  1. Whilst @waltero is pseudo-necroing this thread , I'll jump in.

Trying searching for 'tactical turn-based' style games when researching for PC options; this will quickly help you filter out all the RTS stuff.

I'm a devout fan of both the original XCOM and it's most recent iterations, as well as games like Jagged Alliance (but not the recent poor 'Flashback' remake). There have been a host of (mostly poor) spin offs as well.

One really fun one on my wifes ipad was Breach and Clear:

Silent Storm was excellent, with great tactical options and RPG elements for your team, until the stoopid well-overpowered robots completely nerfed your infantry.

  2. Thanks Vanir. I think  @Kinophile in another thread also just posted on this:

Yup, page 44 pof the BS manual - thick smoke from artillery missions will not block thermals.

Additionally further refining your comment, from the BS manual (I was looking incorrectly in the engine manual):

Line soldiers in recon platoons have higher amounts of thermal weapon sights and communications gear such as PDAs and manpack radios.

  3. To follow this up, as a noob question, are there any infantry units/equipment that could also see through such standard smoke? I recall vaguely from ARMA2 that there are some sniper rifles with thermal/IR scopes, but I assume these are a rarity item, and probably not even modeled in game?

Basically, my follow up question to @Kinophiles post is: artillery deployed smoke should be expected to defeat LOS for all infantry (including crew-served weapons), but not necessarily vehicles/aircraft/drones? Is this a blatant simplification, or roughly right?

Thanks for the clarification (as @Gnarly considers deplying a smoke screen to cover an infantry assault on a small village QB)!

  4. Many thanks for the detailed reply @Abbasid111, so many little things to learn! (I took a couple of 'organic' Comapny 120mm (?) heavy mortars with me onto a Tiny QB last night, and discovered their minimum firing distance is about 300m, which effectively negates their use on 99% of the map... DOH!)

    How's that video coming @Kinophile? :)

  5. G'day all,

I finally caved in and purchased BS a few days ago; trying to do a few rounds a night against AI in a Tiny QB whilst looking after our very very new bub...  :D (in order to keep the wifey sane and get her some sleep time).

I know there is a Translucent Trees mod for BN; does such a thing exist (or work?) for BS? Couldn't find it in the BS Repository.

    Tx

  6. Great counter-AAR Abbasid!

Your point 3 was definitely very effective; If I recall correctly, KP was still awaiting the appearance of the remainder of your armour/IFV's, and I think his supposition that you still had these in reserve was partially a catalyst for his ceasefire proposal.

    Couple of noob questions:

1/. I assume PGMS is precision rounds? These I assume therefore cost more to arm your artillery with during unit purchase?

    2 sections of 105s off-map. No PGMS

2/. What is the benefit/cost for on- versus off-map? I assume its again just a cost during unit purchase (on-map I assume would be cheaper, as it's vunerable to combat?) Or something else? Any difference in response times between off- and on-map options?

4 sections of 120mms, 2 of them on map, all with PGMs and the 2 on map sections have supply humvees for ammo, AT4s and small arms

3/. I assume APS is quite expensive to purchase (rarity)? Again forgive my noobness... Just considering you only had two of them, and in fact two armoured vehicles in total, you were not tempted to 'super' protect them?

    2 M1's with ERA

    Thanks!

  7. Looking forward to the implementation of your fast and bullish plan!

Though I just noted that none of your Abrams have APS, so I hope that preparatory arty supression barrage along the flanking treeline of your armour advance is thorough and effective!!

Note also: I have seen Sublime post elsewhere (in other AAR/DAR's) a dislike of opponents using the map edges for movement. I am a complete noob (only just bought BS) so don't know if your armour thrust qualifies for this or not, but just be warned!  :D
