Rts?

Recommended Posts

As an old war boardgamer, and maybe because some prejudice of mine, (perhaps with no reason at all) I always involuntarily felt it would not be the way to play CM as an RTS... Put as an expression:

"- CM? the best and most hardcore tactical war game ever concived played RTS? You are kidding don´t you? Leave that to, I don´t know... CoH (Company of heroes), MoW (Men of War)..."

No offense for those games, they may be good, is just they are not as deep and realistic as CM...

But last night I gave it a try, and it was fun. Mostly by not having to wait to give 50+ orders to see the outcome (using pausing a lot, of course).

So, the question is, do you play/enjoy CM mostly RTS/Turn Based? A concise why would be nice too...

Thx

Edit: btw is not my first post, I forgot my previous password and re-registered.

I play real time since it came out in CMSF. Sometimes I do miss the chance to review what happened, and indeed real time sucks in very large scenarios, because you miss a lot of action. But I really enjoy a stream game without looking at the blue barrel filling. Also, I prefer the non-stop action that only real time can give.

Yes, plus to be able to react as things happen... eventhough I´m totally new to RTS

I like to RTS until there is contact, then when there is contact I plot intricate turns similar to WEGO.

The reason is that I find WEGO advance to contact very tedious. Because, really, you have to plot quite carefully to prevent unforseen disaster. You can make a broader brush stroke company advance under RTS then as soon as there is contact you pause it and move more carefully.

The ideal, for me, would be to be able to toggle the game out to WEGO when desired, which would remove the temptation to be overly reactive.

Very interesting, will try that out. Thank you.

I think both have their place.

Wego has made H2H possible really, without it, it would be hard to play this game as it should be played.

But when I sit down and just want to play something quick vs the AI. It is the only way to go. Plus if you do not pause much. It gives a little bit of help to the AI, the AI is handicapped as is and not challenging enough. So not allowing yourself to micro manage your troops and focus on every little aspect of the battle helps the challenge and makes the AI a little harder to play against.

I play WEGO and also find advance to Contact very tediuous but I almost always just fast forward through the first few turns until I start noticing contact icons on the map. The method is quicker than playing in real time.

@OP,

I only play real time if I know the force size is less than a company. Once there are too many units then it becomes tedious to have to keep pausing in order to give orders. It really starts to break the flow of real time; in other words, it's no longer real time, it's more like: pause - go - pause - go - pause - go. Plus you have to zoom/pan all over the map quickly to babysit units. I prefer to take my time - after all I'm only 1 guy controlling dozens of units.

Also, I place extreme value at being able to review how the last 60 seconds has played out. You can't really pay attention to the battlefield in real time. Often in real time you'll be focusing on one end of the map only to find out a minute later that your units on the other side of the map are being slaughtered. Another thing I hate is when a highly valuable asset like a tank is suddenly KO'd but I didn't see it happen because I was focused somewhere else - in reality other units would have the chance to see where the killing blow came from and relay the threat to higher command. But if you play real time in CM and miss the killing blow then you're missing a vital piece of information that will affect the next few minutes.

I understand your point, and that it is something impossible to work out while in RTS mode. It will happen, as there is no way to be everywere at all times. Anyway, with a correct control of the situation (I mean proper use of pausing) you can react immediately against events that otherwise (using turns) would have made you to wait 30, 40 secs or more to react accordingly.

But that could be the only adventage of RTS, and also cause extreme micromanaging which could eventually bog down the game...

WEGO. My background of playing board wargames (Tobruk, Ambush, Open Fire, etc), 1/72 scale miniature WWII wargaming and then Steel Panthers WaW, it's the only way I like to play out any battles of interest I may have.

Yes I have tried real time in CM, I don't like it. I don't need to represent "real time" for my enjoyment of Combat Mission. For that itch I like FPS, Simulators or the Total War series of games.

Combat Mission was, is and forever will be in my books WEGO!! :D
