Enemy at the Gate was my perhaps first military history book purchased as a tiny paperback during the summer around 1973. The author was interviewed on US Public TV which I began watching earlier for their coverage of Fischer Spassky. It was that interview, and the song "Roads to Moscow" released about the same time, that got me started on east front WWII.

PS So, funny as it may seem, "Enemy" was on my summer reading list 42 years ago!

Anyone read the Stalingrad Trilogy by Glantz and House? I am seeing the level of detail may just get in the way of a readable history. Tour de Force Glantz?

Modeling human behavior under fire has no simple solution. Who is to say what a green troop will do if taking fire from front and flank. Maybe they will just hide in place and not run away / rout at all. Poor quality troops should tend more for self preservation with less concern about their comrades and the mission. Even in a small unit like a platoon the response to fire will be individual. If the player retains control of their troops receiving fire they decide if a tactical withdrawal make sense. Once they lose control, the TAC AI has to model what is the best course of action - hide in place, run for the hills. Perhaps a "retreat" command that takes the unit off map using a faster or most concealed route? With AI plans, the map exit makes sense. A new waypoint would need be to be developed. How to score off map retreats should not be too hard.

If you mean back to CMSF I am not sure what the code will allow. I would think a QB system incorporating the many user suggestions might be readily implemented across existing titles.

Nice summary above from the CM Junkie. Also add that the systems related to QBs and AI plans are not off the radar. I don't see any whopping news this time around. BFC is plugging along and truly loves to surprise us all in the end.

Did Rosenberg lend some advice on how to keep open an otherwise important thread once the cow leaves the barn?

Filet Mignon is like 15 bucks a pound this summer. But I wonder what the going rate for one new BFC sanctioned scenario would be?
Given the effort required, they should be a real bargain.

"Nowhere did I say that. Which is why I didn't list specifics"
Reading between the lines .. Happy to see QBs and AI remain on the BF radar.

Thanks for the Update.
I guess the battle packs will contain (for better not worse) BFC sanctioned scenarios and campaigns and at a price ?$?
Also, it does not appear QB or AI plan improvements are in the future?

Thanks. Was there any comparisons made to the air war over Japan or how nuclear (the wait for) technology factored into the conduct
strategic bombing? I am not sure if the Manhattan project was widely known and influenced military decisions prior to August 45.

I guess its mostly the chat room to find opponents rather than the forum >> email <> email > fight battle via C
(I did not see the chat feature in the hamachi room)
Kevin

Maybe I have but not in the realm of wargaming. BTW I logged into the hamachi room and coundnt see how to proceed.

Thanks guys. Thanks for the PDF link. JasonC - how does Stahel's work compare with Thunder on the Dniper? I guess 3 volumes would men more research / detail. I have not read Thunder in a few years. But it seems the central thesis is the same regarding August 41 and AGC.

Hi .. I went to click the download and then stopped and asked "what is this network thing and how does it related to the BFC in game multiplayer?" I search and see it allows people (n=30?) to "network" and play "games". I wonder why this is the first I heard of it. It sounds interesting. I am not the paranoid type - did banking via a modem - but need more info before I d/l and check it out.

I am about to take a plunge into the books below. Any thoughts? What are you guys reading?
Anything new from the Soviet perspective?
Kevin
Hitler's Army: The Evolution and Structure of German Forces
Tank Warfare on the Eastern Front 1941-1942: Schwerpunkt
Where the Iron Crosses Grow: The Crimea 1941-44
Ghost Fleet (modern novel)

I see. Would the fate of the German mortars be any different than the fate on the Soviet's? Did the German mortar formations displace more readily when their positions were about to be overrun? I would imagine the displacement would have to have been pre-planned by and large.
Kevin

Thanks Jason. Seems they were pretty safe unless lines were torn apart frontally or a very large group of stragglers blundered into their positions from the rear. And it looks like stragglers would have been better off just avoiding any heroic ambushes.
Kevin
-
That was my initial thinking - that the Soviets would not equip the formations greatly given their offensive doctrine. But mortars became such a major component of their infantry tactics perhaps maybe they had a little more protection. I guess like all soldiers they would pick up anything that did not slow their movement down so a LMG per company may be reasonable.

Were these units able to defend themselves with anything other than their personal rifles and side arms?
I have read mortar companies deployed scouts to select firing positions and OPs. So I imagine they would
be available to ward off enemy infiltrations. Were any MGs assigned for local defense? Not sure if the answer lies in the official TOE. I am interested in the 82 mm formations mid to late war in particular.
Thanks ...

Good eyes. Thanks for the post Sonar. Looks like the Parpach line?

A bit more here
If memory serves me right it was also a squad leader battle at some point.

Welcome aboard. You will find the forum a great resource for CM and military history, weapons and tactics.

Yep that's it. I see reviews but like to trust the guys here. Wanted to see if anyone here has read it.
Thanks.

Anyone read this book? If so, any thoughts?

Artillery and marshes
in Combat Mission Red Thunder

Good question. I would imagine rounds would get dampened in thick marsh or mud. But not air/tree bursts. The answer at least in part may be in the forum somewhere.
