H2H - It is GREAT!

Recommended Posts

H2H took me a little bit to get this old head around it. But with help of Martin, his wonderful FAQ and related links, and General Ernie Sands...both very patient men...I figured out how to install, and configure it. Even playing just one game with H2H is a convenience. Once you and your opponent share a link...no more EMAILING. H2H maintains the files, with one click to open H2H you quickly see all of your games and which ones are your turn to move or waiting for your opponent...just go to the Saved Game menu and there it is...no saving files and then dragging emails to sent and returned email folders...for each opponent. And the program even tidies up your game files in their folder. Pretty cool. I also understand that because it is tied to Drop Box with a free generous file size limit, you can play the larger scenarios with their larger files with ease and no hassle from your IP rejecting huge files or large zips to you opponent. I also was surprised to see the other two opponents files show up and I don't even know if they use H2H. The program is a by God wizard and checks your CM folders for game files. Not a bad deal for free and I like it so much and so appreciated the willing support from Martin..that I opened the sock and donated:)

Look into it if you haven't done so...worth the time of this newbie to set it up which is not really much at all if you read the instructions carefully and ask questions if not shy to do so.

Probably goes without saying but I will say anyway, that playing solitaire v.s the A.I. is OK, but it is very different than playing against another person. The most graphic example I can remember proving that, was years ago playing a TalonSoft Civil War battle at Gettysburg (Before Tiller founded HPS). A guy just joined up in the ACW club and I fired up a game with him. We played a short scenario, 7 turns, First Contact (McPherson's Hill..I think), Buford v.s. Hills Cavalry at that early morning battle . I managed to handily flank him by sending a troop screened by the woods and caught him from behind with other units charging from the front (surrounded them) and they melted because they had no retreat. He was flabbergasted and emailed me how he had never ever seen that before done admitting until this very first game with me, he had never played the game against a real opponent. So I guess the A.I. had never outflanked him before! I felt so sorry for him that I told him to start the game all over again. He didn't let me surround him the second time but I won a major victory anyway...the point of this...another human being even as badly as I am playing CMBN (for now) is just not the same as playing a real opponent. Anyone out there who hasn't tried PBEM...you fellows are really missing out. I have never been sure why people don't like to play against another player, or even try it. Sure you get beat a lot in the beginning but then you improve. I think perhaps some fellows just like to play the games like chess, or are shy, or just like to win beating the A.I. But the irony is that in PBEM you can take your time to think. It isn't like playing in real time or in those game rooms playing something like The Red Baron when a Newbie gets flamed as soon as he comes through the swinging doors.

I apologize if this isn't the forum to comment in this way, but Doug really sparked a memory for me that I just had to share. I mean, this guy was livid. He boasted in some forum having years of experience playing TS Gettysburg...but he was so devastated that I couldn't take the win. And I NEVER EVER rub it in when an opponent loses. Good natured banter is one thing, but those blood-lust players rubbing your nose in some spectular maneuver just turn me off and I will not accept a game again from anyone whose ego needs to do that.

Right on Doug...

There's your answer. The Internet can be a hostile place full of anonymity-screened decent people who take that anonymity as a license to ignore all their socialisation.

However, the CM community is self-selecting, and I expect some of that selection process tends to weed out the people who are like that.

Womble is correct.

Hey Timmyc69, the best way to get reliable human Combat Mission opponents is to join a club. There are several out there. We Band of Brothers, http://www.webandofbrothers.de/ , is the one I am affiliated with.

If you ever want to join, let me know. The process seems a bit complex, but that is mainly to weed out the players who drop games when they start to lose.

Doug...I already belong...I still had a membership from years ago when I played the classics...not much of a record though.

My point wasn't so much about the toxic types as a problem for me but that I think some people are discouraged from PBEM after they have that experience. I have several opponents and once I am more confident with the game I will seek new opponents on WEBOB. I just told my anecdote about that Talonsoft game to reinforce your sentiment that PBEM is the ONLY way to play:)

Well, to be honest, I do play against the AI fairly often, mostly because the AI is always available and ready for a game. PBEM is where the rubber meets the road, however.

Feel free to contact me on the WeBoB forums (Captain Awesome there) whenever you want a PBEM game, and I will be honored to play you.

This is interesting because CMBN is the only game I play against the pooter. Multiplayer is the only way for me to get a buzz out of FPSs and combat flightsims, yet I am wary of taking on a real person in CM. I guess that there is a degree of anonymity when you join a server of 50 people, but H2H is pretty up close and personal when you're worried about your level of competency.

On other forums I'm exhorting people to try MP, yet here I'm one of the ones who needs convincing

Screw worrying about your competency :D, find someone who just wants to have fun. If they are better than you then they can help you accelerate your learning experience. If worse, you can help them with theirs. The primary issue with the AI is it is simply not reactive enough. Depending on the scenario it can be a challenge, but if you want something that you can try and trick about your main point of attack or lure into an ambush, HTH is the only way to go. As far as the AI is concerned, you aren't really there. :P

+1 to that. I learned more getting my ass handed to me in a couple of games against a guy I still play with regularly (but now I win some of the time) than I did playing against the AI. Try http://www.theblitz.org/ladders/Combat-Mission-x2/action=ladder&lid=16&active=0&played=5&order=d&order_by=elo&all=1 You can sort the ladder by ELO (which is a performance based ranking - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system). Once you have played a few games you can start to see who is a good match to you. I personally try to play higher ranked players for a challenge as often as I can.
