JonS
The universe is probably littered with the one-planet graves of cultures which made the sensible economic decision that there's no good reason to go into space - each one discovered, studied, and remembered by those who made the irrational decision. Michael Emrys
I'll always remember a photograph of him sitting in the cockpit of the X-15 after he had just set the speed record for airplanes. That was just about the happiest smile I've ever seen on a human being. Michael

Kanonier Reichmann
I have heard that many well educated Chinese citizens have been indoctrinated via the state education system to fervently believe that there has never been any moon landings and that all the Apollo 11 to 17 missions were a fake a la the '70's film Capricorn One. i.e. all done in a Hollywood studio to fool the world. Apparently it's too much for the Chinese citizenry to take that the capitalist imperialists had the knowhow and determination to reach the moon some 40 years before their own space program could get off the ground. JonS
The Chinese? *pfft* One in five Americans believe the moon landings were faked.
Michael Emrys
One in five Americans believe the moon landings were faked. And we've had to remove them all in order to keep the word from getting out. Michael
dpabrams
One in five Americans believe the moon landings were faked. Public schools will take a toll. History lessons rank behind bully proofing, condoms 101, soccer and the reading of Tommy Has Two Mommies.

Sometimes your up and sometimes your down in the world : ) But all in all I think China has done better in the last 40 years than the US so in another 40 perhaps they will be the leaders in space. One thing the Chinese are good at is taking the long view of history.

Kanonier Reichmann
And seeing as how they invented the rocket in the first place.... In that case... the extremely long term view! Regards KR
Bigduke6
Well, considering the Chinese have been around and taking the long view for quite a while, wouldn't that mean they should have already established themselves as the leader of the world about a 1,000 years ago? It was those same long view Chinese that came up with the Great Leap Forward and the Gang of Four. A couple of generations from now we may be laughing at them for trying to keep the fiction of a Communist state dedicated to the public well being going, when even the Cubans and the Vietnamese never mind the Russians punted that idea as not just useless, but detrimental to society.
gunnergoz
Personally, I think Chinese history reveals that they will only invest in those projects which have a clear chance of bringing them a decent return on investment in the near term. They may think in long term ways, but their motivation today is clearly what benefits today's and tomorrow's bottom line...not that 50 years from now.
