  1. I know for certain that fire at other members of a partially surrendered element can kill the individuals attempting to surrender, and I think I've seen area fire do for surrenderers too, since v2.

Yeah, I've seen this recently. I had the remains of an SS squad attempt to surrender to some GIs. The GIs gunned down one of the guys with his hands in the air - it was pretty brutal to see - but this was before the white flag appeared so it might well have been an attempt to suppress elements the AI regarded as still dangerous.

  2. I found this a hard battle. I got a total Victory, but it came at a cost. I whacked the farm with the full company at the beginning in order to neutralize it quickly, which I did with very light causalities (1 dead, 4 wounded IIRC,) but the move across the fields was much more fraught. Although I took out the mobile AA with a single, very lucky burst from a MG, the armoured car proved a much harder opponent until a bazooka finally did for him. My move into the village once the AC was killed was fairly bloody and I lost a lot of men, but once I had a foothold I slaughtered the defenders. They just crumbled at the end. It was a turkey shoot.

  3. That is probably because also the ammo of the neighboring unit is counted there as each mortar are able to use each others ammo. When they go separate ways they are not anymore able to use the other units ammo and therefore screen shows only half of the ammo. If you move them close to each other again then the ammo should "double" again.

That's probably it. Thanks. I had assumed something similar, only I thought it was possibly one of the other carriers carry extra rounds. Didn't occur to me that it might simply be reading the other team's load.

    @Yankeedog.

Good advice there, thanks. I've actually been trying to do that to little effect so far. My timing is probably off. Of course, every time I suppress one of the little darlings, another pops up and suppresses my suppressors. :D

I'll get there. Col. Frost might be on his own for a while mind you.

  4. Breakout from the Neerpelt Bridgehead.

    Hardest. Freaking. Battle. Ever.

    ****************SPOILERS*********************

I don't even know where to start.

I've got 37 minutes to go and I am held up at the Belgian-Dutch Border. Don't want to lead with my armor cuz there is something big lurking down the road (88's?)

Infantry gets picked off and suppressed.

Trying to clear out the left hand side of the road near the ALPHA line and making NO progress.

The route of advance is so narrow that it's really hard to maneuver and get fire power advantage.

Can't use arty or air power since I can't SEE anything.

And I'm supposed to get my men off in GOOD order? Ha! Don't see it happening.

Damn that Michael Cain for making it look SO EASY.

    </End rant>

    Yeah, tell me about it.

    SPOILERS

    ********************************************************************************************************************

Held up at the border with the clock ticking down. That damn 75mm dug in to the trees to the right of the ville has taken 16 rockets and countless rounds (bang on target) from my on board 81mm mortars.

And yet....every time I think the goose-stepping SOB is dead for good and I start moving armour into a position it can support infantry, up he pops and puts another round into a tank or armoured car.

If he survived all that and can still return fire, they ARE the bloody Master Race. :D

On a slightly separate note, I noticed an oddity - dunno whether it's a bug or not: During the set up phase, the two medium mortars assigned to A Coy are both carrying 60 rounds in total - 54 rounds of HE and 6 rounds of smoke. As soon as either the mortar teams or their transports are moved (either during set up, or by giving orders) This total drops to exactly half. Anyone else noticed this? I thought I had made a mistake so I just went and started the mission again to make sure.

Bug or WAD? Double to amount of HE would certainly make my like a bit easier.

  5. Base textures, and 3D mappings, as simple as that. Some vehicles are a joy to mod, like Churchills, Cromwells, Lloyd carriers, even Stuarts, summing up,...all pure british (not Lend Lease, not ported form CMBN v.1.0 and colorized ) vehicles are to my taste the best made textures along with some german vehicles (specially in CMFI), but ALL Sherman based textures (shermans, sextons, etc) are NOT nice to mod,...It happens with other vehicles too,..but I found that overall, german vehicles and pure CW vehicles are much enjoyable,...Shermans, even in CMFI they are still not enjoyable projects. SO I tackle them with lazyness,...still, they have so many decal options,...If I was to choose one vehicle for modding starters I would say,...pick up the Cromwell.

Well, you may not enjoy them as much as you enjoy doing others, but I'm glad you do them: Those two screen shots look fantastic.

  6. Yes you do, for 3.75 days in late-April. I remember this very clearly from my days at RGU. Happened every year at exam time.

A very brief window of opportunity to head down to the Hogshead/Old Schol House and watch the scantily clad ladies as they make their way down Belmont Street.

Good memories of pouring out of Drummonds (I think that's what it was called,) on the corner of Belmont and Union street on many sunny May afternoons. Almost made up for those long, long months when you couldn't tell where the granite buildings ended and the grey, grey skies began.

Here in Glasgow we've had two or three beautiful winter days. Cold, crisp, sunny with blue skies. Perfect. It's supposed to pour with rain tomorrow so, Battlefront, tonight would be an ace time to release this puppy!

  7. I was going to Pre_order but saw the $20 postage to UK and then remembered the joy of customs, so after seeing the response above I will just have to go down the download route... Good to know it will be with us soon.

Yeah, I won't be making that mistake again. Download only for me this time.

EDIT: Just saw the post above. Ah well, I'll still just get the DL alone this time.

  8. Some of the "Band of Brothers" troopers have published their memoirs including Dick Winters. I've only read "Parachute Infantry" by David Webster which is an interesting contrast to Burgett's style.

'Parachute Infantry' is a very good book and an interesting counter point to the other Easy Company memoirs currently available. He certainly comes at the subject from a slightly less - I don't know what the word is - nostalgic angle. but then, he wrote it not long after the war. It's interesting to read about what he thinks of a number of the other company members. He certainly didn't like Peacock very much.

I think Ambrose drew on it quite heavily for his own book.

  9. CMSF is the best simulation of combat that BFC has ever done. It's by no means as pretty as CMBN and for some of you, the theater and era of combat isnt what you are into, but if you missed it, well I feel sorry that you did. The sheer number of weapons systems is staggering and getting them all basically right and balanced within the game was truly a work of art. I dont think BFC will ever do a module as good as NATO was either. Just my opinion (but I am right) :)

    +1.

I love BN. I think it's a brilliant game and I will be playing it for years. But I still prefer SF. I think it's an outstanding title that never got the love or respect that it deserved from a lot of people for a whole bunch of reasons - some good, some not. I'm still playing it heavily in PBEM while I have yet to get involved in a BN match up. All three of the modules were superb and the scenario making got better and better with each release.

You know why else I like it? There is nothing else out there remotely like it. Nothing. No other game I have scratches that itch I have for modern combat. When It was first announced I, like a lot of people thought, 'well, where's the fun going to be in that?' Boy - was I wrong.

  10. Aris: I noticed in my games that while the plain M4's have your wonderful graphics the M4A1 and A3 versions still appear to be the CMBN originals.

Are those variants still to come, or why would the mods not show up for those versions?

I believe it is just the basic M4 variants that he has modded so far. I think he said that he has actually uploaded the M4A3 pack to the repositary so I guess they will be available on monday.

  11. Actually just gave it a try on my freshly installed Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit and it did work. Though as mentioned, the first try is a image of the main menu, but it did work on the second attempt. Before on my Vista 32-bit install it never worked, was always just a black screen.

P.S. Got the GTX 570 on the 280.26 drivers.

Cool. I wonder if something got changed in a Windows update. I'll give it a spin myself tomorrow.

  12. Its been a long time since this was brought up, I'm trying to recall. I think (I may be misremembering) that there may have even been a 3-D Snatch vehicle model all built but there was simply no place to shoe-horn it into the TO&E. Rather like American Nyla and MRAP APCs. An 'occupation' tactical sim would tend to look quite different than the current 'invasion' tactical sim. There was considerable internal debate about steering the game towards resembling an Iraq-style occupation force. I think you can guess who lost that debate. :)

I do actually remember a mention of the model being done, but that is from a long time ago. I think a few things went bye bye over the years. Does anyone remember that screenshot of a US on-board mortar team? That must have been 2005 or 2006 it appeared and promptly vanished.
