paullus
What would you guys consider to be the best choice for close-in infantry? I like to defend at night or in fog (just a personal preference)and have tried various grouping of units (found out the hard way that night and fog don't or shouldn't mix when you've selected a bunch of MG-42's that can't see more than 5m in front of them. Fallschirmjaeger squads seem to do pretty well, with SS not far behind, but what would be the best to pick in low-visibility defensive positions? jgdpzr
I would think SMGs would be the optimal squad due to their close range firepower.
Fionn
Gebirgsjaeger units. NO CONTEST AT ALL!
paullus
Thanks guys, I think I will try the mountain troops tonight (after I finish wipping up on some Canadians). Do they have Fausts?
Jarmo
What makes the Gebirgsjaeger's so good? Other than cool uniforms? I've found volksgrenadier SMG squad to kick ass at close range.
Jarmo
OK, I tried the Gebirgsjaegers in a scenario against a large infantry attack. Lost 25 of the guys, killed 159 americans. I have to agree they're one effective bunch
von Lucke
In CM yer typical Gebirgsjaeger (Mountain) zug consists of 3 MP44 / 3 MP40 / 2 MG42 / 2 Kar98k --- something over 300 FP's at 40 meters. And not bad out to 100 either...
Berlichtingen
Another unit to consider are the Fusilier SMG squads. I don't have CM up and running right now, but I seem to remember that thier close range firepower is slightly better than the Gebirgsj?gers
Fionn
From the perspective of "firepower over the range of likely engagement distances" Gebirgsjaeger reign supreme. They also lose less of their firepower when 1 or 2 guys go down than a Fusilier SMG sqsuad. Still, it still ALL comes down to the ability of the player. I've whipped Elite British Paras with Conscript Sicherung squads ( one of the Arnhem scenarios.,.. I simply hugged the reverse slope, bunched my men up and massacred a couple of platoons of red berets before falling back across the bridge. Berlichtingen
Fionn, He asked about defending in fog at night... which puts the maximum engagement range under 40m.

They've killed more of my men than I have.......and that's an accomplishment.
guachi
Fionn, if you are referring to the Arnhem scenario 'Ham n' Jam' the Brits are regular. Jason
Ronf
I vote for the Security Squads. Killed about five (slightly understrenght) Am Rifle squads in woods and tall pines with only one squad of them (not fanatic). ------------------ Ron No pain, no game!
