Saw something I've never seen in a computer game before. During a Quick Battle, I had placed Lt. Kroh with two squads in open ground and delayed giving them orders for a minute (while under fire by Americans) in order to sort things out.

Well, in the next movie-turn Lt. Kroh gets up and runs to the nearest patch of woods (toward the enemy) and a few seconds later both squads get up and follow him!!!

Excuse the caps, but this was my thought: LT. KROH IS MOVING FORWARD ON HIS OWN AND URGING HIS MEN ONWARD!!!

This was fantastic. What a game! I hated to finally have to surrender Lt. Kroh and his men (sob!) but they were being cut to pieces.

Last night, I had a barn blown up with two British squads and a leader in it, with many casualties and a quick end to the game.

Even my wife stands behind me watching me play Combat Mission and is fascinated by it!!

I lost some Elite Paratroops because they got it into their feeble little elecronic heads to charge an MG42 (LMG) position. I also had an MMG spontaneously pick up and move into a victory location house to provide covering fire for some guys advancing alongside the house. A fine line between bravery and stupidity.

Last night I did a quick combat- SS vs. English. I was SS and saw an amazing bit of work by one of my PaK75-43's. This gun engaged and destroyed 3 Cromwell's, 2 White Scout Cars, 3 Humbars, and 2 M5A1's (plus 5 infantry losses).

All of this while under fire from several platoons of infantry and vehicles. Half the losses were inflicted when half the gun crew had been put out of action. Definitely tops my list of heros at the moment.

(In the same game I had a flamethrower hidden in a building charged by an English platoon. Unfortunately, he waited to flame them until they were in the building with them. The building caught fire and both sides were killed).

Warning!!!

The higher quality troops in CM often don't wait for your orders to act.

E.g. I had two half-squads of crack troops close assault a King Tiger. Well, they ran out of the building they were in, ran the 30 metres to the KT and arrived just as an AP shot from one of my TDs took it out.

If they'd been green or regular they'd have simply stayed there and been cut down by the escorting German infantry BUT, without orders, these guys said "uhoh, Tiger's KO'ed but there's German infantry around.. We're out of here" and ran right back into the building they just came from before turning and pouring fire into the German infantry just 20 metres behind them wink.gif.

I didn't suffer a single casualty to my troops cause the AI realised that they couldn't close-assault a KO'ed Tiger and decided to get them back into cover.

Great TacAI isn't it? wink.gif

Bravest thing I've seen so far.

In a quick battle I played about a week ago a green US infantry squad in foxhole right behind a stone wall spends 1-2 turns getting hammered. There are only 3 guys left in the 12 man squad and they've ducked down out of sight. I send a King Tiger up to the wall along with another one off to their right to overrun these guys and there adjoining pesky squad mates in the next foxhole over. Tank comes up to wall and "stops" right at the end of the turn. 3 dudes still are keeping their head down. I decide to stop the tank's movement temporarily during next orders phase. Next movie starts and about 15 seconds into the turn these 3 guys decide it's time to do something. They jump up and lob 2-3 gernades (maybe one was rifle grenade?) at the tank from 5 meters. They knock out the tank. The full 5 man crew bails out and a small firefight breaks out. The 3 US infantry guys kill all five of the crew. Next turn they come under heavy fire and run for the rear. 2 of them are taken out in the process and one guy finally makes it to safety.

Mikester out.

I had a damn limey crack Par troop squad run across an open park through two MG and one half-track MG and three inf sqaud (all SS vet+) fire just to flop a sachel on top of my stug who was systematically pushing the English Paratroopers out of the buildings in Arnhem. I just gaped as I watched. I even could hear the bagpipes play as I watched them start their suicidal sprint.

AND totally pissed they not only made it but blew my last STUG!!!

I did make 'em pay on their way out though. But geeze, I REALLY needed that stug(as it was saving countless lives doing the dirty work of house clearing/demoing smile.gif ) and thought I had it MORE than well covered.

I just find it amazing that they could run that fast with those HUGE BRASS BALLS.

Maybe BTS should look carefully at how they modeled BRASS BALLS in the game. I'm mean cause I should have heard them CLACKING from a mile off. In fact I should have heard the town clacking like crickets cause it was crawling these brass balled brits.

Not very realistic. smile.gif

GreasyPig: If you click on the unit and hit ENTER, you can see the info for the unit. IIRC, the "Brass Balls" factor for the British Para Units is something like 1.5 to 2.0 (whereas a green infantry unit is around 0.5 - which equates to "Numb Nuts"). BTS did a really good job modeling this factor into the game. I have had an AI Panzershreck team that must have had a Brass Balls rating of 5.0, since it stood up to a whole column of Shermans and fired off three rounds in between MG and main gun bursts. One round hit a tank and another took out a halftrack before the shreck team entered Valhalla.

Mannheim Tanker,

Im very happy with CMBO and the fact that BTS modeled BRASS BALLS. But why even do it at all since its not even close to "REALISTIC". I mean everyones heard the:

CLACK....CLACK....CLACK of the ball-bearing pendulum perpetual motion thingy. Right?

Well thats the sound that that this paticular paratrooper should have made while "WALKING".

and

CLACK.CLACK.CLACK for "RUNNING"

and

CLICKCLICKCLICK for "SPRINTING"

and

CLICKCLACK...CLICKCLACK...CLICKCLACK when they "SKIP". (which I hear is common amongst British Paratroopers)

But BTS didnt take in account for this. Its totally unrealistic (IMHO). For crying out loud, Stevie Wonder should be able to call in -precise- arty on these boys, But nooo.

Unless of course these boys had their legs crossed and HOPPED across the open field. But then we still have a problem, cause the squad motion is screwed.

I had my wn amazing story of a superhuman squad. I had a SS squad of 11 men in a house on the far right flank of my village. It turned out to be the main thrust point of the American attack. Though they were supported be 2 half tracks, they alone managed 47 (yes 47) infantry casualties at a loss of 9 of their own. They even charged an immobilized Sheman that was in the middle of map. They didn't knock it out, but it distracted the Sherman long enough for another sqaud charging from the left to get close enough and knock it out. They should be awarded the Iron Cross.
