No, the .50 cal mg was originally installed for that job as it was matched to the 120mm main gun... after getting strike on target the gunner would switch from the .50 and engage with the main armament, making manual corrections as normal. (Using HESH you could expect a 3 round engagement). Using Sabot I would normally get a first round hit due to the very flat trajectory.

The .50 was considered superfluous as we had the TLS (Tank Laser Sight) for ranging, and although we still had the .50 we never carried ammo for it anyway.

The 7.62 GPMG was our co-ax, used for soft targets and for killing enemy crew bailing out, and attacking infantry etc.

    Good facts trooper

I was with 4th Armd Bde Sig Sqn, Munster 84 - 88. We shared York Barracks with the Queens Royal Irish Hussars, they had the Challenger I at the time, i suppose they must have just become operational. I always remember standing in awe at them as they thundered around the camp perimeter, christ they could shift! Felt quite inadequate in our 432's with just an LMG for protection 😉

I was always interested in how the Infantry and Armour worked together. I did a 6 month 'stint' with the Grenadier Guards but that was NI so no armour involved. Anyway im waffling, wondered if you could throw some light on a few things?

What was the general strategy and tactics for you at your level? Was it purely defensive, deploying to preset positions or did you prepare for counter attacking? What about cooperation between you and the Infantry, how did you think that went?

Cheers trooper, its always really interesting hearing how things really happened rather than how they were supposed to.

You guys are determined to be tricky about this NBC thing aren't you?

Trust me, it is no fun and as it is Feb 24 in Australia, here is me (vehicle commander in the helmet) 30 years ago in Australian time, 29 years ago and one day in the time zones that most forumites are probably living in, wearing an NBC suit about 10 minutes before we launched across the Iraqi border ... because yes it was that long ago ...

    190413093_GranbyDay1.jpg.35c746d889d999cec2575b313c9ff46f.jpg

We spent three days in that kit and that is nothing compared to having the overboots, gloves and respirators on.  Want to see how much fun it is ....

Communicating .... put your COVID mask on.  Put a pair of gloves on and put a pair of washing up gloves on over the top.  Now try dialing a telephone number and speaking and being understood over that phone.

Writing ... as above but pick up a pen and paper and then try and write down what you can hear from your telephone call.

Using a keyboard ... as above.

Marking a map ... as above but also put on a diving mask.

Shooting accurately - COVID mask, diving goggles and two pairs of gloves - in your own time carry on.

Anything physical ... put on your normal clothes, then put another layer on, add COVID mask, diving goggles, both pairs of gloves and just try and do anything.

Or go for the full option - dare I call it 'Iron' with all of the above activities - COVID mask, diving mask, two pairs of gloves and twice the amount of clothes you'd normally wear.

Don't forget to check that your gloves, mask and goggles are on properly at all times and readjust them as necessary.

When you have done all of the above, you will see that there are more soft factors to be adjusted to simulate NBC than those being suggested.

So it might be 'cool' it might be reflective of the era and I do support the use of chemical weapons as an inclusion in the game as I know this would have been the most likely scenario in a tactical environment; however, it isn't going to happen as @Bil Hardenbergerhas pointed out.

    Hi all

Just my two pence worth. While i respect the decision not to include it, i do think it is a missed opportunity, that could maybe be included in a future module. All the points raised above go to show how detrimental to normal operations the threat of an NBC attack was. I was in BAOR from 1983 - 1988 and as i have mentioned in a previous post our whole MO was based around an NBC attack of some description, at least in the initial stages of any conflict.

To not have it included is to leave out a large proportion of what was trained for and expected, by all Cold War Armies at the time, and again as the post above shows, when conflict did occur, all be it in the Gulf in 1991, it was assumed that Chemical Warfare was still a very real threat against an opponent that had nowhere near the capabilities of the Soviets at the time, granted though they probably had more reason to use it due to the nature of the conflict.

Anyway as i opened, this is not a moan about it not being included but, more a way of pointing out, in my humble view, a missed chance.

    take care all

  3. Gives an idea of what the NBC procedures were like for UK Forces, i can't emphasise enough how much time was spent on Exercise in BAOR (83 - 88) in some kind of NBC readiness, and carrying out these drills on a regular basis night or day. It was common place for our CO to order a Gas drill at some ungodly time of the morning just as you pulled into laager following a route march or relocation.

Good info Wicky, takes me back a few years!! Out of interest i left the Army in 1988 and joined the Fire Service. Part of our duties every Saturday morning were to go into the cellar of the Fire Station which had been built in 1966 as a nuclear fallout shelter for the duty watch. We had to test a comms link, by which they would allegedly allocate us to fires, incidents etc after the initial attack. We were still doing this up until about 94 i believe. Funny how at the time it seemed so 'normal'

  5. Hi all, really looking forward to this module. I served in BAOR from 1983 - 1988, so a little after this initial release. From my time at least i would say one of the main concerns was NBC warfare, not so much Nuclear at this stage but definitely Biological and Gas. I would estimate we spent about 80% of the time whilst on Exercise in our NBC suits.

Nobody really knew what was going to happen, but initially there would of been a big fear of Chemical warfare, it would be good if this could be simulated somehow. i know at the time that any smoke, cloud, mist etc i saw and i would of had my mask on pronto.

Training in NBC gear was extremely tiring and cumbersome, especially in the Summer months so even if reduced visibility, higher exhaustion etc could be modelled.

I'm on the right in the picture below, taken about 85, with a typical bit of squaddie humour 😉. I see if i can find anything more relevant, i think i still have the old 'Survive To Fight' pamphlet in the loft.

    cheers all

  6. Not a photo but found this mate, not sure if its what you have already

you could try asking at http://ww2talk.com/index.php, i have found that site to be extremely helpful in the past. Also Google Maps street view can be quite helpful for getting a feel for the area, although there is a lot of new development you get a good idea of the lay of the land.

  7. Whilst I am very happy to see the announcement of Cold War and possible follow on modules, and with past reference to further modules and battle packs for CMFB and CMBS also to be released, I was wondering when BFC may see another major upgrade to the game engine to CM3?

Bearing in mind the sometimes painfully slow release schedule, does the announcement of Cold War tie in production to the present engine for another 5 or 6 years when it is already 11 years old?

If you moved scenario/campaigns into the correct folders you should have had a warning... something along the line of "Are you sure you want to overwrite these files?".

If you ignored the warning & clicked "overwrite" then you will indeed have to reinstall to get the originals back... however I think BFC added a "SF2" suffix to all their new scenarios so there won't be any overwriting issues with those.

I think you will need to be careful with the campaigns (After I uploaded this collection I ended up adding "SF1" suffixes to many of the original campaigns).

Yes i did overwrite them mate i think. Thanks for the reply, I'll see if I can reinstall over the top of my current game.

  9. Personally I would go with Il-2 1946 and more specifically VP Modpack, it's not as bloated as BAT, and if your comfortable with adding mods you can specialise your install to your taste.

My particular interest is the Nightfighter/Nightbomber war, and I have built up a very specific install covering this. I have even made some of my own mods for it in the past.

Whilst Il-2 Great Battles is far better visually, I find the AI fairly predictable and easy to beat.

VPmodpack is available at SAS also

  10. Many thanks 37mm really appreciated mate. I have one question, I installed all the scenarios/campaigns on page one, without reading your instructions first 😬. Does it overwrite any stock scenarios? If it does I didn't back up first, so how could I get the stock scenarios back without doing a full reinstall,  any ideas please?

    Cheers

  11. I don't think these sites are totally legal to be honest, there are a few around if you look. I'm not sure how they get thier steam keys, but I have heard that if steam find you have bought a key from one of these sites they can confiscate and close your account. So be careful would be my advice. Research it on the internet there is lots of info on these sites.

Although I agree with Holien (one of the likes is mine) and have been 'guilty' of similar posts including earlier in this thread, you do have a point that this is not a political forum.  I'll try to refrain in future.

No worries mate. I play CM and browse the forum as a way of escapism, as I'm sure a lot of us do. I'm just fed up to the back teeth of hearing how we are all doomed after Brexit, by those who never wanted it in the first place. If you really want something to fail it will. I just think we should get on with it now and learn to live with it. Moaning gets you nowhere,  ask my missus 😉
