  1. This whole topic must be baffling to new players who know nothing of CMx1 - and I assume there's going to be a lot of people like that buying CM:BN. Tales of a legendary 'ideal' game played, it appears, by the Gods themselves in Vallhalla. Really, they should hunt down the old CMAK demo and give it a spin just for comparison purposes. It might help shed light on this otherwise perplexing discussion.

I should do that too. Although I played all the CMx1 games for years it seems I barely remember any of these vital features. God, I must have been really drunk.

  2. But it would also be nice to be able to use it for QBs (unless it's in there already too).

So splitting it out as a separate map would be nice, and also make it customizable if someone wanted to do that for some reason.

I guess you could always go in and simply delete all the units if it's just the map you wanted to use. I've done this in the past for my own entertainment. If you were wanting to use it for a QB against the AI I guess that would be different as you would obviously have to set up some plans for them.

  3. +50 to all the rave reviews of this map!

But can I again beg for this map to be posted separately on the repository, so that we would be able to open it in the editor and see how George MC worked his magic? It would be a tremendous help to budding CMBN mapmakers.

You can open it in the editor as it is. I was doing exactly that a little while ago because I wanted to have a look at how George worked the elevations in the map.

Actually, There might be a problem. When I opened it again just now it was all messed up in 3-D preview mode - everything was blocky and corrupted looking. Anyone else had this when opening a scenario in the editor?

Aside from this occasional weirdness the map's a beauty. George, how did you work the elevations? Are you using a topo map from somewhere or is it all you?

  4. How does that work then? You get charged £37.89 yet I and others in the same legal juristiction just get a happy postman shoving it into our hands with no fees to pay. London really is a dump.

Yeah, there is something not right there. That seem utterly excessive. I don't understand how they can legally charge you anything at all when most of the Brits who have received it haven't had to pay a single penny more.

I'm not one of those Brits. Still no sign of it here in Glasgow. I'm expecting an early morning journey to the depot to pick it up on Saturday, though, which will be fun with a hangover.

  5. I'm having a hard time getting in to CMBN vice CMx1 a different reason.

While playing CMx1 massive casualties were expected - 30, 40, even 50% as victor. My limited CMSF gaming (less than 20 AI games total - even as a pre-order on CMSF) made me think about every causality. With CMSF 5% causalities or less seemed like the norm.

Now with CMBN when a squad assaults across a field that takes 3 hits I'm freaking pissed off and morning the losses - ALT-Q. @#&%^#$. So far I have yet to readjust to the higher causality rates.

Yep, been there too. I'm beginning to loosen up, though, and get used to watching half a squad get wiped out by a MG42 I missed. The problem I'm now having is when I go back to one of my SF PBEM games, I'm being a darn sight more cavalier. BFC Fix or do sumfink!

I had completely and utterly forgotten about targeting lines in CMx1. And Command Delays. And a whole bunch of other things. I would love to have an image overlay function for the editor, though, and an improved method of seeing which squad has taken serious casualties and to whom would also be nice.

  6. Question....

I just spent 3 days making the SW Part of Carentan...

I used the exact dates of the 506th engagement and there after but cannot get German Fallschirmjager troops... Crap, are they not available in the first edition?

thanks for any assistance.. I have used almost every date.

No. They will be in the first module along with the Commonwealth forces and the SS.

  7. You didn't stumble, perchance, on a particular cabal of banned grousers did you? If the game was made of bacon they'd be complaining about it not being dry-cured applewood smoked bacon. There's nothing in the world that if you really wanted to complain about it that you couldn't find cause if you looked hard enough.

No. I know this thread as I was reading it myself yesterday. It's not that lot. It's on a PCO board, as Frederico points out. Still, I particularity liked the claim in that thread that BN is an arcade game.

  8. Please know that we will take turns missing you, Mister Chaser. I haven't read the whole manual yet but, when I do, I'll stop by this thread to refudiate these baseless claims.

CM Norm is the reason why the little mrs can hardly keep her hot little hands off of me. The demo alone has made me much more desirable and I am a tard from all of the mountings.

    :D

Post of the century. I might get it put on a t-shirt. :P

I love PBEM. Waiting for the turns to arrive gives me something to live for aside from whiskey and acrid tears.

  9. My biggest obstacle is gonna be getting used to letting guys die again. The 1:1 makes it hard enough but CMSF trained me to be very aware of my casualties, to the point where if I had four or five guys go down I was really cringing! LOL compare that to the wholesale slaughter in CMX1, most of which you never really witnessed...gonna take some brain retraining.

    Mord.

Yep, this has been the hardest thing to readjust to so far. I screwed up the timing and moved a squad over a footbridge in the tute scenario - it was horrible...such a massive difference from three figures jerking slightly like in CM1. My brain kept doing that Shock Force thing of reminding me that the embedded ITN correspondent was going to have the whole thing on the 6 o clock news.:D

  10. I can definitely confirm that there will be no release today. It would have been nice, agreed, and we have been shooting for a friday release for some time, but we want to take the extra days over the weekend to digest the demo first, and make sure everything is prepared just right for the release.

So what you're saying, basically, is you're waiting for me to go on holiday on Monday and leave the country and my internet connection behind? Oh well, I'll have to find something to do in Rome for a week instead. Oh, the Humanity! :D

  11. I went straight to the editor like I do with every game. I've been looking forward to seeing what the new weather settings look like. I love SF but am happy to have some variety after 'Hot and Daytime' and 'Hot and Nighttime'.

Well, It seems like if I choose 'downpour' or any of the settings with fog or mist I get this:

    cmnormandydemo201105122.jpg

I am using an ATI card ( 4780x2,)which I know is probably considered sinful by some major world religions, and I seem to remember there were problems with ATI cards and fog effects in the old games but has anyone else seem something similar? Anyone have any advice? My drivers are pretty recent - might actually be the newest ones. I can't recall.

I was really looking forward to the mist and rain. I like mist and rain. I'm not so bothered about the little soldiers as long as I can make them run about in manky weather.

  12. Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?

I should have cut and pasted that. My fingers hurt now. :(

  13. I have WITP:AE which is excellent, but I never really played it because of the micro-management required.

The funny thing about WiTP is that although there is a huge amount of micro-management involved a lot of it quickly becomes second nature, and the rest of it - like the really boring pilot training stuff - soon becomes relegated to semi-regular housekeeping turns.

I've been playing it quite heavily for about a year now and it still amazes me how a game at this sort of scale and depth can become fairly easy to follow and manage once you get some time with it under your belt.

  14. (Mandrake's WITPAE thread is particularly fun reading),

Cap Mandrake and Sprior's thread is the greatest thread in the history of wargames. Well, not that much wargaming actually happens in that thread...:D

You know, I see the same fanboi/hater behavior on nearly every board I visit now....the COD board over at SimHQ has become almost unreadable due to the incredible level of faction-eering from both sides. It's not just games, though (although the sim/ wargame community does seem especially bad,) it's everywhere online; I've been looking for decent information on phones recently and it's exactly the same.

It's got to the stage where, if I see someone using the terms fanboi or hater in anger, any otherwise decent point the poster may have been trying to make just vanishes in a magic puff of 'I No Longer Care.' It's just not funny anymore and it's becoming destructive. Doubly so when you remember the actual size of the wargame/sim scene.

I'm with Steve; I've been advocating a study into this madness for a while now. I'm sure someone cold win a Nobel prize for it.

  15. Just realised that when using the ASSAULT command in CMSF twice (ie two legs) the teams bunny hop i.e team one from home to leg 1 then stops and covers while team two gets to leg 1 , then team one jumps to leg two etc .... how cool is that :D .... tentative link to CMBN i know.

It's a very useful order. Just don't do it over too large a distance otherwise they'll want to sit down and have a tab and a brew. I certainly would.
