Hey dumbo good job! I played it last night as the Germans.. the Germans suprise was a good touch and it saved the battle for me, fairly tough fight and i love the map put together and the force balance was really good.. though i think the British may be a bit weak...
Only problem I noticed was the squad specific names in the briefing? I knew which squads you were talking about by location, but I think the squads you chose in making it had one set of names, then the game randomized them or something whenever someone else plays...?

Probably.. I've heard of people marching them through minefields to get rid of them. But then again whats the point? They're worth more points alive anyways (no pun intended) But if you wanna get rid of them you may be able to target them (never tried) or you can just do an area target.. or you could just get a single squad member, split a squad, or maybe some left over tank crew?

Mods can screw up a game I agree.. but they can also help a lot. Of course this doesn't seem to apply to CM since it is excellently made but if you had a game.. say Close Combat mods are the only thing to save it.. CC3 sucked but realred and westfront helped a lot..

E4Grunt reacted to John Kettler in Search Problem & Lost Posts
I looked through page after page of successively older posts in an effort to locate a reply I made recently to someone concerning
HE charges in antitank projectiles, as well as replies to iggi on Panzer Elite and another one I did on ammo for the U.S. 57mm AT gun. Got nowhere.

Tried high tech solution with search feature using both my last and first and last name. Would you believe it showed only four posts each time, not one of which was of the items being looked for?

This is most strange, and I'm starting to wonder whether I inadvertently entered the Twilight Zone or whether it's simply some glitch in the search program, needs posting updating, perhaps? Can anyone tell me why I don't see a fairly long list of posts under my name? Or does the search feature only bring up discrete entries rather than ones in which my name appears? Do I have to make an original post to be found by this thing? Please help.

    Thanks.

For some reason page 2 of this thread doesn't follow the standard format and overflows my screen, requiring the annoying use of the drag bar to read each individual line.

Is something wrong with the page format settings? Usually everything displays in such a way that I can read it without chasing text past my normal viewing field.

E4Grunt reacted to John Kettler in Jabo Jumpy Now, But Have Some Technical Questions
I just remembered the other item I wanted to mention. That is that the available film footage I've seen of bomb drops shows that most of debris goes up (not out) in a fairly acute cone, thus confirming the blast and frag masking I described in my initial post.

My apologies for the typo in the first post.

E4Grunt reacted to John Kettler in Jabo Jumpy Now, But Have Some Technical Questions
Having seen the horrific potential of Jabos in the recent CMHQ special, I have a few questions and comments.

    1. How does CM model blast and frag damage from an aerial bomb?

From what I can see, it looks like some sort of cookie cutter radiating outward uniformly from the explosion. As I recall from my military analyst days, though, a bomb delivered from low level (not vertical dive or medium/high level horizontal) doesn't arrive vertical to the ground and i tends not to go off until it's some distance into the ground (unless fuze extenders are used), thus masking much of the explosion and removing a considerable portion of the casing fragments from play as well.

These factors being the case, I would expect that the worst orientation vs. the bomb for a target to be in would be perpendicular to the bomb's longititudinal axis. This would put the target in both the densest part of the fragment pattern and on the primary blast axis as well. I would expect that the area in front of the bomb's nose would be relatively safe, while the area behind the bomb would probably not be a major frag hazard, caused by narrow shape discharging upwards, but would be from the standpoint of blast, considering the bomb's tail is almost certainly out of the ground at detonation.

Also, as I recall, blast falls off very rapidly as a function of distance (forget exact mathematical relationship), while shell and bomb fragments, some quite large, have been known to travel hundreds of yards and do all kinds of damage to men and materiel.

Taken in aggregate, the issues I've raised would appear to argue strongly against the bomb explosion pattern as depicted in the special scenario on CMHQ. I would further argue that crater evidence tends to support this view, in that even Army manuals show artillery craters as being oval, while mortar craters tend to be more circular, the result of a more vertical delivery angle. A bomb would be hitting at an even shallower angle than tube artillery does, thus accentuating this oval aspect in the crater.

1a. How detailed is the CM bomb blast/frag model when it comes to representing and properly distinguishing the effects of the factors I've described above?

    2. Though the article mentions 2.75" rockets, the ones which the British used with such devastating effect from their Typhoons were not 2.75s but 60 lb. rockets (warhead weight), something much nastier. Remember that a rocket doesn't have to undergo the 100,000 G load that a cannon shell does. Its HE fill percentage is therefore much higher than an equivalent weight artillery shell, so for a given warhead weight, the rocket puts much more HE on target than does the shell.

Which rocket is CM modeling, and what are its warhead details?

Seems like there's another question, but I'll post later if I think of it.

    Regards,

    John Kettler

There's a big difference in how I use Russian and US air assets.  Russian assets air much more vulnerable to being lost by losing your air controller - the only person who can call in air strikes.  Meanwhile almost all US HQ units can call in air support. Also US response times are much quicker so when playing US Im much more likely to hold back and use CAS as needed or on call, whilst as the Russians its almost ineviteable that Ill preplot a first turn strike with some if not all air assets, especially because almost all air assets can be called back for a round two on both sides.

Even more so for US players because they only have Stingers. Russ and Ukrainian forces can buy SAM or SAM/AAA vehicles that obviously have multiple shots. If you're parsing down an expensive US formation its easily enough done where the Stinger platoons flatbed humvees are deleted or Brads.  On the other hand he could have kept his TO&E intact, or bought dismounted.  But Im betting instead of buying a stinger formation seperate, or as part of an entire US battalion he parsed down the forces and kept the stinger crews or bought seperate stinger teams as individual special teams that mean they come with one missile.
And considering his last game with me was his first PBEM, and he didnt buy anti air and was surprised by the appearance of CAS he responded by buying 3-4 stinger teams.  So he obviously parsed down a formation somewhat or bought them (this is what I think) individual because IIRC no US Stinger formation only has 4 shooters.   Next when I first played many moons ago it was a rude shock to me when I realized both Igla and Stinger shooters got one missile with them, the rest required rearmament and from a formation assigned specific vehicle be it humvee, bmp, brad, etc. So my bets are on he's out of missiles. Add to that 2 planes made the attack run - but only one was shot at by 4 missiles at once and the other wasnt.   It was scared off by his wingman exploding in his face but he wasnt shot at. No, I think hes out and regardless fear of individual US soldiers with Stingers isnt keeping my SU25 out of the fight.  His comrades are roasting in T90s down there, pop some flares or something and stop being a pussy I dont know what to tell ya

chipotle does similar stuff. i quit moments before firing for a variety of reasons not least of which tellin new hires that at close we lined up in front of the chipotle sign and sieg heiled the chipotle name. one actually believed me and asked the manual labor does suck but im working about 60 hrs a week and i have fun with it. its also partially resignation that i wont be able to get other jobs due to poor decisions in my twenties especially very young twenties. what does suck is they dont pay you a living wage prices have gone up but in most states minimum wage hasnt. You should at least be able to gave a roof and food on 40 hrs a week but its not possible on minimum wage or even ten dollars an hr hence my two jobs.

E4Grunt reacted to Sublime in more... MORE!!!
I want more opponents. PBEM. Generally smaller to mediumish battles points wise. To clarify, I like larger maps, with reinforced companies or 2 companies and supporting armor. I dont care what side I play. I just want enough PBEM games going to keep me entertained I have a few going but not enough to keep me at the point where im entertained daily. Theres always a point I reach where I have enough games going that almost daily something will happen thats exciting, or I reach a point where I have enough players that if I take more I wont be able to keep up.

    Whichever happens first!
