  1. A good place to get started is to go to youtube, and search for

    "Combat Mission Armchair General"

There is a series of many videos that start from introducing basic concepts through most of the general situations you'll have to fight your way through in scenarios.

The tutorials in the manual will give you a good feel for getting started, and are good for someone brand new because they start with a limited number of units.

    Welcome and good luck.

  2. ***** Spoiler Alert ****

What I did was dedicate a small number of tanks to move off slightly to the left to get long range eyes on the German route to the objectives. There is a little bit of cover there (hull down on the embankment or is it a rail line I forget). And a few on the high ground they started on. The rest of the force hauled ass towards the objective.

I pretty much sacrificed those tanks that covered the movement but they got some rounds off and even hit something I think. It was enough of a distraction (even though they were all brewed up) that the main force was able to reach the occupy objective and get good cover and hull down locations along the rail line and in the trees. Then when the German force, tired of shooting my distraction forces, tried to move on the objective they found they were facing lots of guns at much closer ranges. I lost a few more tanks but I had enough in the right places that I won out.

Wow. This is almost EXACTLY what I did and I was massacred. All of the overwatch tanks were taken out and as soon as the "assault force" got to that small treeline at the right center they were also destroyed within 3 minutes, most without getting of a shot. They hauled ass to get to that spot quickly too. Maybe it just wasn't my day. :-)

  3. Well, as a Russian H2H loser, I've only played it once and from the Russian side. Now that I have that learning experience under my belt, I feel that I could do much better as the Russians a second time around. Of course that is partially because I'd know what's coming.

I *thought* I had a pretty good plan, but my armor was pretty much mowed down by long range fire from German armor. Almost every hit destroyed a tank -fireballs and smoke plumes everywhere. Not a pretty sight.

This was with my most frequent opponent and we seem to be pretty evenly matched in skill. Not sure what happened then if everyone says that the Russians *should* win.

  4. Assault on the potato sheds on the Russian right was going ok, until up pops a &*%$#*& King Tiger. I think I've hit it about 5 times from pretty close range and all it did was back up below the rise. (that after I lost about 5 T-34s trying to get closer). Grrrr! Still haven't got the flak wagon to die yet. Maybe I can knock down the building it's hiding behind.

I have to say this one is a fun challenge.

  5. Right now my opponents flak wagon (whatever it is - Flak on a truck?) is giving me fits and I haven't been able to get off a decent shot at it. But yes, the King Tiger is a beast. Still playing. Seem to be pretty heavy losses on both sides. (at least from what I can see of his). I'm Russian and I'm trying to advance on the hill on the German left. He holds the buildings there (or what is left of them at this point - do you still get the points if I knock them all down? :-) ).

Good battle. Very satisfying, so kudos to the designer.

  6. Go slow! You have time to find them, fix them, flank them and finish them...

    Bobo

This is good advice that is sometimes hard to follow psychologically. We want to get on with it :-) The time limits on scenarios generally are generous enough to approach, scout a bit, support with some artillery if available to suppress or smoke, and attack (assuming of course you are on the attack, but I guess going slow on defense isn't really a problem).

Take your time to ensure your troops/vehicles arrive at where you want them to assault from using the advantage of whatever cover, or folds in the ground are available. Not always easy in RT compared to BN, where the hedgerows block a lot of LOS. RT is more open, even where there are trees.

  7. Reviving this old thread- Has anyone played this scenario H2H? I can't quite tell if all the previous posts are talking about fighting the AI. And has anyone won as the Germans against a human opponent? And how did you do it?

I'm not going to say why I'm asking...

Playing it right now. Lots of tank carnage on both sides (I'm the Russian in this one). So far I really like it. I've made a couple of foolish moves that cost me, but I also was set up well to deliver a few costly blows of my own (at least as far as I can tell).

Good scenario. So far the best one I've played of RT (when I say best, I mean that I like it the best, not to offend any designers out there).

  8. I would learn with whatever you decide to play with.

WeGo and realtime have their own idiosyncrasies that subtly change how you give orders to your men.

I know when I give a platoon orders the resulting orders will be significantly different if I am playing WeGo or RT?

Also an armor pro-tip that I feel that is often overlooked. Treat a tank platoon like a squad of men. You wouldn't ever send one guy to secure a house. So why would you send one tank to do something? Your tank's survivability increases greatly when they have buddies around to provide support.

Real time can be fun in some of the nice small scenarios, where you can keep track of what's going on. Once they get bigger though, you spend most of your time panicking trying to stop disaster from striking here, no over there, no over THERE.

  9. Just got it, also got CMBN. CMBN is great, I actually prefer it over the eastern front :X. I guess hedgerows and bocage are my thing.

However, I'm having a hard time liking CMBO. The game seems really neat, but the camera is holding me back. I had the same problem in shock force. All I want in a game is a smooth WSAD or up,down, left, right camera movement.

Is there any mod to make this possible? Or any way to enable it?

I know this is the red thunder forum, but there's a total of ONE post in the CMBO forum.

There are three (I think) options for camera move controls. One of the others might suit you better. I only use the default so I can't comment on the others. Check the manual and the options screen for the other choices (I may be wrong about 2 others but there is more available than the default)

  10. Easy. You can post here and should get a few responses. Also check out

    The Few Good Men

    http://www.thefewgoodmen.com/

    The Blitz

    http://theblitz.org/

Both have forums where you can find opponents along with ladders and multi-player campaigns.

Also, for CM - the use of DropBox and CMH greatly eases PBEM play. Both are free. CMH is Combat Mission Helper and is available here:

    https://www.dropbox.com/sh/jvh9sx2zla2k0eq/S6LZaVAw_7

(I think this is the right place)

  11. Just a quick thank you to all who have made scenarios for RT. There are a bunch in the repository now. Just went on a download spree and looking forward to trying out some of them.

I know it takes lots of time and effort to make them. Just want you all to know your efforts are appreciated.

  12. Or failing that, PM me. I have room and time for another game and would be happy to take you on.

If you haven't used them I can help you get set up with Dropbox and CMH which makes PBEM a breeze.

I have all the CM modules and also all the SF modules so whatever you'd like to play, I'm up for.

Pace of the game doesn't matter to me. I'm happy enough going slow if thats what you need as I have several games going.

The Few Good Men is a good place to find opponents, as is The Blitz. There are probably others too but those are the ones I've used.

  13. Why is everyone not mentioning Canada? Granted, Canadians can be so...Canadian...but they do make jolly good fighters.

    Michael

I will agree with this. When I was in the 82 Abn we spent a month with the Cdn Para Regt. Wonderful hosts and top notch soldiers too.

  14. I have HOI3 - I haven't done much with it. At the time I got it I was too busy to put enough time into it.

I enjoy AGEOD - Civil War (don't have CW2 yet), and Napoleon's Campaigns. (need a -2 for that too!)

Command Ops - both Bulge and Market Garden are fun

Command: Modern Air / Naval I spend a lot of time with.

Flashpoint: Red Storm is good for modern - kind of a modern version of Command Ops. A bit hands off, but it is designed as a operational level - so once you give orders, units take over on their own. Like Command Ops it has a good and believable AI (I think).
