  1. are you going to upload the 3rd part? it is great way to learn about game even if it is not most succesfull mission. i always try to use "smoke 'em if you got them" principle. put smoke everywhere you can and isolated enemy so you can deal with one torn at the time instead of having to fight all enemy positions at once. needs a lot of good timing though.

  2. i'm by no means an expert, but i think you could have done beter with this tank. whenever i find a tank that is unaware of my presence i try to pile up as much armor i can spare (taking care it doesn't impede me on other areas) to deal with it, just in case my first shot will miss and alert the crew.

what you did there was just alerting the nazis with first tank shooting and missing puting in danger the second one. from then on it was all luck, but you had an advantage since nazis were sideways. you should have put at least other tank to assist and destroy that bugger.

another thing... you should leave tanks in overwattch and let teh infantry advance then jump in with tanks to soften any resistance infantry can't destroy. now i'm back to video to see if your tanks got hurt by going on their own down thatroad by the river.

Yes, would be good to look at ambient sound - birdsong isn't right for CMBN either - there are definitely some birds on there that wouldn't be found in Normandy. What would be really cool would be modelling how bird song changes through the day too (two peaks at dawn-ish and dusk-ish), but I'm probably getting carried away. I did a sound recording of ambient sound in Normandy in June a few years ago if anyone is interested.

i'm all for realism but this is further then i would normally go :D

  4. just loaded up the second scenario in demo "December morning". as briefing states after 10 mins reinforcement comes in and i get three suads of pioneers in halftracks. however, they just don't use their gun. first i thought it is because i've dismounted the halftacks, but then i loaded one with platoon hq team and the bloody halftrack still wouldn't shoot. i've tried loading the whole squad back in halftrack but to no avail.

there is red line if i use manual target but nothing happens... halftracks come with driver and another gi but while i do understand the driver is occupied with his part of the job, i don't understand what is the other guy doing??? it just cost me the whole squad of 12 men... any ideas???

The Scenario is probably as historical as the snow on the ground.  Until 30th. of December there was no snow on the ground in the La Gleize area.

what i hav been able to find out (without actually reading teh "Duel in the mist") is the 23rd (when the scenario takes place) was merely artillery shelling La Gleize and that is about it. Division logs mention ¸rarely "L" company  but without any combat action. however there is mention of "Jordan" task force that operated on the day in area going from vaguely the same position as in scenario towards La gleize.

Historically, US army went for La Gleize and managed to reach it on 23rd but they have taken it the next day after 1st ss division already retreated manging to avoid us forces. so in that regard it is historical, however i wasn't able to find any specific mention of fighting in the area on the day. regarding weather, division reports cold and overcast weather with low to fair visibility. no mention of snow indeed. at least as far as i recollect.

thanks to hank and ltradave for clearing up the S1,2,3 seems to be spot on. now, what would be G1,2,3 ???

  6.  I adore historical engagements and, before playing them, i love to read everything i can find about them. The second mission in demo is "December morning" depicting the engament of L Company from 117th Iregts 3rd Bttn on 23rd December 1944 in the German pocket remaining west of Stavelot and in an attempt to clear ground for an attack on La Gleize where 1st SS Division Adolf Hitler is situated. Despite finding everything about an attack of this regiment on Stavelot which ended on 22nd, Including delightful german war maps of the area and exact period, I wasn't able to find anything about the mission in this scenario.

Pete Wenman who designed the scenarion says the mission is based on details taken from the book "Duel in the mist" volume 2, however  I don't have the money to buy the book and despite searching through teh 30th division AAR's I wasn't able to find absolutely anything regarding 117th Infantry regiment after 22nd of December. Does anyone know what I am missing and where to look?

    thanks a lot!!!

btw, to those more familiar with military lexic, what does  c-2 to S-3 means?

  7. since we are daydreaming...

how about a fictional scenaryo set in europe in 80s?

warszaw pact vs nato plus yugoslavia - AWESOME

base game set up in germany . first mission taking over west berlin and then advance on west germany

    first expansion war in scandinavia

    second expansion war in france

and my favorite third expansion that is prelude to all and is a proxy war in yugoslavia as warszaw pact attacks neutral yugoslavia to topple the regime after Tito's death. you'd have nato, warszaw and yugo forces everyone fighting against everyone weeehooo

  8. I'm wondering if the burning tank has anything to do with this. We as players see the smoke going straight up and not obscuring anything, but maybe the underlying game code treats the area immediately around the tank as being a bit smoked up?

    Just a guess.

indeed, i think even more likely is that (if that tank blew recently) the tank crew we are watching is still stressed and hiding somewere inside the shells instead of looking right ahead and spotting that tank :D

  9. until someone from BF take a look at this we will harldy know if it is a bug or somethign else.

however, what we certainly do know is that this doesn't happen regularly at all. it is very odd and certainly not representative for the game in whole. just go to editor and put two tanks in similar positions and you will see different result. what we miss here is the context of this particular situation.

anyway, no need to draatize, head over to bugs section and upload it so it gets sorted if indeed it is a bug. or only distracted green crew that just sucked three shells.

in meanwhile, it really isn't common at all to make you go away from the game completely.

  10. Just by the simple fact that the game was set with a very restricted time frame and plenty of map to have to cover. plus open ground. All these would indicate the attacker to select a mobile armored force.

Let alone the fact that the Germans have the heaver armor in general, so they have the upper hand just by going that direction in the game.

    So Bil planned accordingly.

oh, thanks for well thought explanation, that really nails it.

there should be some kind of combined arms approach as mandatory and timeframe shuold be ditched allthogether.

  11.

Bil was expecting a Heavy Armor assault, and baneman did not provide it. Too bad, because this was what the game required with the parameters selected.

i don't like qb's for all the reasons you have already mentioned. however i wonder what are the parameters would make this mostly armored battle as Bill suggests? Only parameter  i might imagine is them deciding it so, which should have really been done in my opinion. this way we get a strange battle that would never had happened.

would like to actually see some historic encounters in these AAR's.
