Sask. man killed defending Ukrainian city from Russian forces, family says

    Quote

Farmer Joseph Hildebrand, 33, served 2 tours in Afghanistan before volunteering on front lines in Ukraine

    Quote

Jake said he was told his brother was one of a dozen soldiers — some Ukrainian, some from South America and elsewhere — who went on a mission near the besieged eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region.

    Quote

It's unclear how Joseph Hildebrand died, but Jake was told nine of the 12 men on the mission were killed.

  2. In my opinion, this is the kind of policy you get when you have a greater concern about Russia losing than you do about Russia being stopped, deterred,  neutralized, and punished.

If Ukraine had been given more support earlier on, the chances of hitting a long-protracted stalemate, slowing down the world economy, would be much less than they are now.

I want to assume that this pressure on Ukraine to show a willingness to negotiate is not being applied by its more spirited allies in the Baltic states, Poland, and the UK.  But I would be interested in finding out.

I'm sure China is watching what develops from here on out with interest w.r.t. Taiwan.

  3. Reuters has a summary of a Washington Post article:

U.S. privately asks Ukraine to show Russia it's open to talks -Washington Post

    Quote

WASHINGTON, Nov 5 (Reuters) - The Biden administration is privately encouraging Ukraine’s leaders to signal an openness to negotiate with Russia and drop their public refusal to engage in peace talks unless President Vladimir Putin is removed from power, the Washington Post reported on Saturday.

The paper quoted unnamed people familiar with the discussions as saying that the request by American officials was not aimed at pushing Ukraine to the negotiating table, but a calculated attempt to ensure Kyiv maintains the support of other nations facing constituencies wary of fueling a war for many years to come.

Grr on lack of Western tanks but any tank is better than no tanks and these will start appearing in December so very good. Also notable the entrance and publicity of a financial partner (the Dutch) alongside the U.S in funding the refitting of the tanks in 3rd NATO country, another mark for NATO staying united helping Ukraine and opposing Russia.

I wonder, if somebody would foot the bill to buy some older western tanks from smaller countries that might be willing to sell them, would they be of any use to Ukraine?

    M48, M60, Challenger 1, Leopard 1, AMX-30, etc.

If they got a few of them maybe it would open the door to other western tanks that up until now seem to be taboo to supply to Ukraine?

  5. What do you think of this?

Biden lost temper with Zelenskyy in June phone call when Ukrainian leader asked for more aid

Biden had barely finished telling Zelenskyy he’d just greenlighted another $1 billion in military assistance when the Ukrainian president started listing all the additional help he needed.

  6. I see some of the Russian military bloggers are taking shots at Turkey today for supporting the "Grey Wolves" group which they say they are claiming is fighting in support of Azerbaijan against Armenia as well as supporting Ukraine against Russia in a broad strategy to reassert Turkish influence.

Is this just because of Turkey's recent stance on the grain shipments?

Has anyone been following this issue more closely over time who can provide some broader context?

Info about the alleged blockade running attempt seems to be coming from Bloomberg, so hopefully there's more to it than claims by this UA Twitter. Unfortunately, I didn't manage to get through the paywall :(

Turkey says ships already underway will be continue to be inspected but no new ships will leave Ukrainian ports:

    3. Russian personnel working in the Joint Coordination Center in Istanbul are still in the Center. During this period, there will be no ship exits from Ukraine. It is planned to continue the inspection of grain-laden ships waiting in front of Istanbul today and tomorrow.

  8. When I have Google translate some of the Russian websites where people are encouraging their soldiers success against the enemy (Ukraine), I will see phrases like: "Work Boys, Work!" perhaps as if they are saying, "Good Hunting!" to someone in English.

Can one of our Russian speakers provide some insight on what this phrase more precisely means in this context?

Is fighting a battle akin to a arduous labor task for which one must put out maximum and sustained effort?

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon is sending Ukraine a new $275 million package of weapons and other aid, in a move to bolster the effort to drive Russian forces out of key areas in the south as the winter closes in, U.S. officials said Thursday.

Officials said there are no major new weapons in the U.S. package, which is expected to be announced on Friday. Instead, the U.S. aid is largely aimed at restocking thousands of rounds of ammunition for weapons systems already there, including for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, known as HIMARS, which Ukraine has been successfully using in its counteroffensive against Russia.

Amazing!  The Republicans learned from the Democrats by following their example of retracting an idiotic political statement designed to make hardcore minority happy and make the rest go "huh?  Are you serious?".  The world is a strange and mysterious place, but hey... I'm definitely going to take this as a good sign.

Not exactly.  McCarthy said his comments were misinterpreted way back on the 19th, just one day after he said them:

  12. The Seattle Times had an interesting article about a local that returned from fighting with the International Legion in Ukraine (paywall)

    https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/washington-vet-returns-from-harrowing-ukraine-front-line-duty/

An Iraq War combat engineer vet, he left because he was unhappy with how a incident was handled with a Ukrainian officer who he believes stole from their funds.  And, when digging trenches, they were able to easily dig out the dirt from some old, well-built German trenches from WWII.

  13. From the latest senior defense official background briefing:

    Quote

In the Kharkiv region, Ukrainian forces continue to consolidate their lines in support of their counteroffensive, with both sides trading artillery fire. We do assess that the Ukrainians have liberated some villages in the region and continue to make advances as they pressure toward the east. Russian forces in this area are largely focused on reinforcing their defensive lines.

Near Bakhmut fighting remains heavy and dynamic, with Russian forces attempting to take the city but being contested by Ukrainian forces. And in the Kherson region, Ukrainian forces continue to make deliberate and calibrated operations in support of their counteroffensive along three main axes. We assess that Russian forces are largely digging in to strengthen their defensive lines in this sector.

Accepting the 'refugees" actually prolongs the problem and doesn't help move it towards a resolution to fundamentally alter the Russian status quo

I consider this a plausible but entirely unproven theory.

One could equally argue that the exposure of the refugees to an open society and free media would forever intellectually alter the thinking of at least some of the refugees in a direction that will result in a more positive future for Russia.

Or you could argue that the removal of some of the most talented labor from the Russian economy will hasten a Russian economic collapse.
