Chops
The frozen lake/marsh scenario does seem like the most plausible explanation. Do you think the hit it took was enough to injure the crew or disable the vehicle? Does the StuG correlate to a StuG model in CM:BN?
RockinHarry
I'd like to know how they find these things under all that earth. Likely with a large frame magnetic field detector. These devices detect large iron metal masses several meters deep and the russian team probably knew what they were looking for when walking on that frozen swamp. Once they pinpointed it, they came back in summer and recovered the Stug. Might be it was a simple accident, when the Stug got lost there. A simple underestimation of ice thickness might do it. Probably winter of 1943/44.

To me it looks just like a partial penetration, but who knows...

Sarge
that the tracks still move.. it would have to be in neutral right? was it so at the time of its demise? or do you think someone climbed in and shifted it? can you imagine what THAT must have been like? not knowing if it was 'empty' terrific find ~
ridethe415
I think they had to put it in neutral. IIRC the tracks weren't moving when it first came out of the ground. Wouldn't want to have been the first guy inside...who knows what was living in there.
Sarge
.. i was thinking more about what might NOT be "living" (anymore) in there
