ironcross
BTS have produced a first rate GAME (notice i,ve put game in caps). this GAME recreates world war two actions. It is not a recreation of anything else that occured at this time. They have enabled it to be be played from either side, lets face it, it would be boring playing just one side. however if you do not want to play as a german (or allied) then dont, Its not compulsory. However WW11 is still for a lot of people fresh, my father lost 2 brothers in the war,and like people in the whole of europe had to suffer terror bombing.Yet whilst serving in the army in germany i met and married a german woman, should i have not because of her familys past?. If people like reading or visiting sites that are about the waffen ss or the battle of stalingrad, is that wrong. No it is not, after all to learn about the mistakes the horror, if these sites/books didnt exist how would we try to ensure that these things didnt happen again. What is WRONG (and i,ve seen no apology yet) is going on about Gassing people.I suggest that if people think(and im VERY glad that 99.9% do not agree with him)that bringing that subject up is okay, then take a walk as i have done around Belsen, see if you can comprehend the sheer terror that those poor people felt. Look at the railway sidings and think if you where on that train, if you could make such a flippant remark. I have no problem with peoples screen names or if they visit an ss site or one about hamster sex, however bringing up the gas chambers is and should be a ban
M Hofbauer
yep. I concur, couldn't have said it better. maybe I could add that CM is really sensitive for such people to give it a bad name if unchecked, as Dr Brian has shown us there are a lot of people who will readily throw CM and the rest of us into one trashcan with such people. Guest Germanboy
Ironcross, it is always a relief to see some reasoned and mature thinking. Well said. ------------------ Andreas
Big Iron
Yeah, another perspective that proves he is correct would be this is a game forum. As he said in all caps GAME. If this GAME was dealing with a sociological simulation of some kind on how the Nazis gained control of power or kept it or whatever their motivation for doing such a thing was then I suppose it would be on topic. However, this GAME deals with tactics and this forum, more or less, deals with the historical accuracy of the weapons that implement those tactics. For historical accuracy's sake, I have no problem with SS units and such. But it is the same as a MG42 or a Sherman that is modeled correctly to me. It is a tactial simulation so the SS moniker is just an accurate representation of a unit that was involved in some action somewhere. Same as always in games I have played for 25 years: Nazis ... cool weapons, excellent armed forces, really bad politics. I don't think about it further than that because it is just the tactical portion of the historical simulation that I enjoy playing. Pvt. Ryan
I don't find it offensive to discuss gas chambers and the other horrors of WWII, but it is offensive to refer to them as JP did. However, BTS has tried to keep the discussion in this particular forum on the topic of CM. Granted, we do go off on tangents, but most people are not offended by the topics of vermin, favorite war movie, etc. Well, I guess some people are offended by hamsters. ------------------ No me llamo Samuel, me llamo Pedro! Rarg
Well said Ironcross. I like to visit and read abot Waffen SS and other german related sites, but in a stricly historical concept. I also belive that european people is still very sensitive about WWII and nazi period and the words said in a international board like this must be cautiosly chosen to not hurt suceptibilities. I think JP words demo only his lack of maturity to understand these aspects.
Grognerd_Fogman
Nice and serious post Iron. This might be a good thread to tell a little story of mine. I grew up in Washington state, USA, an was adopted at a very early age (1-1/2). I did not know my heritage and neither did my super parents. I loved all of the WWII movies and watched them side by side with my dad when I was little. I always loved the German material the best for some reason. Maybe cause they appeared to have the coolest looking armor, weapons, uniforms, marching and the whole works. My favorite symbol was the swastika and used to pencil it on many futuristic looking cars that I loved to draw. Now don't get me wrong, I liked it because of how cool it looked. At the time I knew nothing of the Waffen SS, Nazi-ism or anything of the gas chambers. All I knew was that Germany wanted control of the world, and that in itself was bad, and put me on the Allies side for sure. I always wondered what drew me to like the German "stuff" over the allied. Well it just so happened that a talk-show like event happened to me 4 years ago when I turned 34. I got a letter in the mail from someone in Washington state (Currently live in Virginia) stating that certain persons were looking for me. I responded and low an behold it was my never known family!! It was my father, half sister and brother who wanted to find out who I was and what had become of me. A few days later and after many tears of joy, I got to see a picture of them and their families. Try and imagine not knowing what your blood family looks like, and the fact that you may never know. To make a long story short, I found out that I was of German descent and my real last name was Schneider. They all live in California now and was descended from a great grandfather who came here from Baden Baden, GE (hope that's right). I just thought it was a kinda interesting story to share. I did visit the SS website out of curiousity and even though I don't believe in anything evil that might have been done in WWII, it does have alot of really good pictures of armor an men in uniforms. Have a great day all... [This message has been edited by Grognerd_Fogman (edited 09-03-2000).]
