defeats in British history at Singapore. Were the Commonwealth forces defending Singapore “third rate”?

There's a book by a Singaporean historian on Operation Matador.

Basically, he shows that the British Far East Command had thought about the problem, and had good plans for land defense of Malaya & Singapore. Unfortunately the plan called for (& required) twice the resources they actually ended up with, due to what was going on elsewhere in the world...
