SNAFU
Is it just me or do 30 cal MGs have trouble knocking anything/anyone down? My thought is that they are much better for supression than they are for doing actual damage (which is still quite helpful). I've had many battles where an MG fired well over 1000 rounds but still came up with big, fat zero...
womble
Suppression is the doctrinal task of the MG, really. Certainly on the attack, my MGs tend to end up with Bagels because they're mostly firing speculatively at cover. In defense it's a different matter though, because the enemy has to expose themselves to advance and then the MG has a chance to "secure combat victories".
nik mond
Hmmm, this may be one of those coincidental misperceptions. Airborne recon platoons have alot of 30 cal teams. I had one such 30 call team sneak into position and take a 50mm pak head on at 200m. The short of it is, the gun was suppressed, and any crew that stuck its head above the gun shield was nailed in the long bursts. The last 2 crew abandoned gun and cowered. They have their moments, they aren't lazers like the mg42 but I think they are modelled OK.
