Very interesting discussion. I always thought the T-72 was the main Soviet tank but it seems I was wrong.

Between Two Fahrbahns is my favourite scenario, prolly because I'm a defensive player.

It's also a lot of fun on the attack, as long as you use Soviet norms to get the best use out of your troops.

You can substitute BMP or BTR company for the tank company. Last time I played it was with a BTR company with an attached T62 platoon and some battalion AT-4s.

One thing that I think is worth keeping in mind is that neither the US or China has the capability to deliver a knockout blow to the other. You can accomplish a lot from the air, but ultimately only ground forces can force one side or the other to give up. And neither the US or China can get at each other with their ground forces*, so long as North Korea stays out of the picture**. So an air/naval war between the US and China has the potential to last for as long as both sides are willing to stick it out.

As we've seen in the past, the war doesn't end just because both sides have exhausted their existing stocks and neither side has made plans for wartime production. You just get 1915.

    * And thank goodness for that. That really would result in casualties on the scale of a world war.

** It doesn't matter that their army is definitely worse than the Russian army in every way except manpower. The simple fact that they could create a theater for US and Chinese ground forces to get at each other means they have the potential to cause serious problems.

How long does the Chinese economy survive w/o being able to import oil and other raw materials by sea? How long does the Chinese economy survive w/o being able to export goods?

The USN might get into trouble contesting the sea of Japan and the south China sea. The USN can interdict all the naval cargo going to and coming from China.

The overland pipelines delivering gas & oil are sitting targets for precision strikes. Blowing up pipeline pumping stations is easy and the equipment takes a long time to replace.

Ah well then clearly this is nothing more than a bitter-drive by.  You are not really here to help, just resurrect old gripes.

As to "old tanker" if you could point that one out?  As you can see, I was heavily involved in both of those posts - dbsapps (may he rest in piece) pretty much tried a lot of weird stuff to try and prove "CM spotting is broken!" and really did not get anywhere with it.  A lot of run extensive tests (again) and found the spotting was pretty much in line with reasonable expectation for the equipment and era - not perfect but there you go.

The major difference between you and me is that I am one of three game leads for this title who actually has a chance to get things changed, if it is merited. And I am totally open to this, we have a list of fixes and outstanding tweaks.  However, it has to based on solid data, not anecdotal drive bys.  Why?  Well because the fastest way to get caught in a CM-Karen loop is to correct one way and then be yelled at by the next person that we are doing it wrong and to go the other way.  That is a fools errand and incredible waste of time.

I personally think that if BFC scrubbed the outliers from the game they would pull the life right out of the simulation.  War is outliers, a lot of weird stuff that everyone remembers.  They not only enhance the experience, they add to combat friction - war is chaos and a lot of the fun in playing is embracing that.

Back on topic.  VAB results are a solid representation of what we should be seeing.  A T72 did not have the same spotting abilities as an M60 - technical, ergonomic or even training and doctrine.  Given even ground an M60 should see a T72 first, they were designed to do this because the Soviets had a lot more T72s.

If you're playing the Sov and you put your tanks in a situation where they are getting into 1:1 duels with the Americans you're doing something wrong.

Bring a platoon or a company of tanks along instead. Or, even better, infiltrate infantry ATGM teams forward and kill them the way. The Sov has very competent infantry luggable ATGMs that will absolutely wreck pre-M1 armor.

Soviet WW2 is the worst even with a nominated mortar spotter. He too had no radio and kept him close to his Battalion HQ but still the same. Managed to wound one of his own 300 meters from the mission point.

I've had friendly fire hit my troops at 200m+ in the modern titles. The round(155mm) hit where I was aiming at but a splinter went out and got him nonetheless.

Made me respect danger distance more, particularly from the big guns.

The Chieftain pointed out. A T-62 with thermals is more effective than a T-72 without it.

Yep. Sometimes a little tech buys a lot of effect. The earlier Sov tanks retrofitted with laser range finders are damn scary in '79. They can get the range faster than you can with your M48s and M60A1s and their HEAT will take out the American tanks pretty reliably.

So over a large number of games I'd say that CM's spotting model works out okay. But on any individual game you're going to run into edge cases that are intensely frustrating and part of that is the game systems are fundamentally more than 15 years old at this point. So imagine that its not 2023 but instead 2011 and the whole thing seems much more impressive.

Anyway turning out your tanks and having C2 info sharing will help quite a bit to ameloriate some of the issues you are having.

Here's an example of the spotting game going the other way:

  7. From my notes on fighting like the Soviets:

    1) Time spent on recon is never wasted.

    2) Time and resources spent killing enemy recon is never wasted.

    3) Have a plan and execute it.

    4) The artillery fire plan dictates the maneuver plan. The maneuver plan dictates the fire plan. These must be mutually supportive.

    5) A company of Sov tanks spots better than any single German/American tank.

    6) Take away the better spotting offered by the NATO habit of fighting unbuttoned. Get them heads down to decrease their situational awareness.

    7) When you attack, attack! Don't poke him with one finger at a time. Make a fist and crush the enemy with overwhelming force.

    10) Use a platoon to crush a squad > use a company to crush a platoon >> use a battalion to crush a squad. Fair fights are for suckers.

    9) Keep pressing attacks until they aren't feasible anymore, but don't reinforce failure. The Germans/Americans never have enough troops/tanks.

    10) Just because you have mass doesn't mean the only way forwards is a frontal assault. There are other ways to win that don't involve sticking your dick into the meat grinder until it jams. Recon routes that bypass the enemy, the Germans/Americans never have enough troops/tanks to cover every avenue of approach. Infantry infiltration is a thing.

    11) Take you time, don't be in a rush to die. You'll probably run out of people, tanks, and/or ammo before you run out of time.

  8. I haven't tried this exact matchup but from what I remember the BMP3 was designed to take hits from 30mm auto cannon from the front. The BMP3 also has design features to mitigate penetrating hits, like the front location the fuel tank. Hapless did a video about the BMP3 on Youtube but I don't think this matchup was included.

OTOH, the BMP3 is still, hands down, the best VBIED in the game.

    +1,

I have a bunch of save file on my disk, all feature the BMP-3’s ammo cook off obliterate the infantry squad in the adjacent grid.

They are also dangerous to other AFVs nearby.

I remember there was a game I fired two Stugna-P in one turn, and that caused four BMP-3’s destruction. 😄

Ah yea, the good old chain cook off. Turns out stuffing a thinly armored vehicle with a **** load of explosives can have consequences.

I am still surprised/amused by Medvedev.  When he was temporarily keeping Putin's presidential seat warm I don't recall him being nutty in the least.  Granted there wasn't a lot going on at the time, but still my impression of him wasn't bad in that way.  I've had more reason to doubt the sanity of some Western leaders than Medvedev.  Now he has been turned loose as a rabid attack dog by Putin, because there's no way he could be like this without Putin's approval.

It's all about the the party (Putin Party) line. You must repeat what the Maximum Leader wants to hear and strive to outdo the others in the Inner Party to show your loyalty. If you don't you're liable to fall down some stairs or out of a window.

There are some downsides to running a government this way.
