womble
It's not going to be possible to mod. The files for icons are a common resource. BFC have, in the past, asserted that having a wider variety of icon graphics would be a huge resource hog, and that the handling of the floating icons is one of the difficult things they had to get right, and is also a high processor use operation. I have to ask, though: why would having platoons be different colours would be "so much" help? I get that being able to see where all the platoons of a company are, at a glance, might be nice sometimes, but then you'd have to have double-clicked the Company HQ (selecting, not just highlighting, the whole Coy), you'd need 5 or more colours (HQ element, usually 4 platoons), and you're running the risk of accidentally giving the whole mob an order, just so you can have a bit more situational awareness in the rare occasion that you're concerned that the Company's platoons are all mixed up... Most of the time, just selecting the HQs (and hence highlighting the platoon's elements) will tell you where a given platoon's straggler elements are, and that's the important thing. Note that having it active above the Company level would result in a useless rainbow spectrum of colours being required for the 20 or so "orgunits" of a given Bttn. It's a lot of work (the whole icon assignment algorithm, which is one of the most computationally intensive and complex elements of the graphical presentation, would need redoing), and a greater processor drag for a very rare occurrence of actual utility. A more useful addition would be markers for the elements of different squads when they're split so that controlling the recombination of split squads wasn't such a ballache.
