  1. Taipei, Feb. 22 (CNA) Taiwan's reported plan to send a combined arms battalion to the United States for training in the second half of this year shows the two countries are significantly bolstering military exchanges, military experts said Wednesday.

A joint battalion composed mainly of soldiers from the Army's 333rd Mechanized Infantry Brigade and 542nd Armor Brigade is expected to head to the U.S. in the second half of this year for military exchanges, a source with knowledge of the matter told CNA.

And while the plant is currently building 15-20 armored vehicles per month — including tanks — it can easily boost that to 33 a month and could add another shift of workers and build even more if needed.

Nuclear War Simulator has been released

We’ve released Nuclear War Simulator. It’s safe to say this is our first-ever non-game. The developer, Ivan Stepanov, has created an in-depth simulation software that will be used in all sorts of professional places. It’s the epitome of what “games” can do to improve research and analysis in all industries, and we’re proudly presenting it to you with no strings attached. If you have a passing interest in the subject, I suggest you give it a try. Don’t expect missions, set scenarios, campaigns, or ultimate goals: just enjoy the unprecedented depth and research.

Exit at 500 km/h slow exit? Let's be honest with ourselves, modern military aviation has nothing to do with car racing like formula 1. World War II aviation had much more to do with racing due to the lack of accurate and long-range weapons. F / A - 18 is significantly inferior in speed to other modern fighters like the MiG-29 or Su-27, this does not at all make it vulnerable to these types of aircraft due to more advanced weapons, electronic warfare systems, radar, pilot ergonomics. In modern combat, the A-10C will not need to quickly exit close combat. After all, modern weapons allow him not even to engage in close combat

I'm all for giving Ukraine a batch of A-10s and seeing what they can do with them.

There's been already way too much of "Ukraine doesn't need this", "Ukraine wouldn't be able to use this", "Giving this to Ukraine would be a waste", and "If we gave this to Ukraine, it would just overwhelm them".

But there does seem some activity there:

Interesting RUSI article around some of the challenges of providing Tranche 1 Typhoons

Giving RAF Typhoons to Ukraine Would Be a Very Expensive Symbolic Gesture | Royal United Services Institute (rusi.org)

Long and short of it is that Typhoons are less suitable for lots of reasons and that the Gripen C is a much better fit.

Yeah, but isn't it nearly always the case that the UK has to offer Ukraine the western weapons it has available to it in order to  provide a demonstration/pathway/example that other western nations can follow in getting Ukraine more suitable weapons?

SpaceX curbed Ukraine's use of Starlink internet for drones -company president

    Quote

WASHINGTON, Feb 8 (Reuters) - SpaceX has taken steps to prevent Ukraine's military from using the company's Starlink satellite internet service for controlling drones in the region during the country's war with Russia, SpaceX's president said Wednesday.

SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service, which has provided Ukraine's military with broadband communications in its defense against Russia's military, was "never never meant to be weaponized," Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX's president and chief operating officer, said during a conference in Washington, D.C.

Zelensky is meeting Rishi Sunak in Londond today, and according to official webpage of UK Government, the PM will offer increased support for UA, including:

    https://www.gov.uk/government/news/pm-extends-ukraine-military-training-to-pilots-and-marines-as-president-zelenskyy-makes-first-visit-to-the-uk-since-russian-invasion

In case of UK, fighter pilots training means Eurofighters ( several, IIRC up to 50 Tranche1 are in storage in the UK and were recently approved for sale) or perhaps the Tornado GR4, assuming these are still in flyable condition and not scrapped.

I like these parts of that statement:

    Quote

The training will ensure pilots are able to fly sophisticated NATO-standard fighter jets in the future. As part of that long-term capability investment, the UK will work with Ukraine and international allies to coordinate collective support to meet Ukraine’s defensive needs.

    And:

    Quote

He will also offer to begin an immediate training programme for marines.

That training will be in addition to the recruit training programme already running in the UK, which has seen 10,000 Ukrainian troops brought to battle readiness in the last six months, and which will upskill a further 20,000 Ukrainian soldiers this year. The UK will continue to work with the Ukrainian Armed Forces and international community to scale the programme up in 2023.

    And then:

    Quote

The Prime Minister will also offer to provide Ukraine with longer range capabilities. This will disrupt Russia’s ability to continually target Ukraine’s civilian and critical national infrastructure and help relieve pressure on Ukraine’s frontlines.

  12. Confirmation of the Leopard 1's

    https://www.bmvg.de/de/presse/ausfuhrgenehmigung-leopard-1-a5-panzer-5579916

    Google translation:

    Quote

The Federal Government supports the Ukraine in the European network and in close coordination with international partners by supplying Leopard 1 A5 main battle tanks for legitimate self-defense against the Russian war of aggression, which violates international law.

The federal government had already announced the political approval of this delivery last week. This was followed by the necessary formal approval steps.

The Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK), as the formally responsible licensing authority, has issued export licenses to German armaments companies for up to 178 Leopard 1 A5 main battle tanks for the Ukraine. How many Leopard 1 A5 main battle tanks will actually be delivered to Ukraine depends on the repair work required.

The financing and repair of the tanks as well as the training of the Ukrainian armed forces is carried out in close coordination with the European partner countries of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Well the problem here is that they really were not "international".  We have no UNSC Resolution or anything else from international bodies (correct me if I am wrong).  So this is not "illegal aid", this is "trade between two nation states, one of which we really don't like and the other who is also on our sh#t list." We have a lot of Western sanctions but other nations such as China and India did not sign on.

I don't view it as an issue of international legality, it's about taking a side in  a state-power conflict and the repercussions of doing so.
