  1. Not really so much effort in setting up and well worth it. Much more fun to be had when planning your moves with a team mate.
  2. My first attempt at a CMBN scenario can be found here. It is a completely fictional 35 minute MG battle created with a tweaked version of one of the QB maps. Thanks to Poesel71 and Bigshout for their play testing and feedback and whoever made the map in the first place. Any constructive feedback is very welcome, enjoy!
  3. I got that when I installed the 2.0 patch without installing the 1.11 patch first. Fortunately you can just re-run 1.11 and then 2.01 to get your crews sitting back down again. Does anyone know if the guys standing up are actually more vulnerable in game or whether this is purely a cosmetic artifact?
  4. In fact my suggestion was not to remove the command but to change the default - a tweak to optimize the amount of clicks involved in playing the game. Deploy where you are, move elsewhere to deploy - there would be no problem at all in the situation you describe.
  5. No, that is not the case. Typically my orders would be for a turn or two. However it is very rare that I move a crew served weapon and don't give them a deploy order when they get to that final position. If you typically end movement orders for crew served weapons without ordering them to deploy, then yes, flipping the default would be more hassle for you as you would have more units to deselect deploy from than you currently select deploy for. As previously stated, for me this would result in fewer units that need to be tweaked at the end of their orders. I thought Augusto made a good point about the effects that automatic deployment would have on movement orders interrupted by incoming fire and I agree that it makes no sense to deploy unless the unit has got to the designated location.
  6. You may be right. I guess it depends on how the majority of folks make use of the deploy command as it is. Personally it is only rarely that I don't deploy weapons after units finishing moving. So switching the default would benefit me. But perhaps I am in the minority...
  7. With exactly the same toggle button that we have right now - I am just suggesting it is toggled 'on' by default rather than toggled 'off' after a move.
  8. I like the flexibility of the deploy command but would prefer that they deploy by default after completing their last movement order. If I don't want them to deploy then I give an explicit command for them not to.
  9. Charlie has done most of the fighting so far. Is it you or jby who he has locked horns with?
  10. Hello, I am commanding half of the US troops in this game. First off, a big thank you to poesel71 for sorting out the map and initiating the game in the first place. It is proving to be fun. I would second the view that the mechanics of playing in this way is actually pretty straightforward after things settle down in the first few turns. As to communicating, my teammate and I did discuss a rough plan of action ahead of deploying our troops and we do have conversations about how we are going to respond to the developing battle - though by no means every turn. In fact those conversations are the most enjoyable feature of this style of play and often happen over a pint or two of beer! I would say that not checking the orders that my team mate has given to his units, rather basing my expectations on our conversations, adds to the flavour of the game as you aren't sure exactly how far up the hill his guys will get and whether they will be covering your moves etc.
  11. Hi, I have a buddy who is willing to co-operate in a game with me, we'll play, but we won't be able to manage one turn a day or anything close. In fact I feel I need to give you two warnings: 1) We are both seasoned CMBB & CMAK players, but very new to CMx2. This will be my second PBEM game and his first. That doesn't bother us, but it may bother you! 2) We are busy people. I think we will be doing well if we sustain a rate of 2 turns per week. We are also in Europe by the way, but I don't think that will be a factor at the rate of play I anticipate. If you feel that opponents like us are not really what you are looking for, then I completely understand if you prefer to wait for someone who has played a bit more CMFI and/or has a bit more time to spare. However if you have no other takers for a 2 vs 2 game or are prepared to run a second game alongside then let's get to it.
  12. Thanks Erwin, So that suggests firing through bocage won't be a problem, but tripods inside houses or behind walls are unlikely to be effective locations for HMGs?
  13. I seem to recall reading in a post somewhere that when you deploy heavy weapons under certain circumstances e.g. behind a low wall they will never get line of sight over the wall but if left un-deployed they can be fired effectively from this kind of position. However I have been unable to relocate that thread. I have certainly experienced problems with LOS from .50's etc once or twice playing versus the AI but never really understood the intricacies of the problem. I am just about to start my first PBEM game with CMBN in a scenario filled with bocage and walls and I would hate for my M1917A1's to find themselves deployed in circumstances where they can take fire but not return the favour. Could one of you kind fellows please explain the dos and don'ts of setting up heavy weapons effectively from cover? Thanks in advance.
  14. Problem solved! Blame logmein. I was running the logmein client. This has an option to blank the client machine's monitor when a remote session is running. To do so required installing a driver. Whilst not a GPU this did appear in the display adapters list. It was obviously confusing the games as they sought the display adapter. Uninstalling it solved the problem. My apologies for the hassle, thank you all very much for your help, it was very much appreciated!
  15. Re-installing CMBB has made no difference...
  16. "That is a bit strange to happen all-of-a-sudden." I agree with you there! Thanks for the replies. DirectX says "a newer version is installed" when running the 9.0c update. Running as administrator makes no difference. Deleting prefs files makes no difference. No 'Optimus' technology in play, so I don't think that is it. It appears that CMBB and CMAK are just not detecting the graphics card, whereas all my other games are. I will try Streety's suggestion of uninstalling and reinstalling next...
  17. Hi, All of a sudden (!) CMBB and CMAK have stopped working on my Win7 Pro 64Bit, Nvidia GTX 485m laptop. I am getting the 'classic' "click to accept this graphics mode" messages for 640 x 480 resolutions at different refresh rates before the programs bomb out and give me the message "Could not initialize direct3D". I am running at a desktop resolution of 1920 x 1080 and all my other 3D games including CMBN run just fine. Deleting the prefs files (both in the program files folder and the virtual store) makes no difference. It has been a couple of weeks since I played CMBB & CMAK, which have run very happily on this machine until today, I suppose there have been some windows updates in the meantime - but I have not installed any major software and I imagine that if a windows update was to blame I would not be the first person reporting this. Rolling back/updating the video card driver has had no effect. All hardware diagnostics & Dxdiag suggest everything is working as it should and direct 3D is enabled. Can you advise as to what might be responsible/how I might be able to fix this? I still play multiple PBEM battles with these great games so I am very keen to get this sorted and return to the battlefield! Thanks in advance.
  18. Not too many units to deploy in the set-up phase (I am a time-poor player), with plenty of re-inforcements. Ideally mixed infantry/armour. H2H playable. Good example: Cats chasing dogs
  19. I am going to purchase a new laptop soon with the primary purpose of playing CMBN and CMx1 titles. From the benchmarks it looks like Crossfire ATI 5870M beat Nvidia 480M. Are there any known issues with either card and CMx1 or CMx2?
