OT - And a Happy Bastille Day...

Recommended Posts

...to all our French friends. I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet. By now, no doubt people are jostling for a good seat on Champs de Mars for the fireworks.

I know we Americans often get down on our French comrades, but think of all they have given us: Brigitte Bardot, Plastique Bertrand, Vanessa Paradis, French kissing...

Allons enfants de la Patrie,

Le jour de gloire est arrivé !

Contre nous de la tyrannie !

L'étendard sanglant est levé (bis)

Entendez-vous dans nos campagnes

Mugir ces féroces soldats ?

Ils viennent jusque dans vos bras.

Egorger vos fils, vos compagnes !

Refrain

Aux armes citoyens,

Formez vos bataillons

Marchons, marchons

Qu'un sang impur

Abreuve nos sillons

1

Que veut cette horde d'esclaves,

De traîtres, de rois conjurés ?

Pour qui ces ignobles entraves

Ces fers dès longtemps préparés ? (bis)

Français, pour nous, ah! quel outrage

Quels transports il doit exciter ?

C'est nous qu'on ose méditer

De rendre à l'antique esclavage !

(au Refrain)

2

Quoi ces cohortes étrangères !

Feraient la loi dans nos foyers !

Quoi ! ces phalanges mercenaires

Terrasseraient nos fils guerriers ! (bis)

Grand Dieu! par des mains enchaînées

Nos fronts sous le joug se ploieraient

De vils despotes deviendraient

Les maîtres des destinées.

(au Refrain)

3

Tremblez, tyrans et vous perfides

L'opprobre de tous les partis,

Tremblez ! vos projets parricides

Vont enfin recevoir leurs prix ! (bis)

Tout est soldat pour vous combattre,

S'ils tombent, nos jeunes héros,

La France en produit de nouveaux,

Contre vous tout prêts à se battre

(au Refrain)

4

Français, en guerriers magnanimes

Portez ou retenez vos coups !

Épargnez ces tristes victimes,

A regret s'armant contre nous (bis)

Mais ces despotes sanguinaires,

Mais ces complices de Bouillé,

Tous ces tigres qui, sans pitié,

Déchirent le sein de leur mère !

(au Refrain)

5

Nous entrerons dans la carrière

Quand nos aînés n'y seront plus,

Nous y trouverons leur poussière

Et la trace de leurs vertus (bis)

Bien moins jaloux de leur survivre

Que de partager leur cercueil,

Nous aurons le sublime orgueil

De les venger ou de les suivre !

(au Refrain)

6

Amour sacré de la Patrie,

Conduis, soutiens nos bras vengeurs

Liberté, Liberté chérie

Combats avec tes défenseurs ! (bis)

Sous nos drapeaux, que la victoire

Accoure à tes mâles accents

Que tes ennemis expirants

Voient ton triomphe et notre gloire !

(au Refrain)

I know the Beatles are supposed to break in by now singing "All You Need is Love", but that's for another day.

It was a common custom at that time, in the more romantic females, to see their soldier husbands and sweethearts as Greek heroes, instead of the whoremongering, drunken clowns most of them were. However, the Greek heroes were probably no better, so it was not so far off the mark--Flashman

Well, I'm an American living in Paris, so I guess I'll have to answer for our French friends, since they are all at the Champs de Mars watching the fireworks! Me, I'm gonna wait till I hear 'boom, boom' outside my window then step out on the balcony and watch it.

And in the meantime, I probably got enough time for a couple turns of Combat Mission (see, I got this thread back on topic!!

Best regards to our companions in arms. As noted above, the US would not be w/out French aide in the Revolutionary war, later it was Lafayette we are here.......Now it is as friends and family, even if we disagree from time to time. Vive La France

Lafayette, we are still here! Merci!

After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. They told him nothing, except that the sky might fall on their heads.

Well thank you all

One small precision Plastique or Plastic Bertrand is Belgian wink.gif

Well, you told everybody about fireworks, music, dancing, but nobody talked about the military parade with grand uniform(another french specialty back from Napoleon). It was complete even with Leclerc MBT on the Champs Elysées, HAwkeye, AWACS, Mirages in the air and of course the "Patrouille de France".

Wow I love Berlioz version of Marseillaise cool.gif

Anyway, thanks all for your comment, it's nice to see relations between us and our american fellows can be enjoyable... And that was a great Bastille day BTW. smile.gif

Thanks all for that.

The fireworks was a great soundtrack to PBEM with.

Now what I can't understand is why the Brits shelled my Wespe with uncolorful ammo.

We had quiet a night and the Berlioz Marseillaise with military and opera singers was a hair raiser.

PS: A Free Frenching PBEM anyone?
