mensch
Hello Folks, Last year a friend of mine upgraded GirlFriend 1.2.4 to Wife 1.O and found that it's a memory hog leaving very littie system resources for other applications. He also noticed that Wife 1.O is spawning Child-Processes which further consume valuable resources. No mention of this particular phenomena was included in the product brochure or the documentation, though other users have informed him that this is to be expected due to the nature of the application. Not only that, Wife 1.O installs itself such that 'it is always launched at system initialization where it can monitor all other system activity. He's finding that some applications such as PokerNight 1.0.3, BeerBash 2.5, and PubNight 7.2 are no longer able to run in the system at all, crashing the system when selected (even though they always worked fine before). At installation, Wife 1.0 provides no option as to the installation of undesired Plug-Ins such as MotherInLaw 55.8 and BrotherInLaw Beta release. Also, system performance seems to diminish w ith each passing day. Some features he'd like to see in the upcoming wife 1.1 . - A " Don't remind me again " button. - Minimize button. - An install shield feature that allows Wife 1.1 to be installed with the option to uninstall at anytime without the loss of cache and other system resources. - An option to run the network driver in promiscuous mode which would allow the system hardware probe feature to be much more useful. I myself decided to avoid all of the headaches associated with Wife 1.0 by sticking with Girlfriend 2.7. Even here, however, 1 found many problems. Apparently you cannot install Girlfriend 2.7 on top of Girlfriend 1 .5. You must uninstall Girlfriend 1.5 first. Other users say this is a long standing bug which 1.0 should have been aware of. Apparently different versions of Girifriend have conflicts over shared use of the 1/0 port. Simultaneous use almost never works. To make matters worse, the uninstall program for Girifriend 1.5 doesn't work very well, leaving undesirable traces of the application in the System. All versions of Girifriend continually popup littie annoying messages about the advantages of upgrading to Wife 1.0 ***** BUG WARNING ****** lf you try to install Mistress 1.1 before uninstalling Wife 1.0, Wife 1.0 deletes all MSMoney files and performs an uninstall herself. Reports have been filed regarding this auto-uninstall feature, but at this time there is no known solution. After Wife 1.0 performs an uninstall, Mistress 1.1 may now refuse to install, claiming insufficient system resources ** BUG WORK-AROUNDS To avoid the above bug, try installing Mistress 1.1 at a different location and never run any file transfer applications such as Laplink 6.0. Mistress 1.1 should be treated as shareware. Shareware applications have been known to carry viruses that may also infect you and Wife 1.0. Care should be taken when using shareware. Another solution would be to run Mistress 1.1 via a UseNet provider under an anonymous name. Here again, beware of the viruses which can accidentally be downloaded from the UseNet-- use a virus shield available at pharmacles everywhere. Be care and use the Mistress 1.1 and Wife 1.0 nameing rules to avold conflicts between the two different domains. Ohterwise the hole net will be crash and you have to install the system at an other location again. This makes a lot of trouble and you have to use several DISCO 1.x program versions to reach the goal. ----- Programers Note ----- Other known conflicts with Wife 1.0, it appears she has programes like girls night out 3.3.4 but it starts to conflict when you run PubNight 7.2 saying girls night out 3.3.4 is harmless and is safe unlike PubNight 7.2 which may cause the instilation of StripClub evening 4.5 [This message has been edited by mensch (edited 11-24-2000).]

Guest tero
Other known, unlisted features to watch out for: Internally spawn extensions and/or ad ons either native or imported from other OS installs prior to the upgrade from Prospect to Girlfirend to Wife v1.0. These spawns are known as Child vX.0 that at first seem harmless. If they are allowed to be grown they will grown links to MSMoney that drain the resources effrectively and completely. One possible workaround is to uninstall the Wife v1.0 before it has logged 262 800 hrs OR do a version change from Wife v1.0 to a new version of Girlfriend which has logged no more than 175 200 hrs. That seems to be the critical time when the Biological Clock Beta starts affecting the Wife V1.0 adversely making it want to replicate itself using whatever OS it has been introduced to. Warning: sometimes the Biological Clock Beta can contaminate the OS as well. It can also ininitate long before the 262 800hrs marker is near. Silver Stars
For your sake I hope niether versions of Girlfriend 2.X or Wife 1.X interact through explorer to scan forum entries, other wise subprogram Wife-nike 2.1 might interact with Norton's Assware 7.23, and that stings.... ------------------ "From the Mountains of the Moon, Down the Valley of the Shadow, Ride Boldly Ride", the Shade replied, "If you seek for El Dorado." Guest tero
No need to. They have built-in Mind reader v9.51 which will scan any and all brain activity and intercept any wondering eye motions or other inpure thoughts from being acted on. If you are within range. joeski
LOL Good one mensch. I just Edited girlfriend 2.7 and recompiled, Had to run her through debug for years before she was upgraded to wife 1.0 But being a user I have still run into a couple of fixes. Hoping for an add on patch. ------------------ "If you're in a war, instead of throwing a hand grenade at the enemy, throw one of those small pumpkins. I now have Child V3.0 and it also installed Grandchild v2.0. I cant run Mistress 1.1 or GirlFriend 1.2.4 as I'm out of MSMoney files. I might have to do a compleat uninstall. Priest
I have a Girlfriend 10.0 BETA that seems to be doing really well on all the testbeds. I have no CM compatibility issues and the program even queries about subroutine Fionn PBEM Program. Also I can run one GUYSNIGHTOUT application once a week. Now if we can just get the WIFE series to work this well so I won't have to become what my screen name suggests. ------------------ Sir are you sure you want to go to red alert...it would mean changing the bulb -Priest
Colin
Whoa!!! Just found something you guys should know about! With some hard work I manage to install Girlfriend 1.5 over top of Girlfriend 1.0. Initally the benefits are incredible, however they conflicted and both ran uninstall programs. ------------------ And if we abandon any platform, I can assure you it will not be the Macintosh. -Steve My website! Guest tero
>I have a Girlfriend 10.0 BETA that seems to be doing really well on all the testbeds. Be warned. All models can initiate system lock up, usually Headache v1.0 or similar, which freezes all activity indefinitely. Especially if the OS performs an illigal act, like Guysnightout v.X.0 or is about to perform one out of schedule. Raze
There was a limited edition of Girlfriend v4.5 that would automatically upgrade itself to wife v1.0. But this particular version included a shareware version of MSMoney as well as a couple of other useful utilities. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure that this release cannot be uninstalled, and can only be gotten rid of by deleting (which can cause any number of nasty items to occur including incarceration 25.0+)! ------------------ "The art of fighting without fighting..."
