  1. I had another question on this, so let me clarify things:

The briefings are intended to be vague, as an actual military briefing might be in an uncertain situation; they are not intended to be explicit instructions for a game. Reading them carefully and inferring meaning is part of the exercise.

I will not, in the interests of fairness, elaborate on the briefings. You should consider your mission objectives and infer what type of objectives would be most appropriate; I have selected objective types in-game based directly upon the missions assigned.

    Cool, fair enough!

  2. By the way, not sure if this has been discussed already. The new versions of the application do not tell me how long ago the turn was copied to dropbox by my oponents no? Whenever I open H2H the time i see for all my opponents new turns copied is always 0 hours... If I open H2H later then the time is counted from the time I opened the application to find the file for the first time. Not sure if this is clear :D .

  3. Dropbox and similar tools make so easy to play the game turn-based and so efficient that it can be played "almost" at the same speed as the old TCP-IP I reckon. You still have to wait for your opponent´s turn but hey, not that long.

If in addition to dropbox etc you also use this little application to manage the turns that warns you when new ones are in etc then it can be done seemlessly:

Chat these days should not be an issue... msn, skype, teamspeak, ventrilo, you name it.

Arrange a game with a friend like you used to do for TCP-IP, share the Dropbox folder and away you go!

  4. I do not have the time to test on my own and I have not yet encountered bunkers in any of the games I played so far, alhtough I may soon!

Anyone that has played with/against them knows what can destroy or neutralize a solid concrete bunker and/or whatever is inside?

I.e. would long range HE be of an use at all? Or the only way is to approach with infantry? Any infantry? Or just the one equiped with demo charges? etc. And do not mention flamethrowers please! :-)

I ve found this: http://www.battlefront.com/community/showthread.php?t=98803&highlight=bunker but maybe some of you have additional ideas?

    Any help appreciated!

  5. Thanks for this just installed and it looks great!

    One thing.

My dropbox folders are never named exactly as the gamefile name. I tried to do:

Select game line -->Game -->Edit Game, as you suggest in your doco but when I browse and select the actual dropbox folder (Single/Incoming line) and refresh your app gives me the following errors:

    Traceback (most recent call last):

File "view.py", line 185, in OnGameEdit

File "view.py", line 461, in DoEditGame

File "wx/lib/pubsub/core/kwargs/publisher.py", line 38, in sendMessage

File "wx/lib/pubsub/core/kwargs/publishermixin.py", line 24, in publish

File "wx/lib/pubsub/core/topicobj.py", line 340, in _publish

File "wx/lib/pubsub/core/topicobj.py", line 359, in __sendMessage

File "game.py", line 215, in SetNewDirs

File "gamefilefolder.py", line 182, in SetNewDirs

IOError: [Errno 9] Bad file descriptor

Is there any kind of limitation to what charcters can be used in the dropbox folder name. i.e. one of my dropbox folders is named: Iosef - Viajero

    What am I doing wrong?

  6. Hello:

Would appreciate any advice. Really struggling with tank combat. Trying Chance Encounter v2 and in the first encounter with the enemy, one StuG is destroyed and another has the main gun destroyed. Out of 3 tanks. The feeling is worse as tank combat is so binary. If infantry is hit, you might lose a man or two, rarely the whole squad at one time.

With this mission it seemed that one Sherman had a good position and when you move your tanks over a ridge he will have the first shot. How do you combat that?

    Thanks,

    Gerry

    LOL

This is the essence of CM precisely. Exactly! how do you combat that?

Do a search in the tactic and strategies forum for the old CM or even here. Plenty of good advice.

Spotting: As a starter, spotting first is key. As pointed out above, scout as best you can and try and detect before being detected. Also, a moving tank is spotted faster than a still one, thats probably why the Sherman got shots at you first. Once you know where they are you can try and flank them with your own tanks (turrets turning time is key), or attract their fire first with a semi squad on the flank and then time your own shermans over the ridge to fire.

Armour/ballistsics: Know your tanks, and the enemies, know what can cope with what and from which angles, position accordingly

Hull down, higher ground-slopes: As a general rule positioning your tanks in hull down and if possible in higher ground or upward slopes (with respect to your enemies) will make your tank´s impact angles the worst possible for your opponent (and viceversa) therefore extending the life of your tanks.

Numbers: try to maximize the number of your own tanks firing to each of the enemies. 3 shots vs 1 per each 10-15 seconds will increase your odds, specially if you spotted first.

Etc etc etc etc etc etc

  7. Full squad in big church trying to protect Private Ryan from certain death. Tiger fires at said church killing 1/2 of the squad. Poor remains of squad (including Ryan) ordered to the far side of said church to avoid HE nastiness on the opposite side.

    ...

WTF! what are you guys doing coming back to buddy aid the fallen ones on the exposed side of the church? Are you carrying a white flag at least?!? Damn it. Full squad down the drain. Poor Ryan.

Buddy aid is cool but can have disastrous effects sometimes... It would be nice to a have a "disable buddy aid" button aswell... (maybe there is one and I missed it? If that is the case then I really have to RTFM at some point)

  8. ...

There is really very little cover differential available in a deep woods interior, and thus practically no defender's edge. If the attacker doesn't make the mistake of pushing too hard, too deep into LOS, or of overloading the frontage to lose more men than he needs to to area fire effects, there is no reason whatever to expect the more numerous side to lose.

Great advice, thanks. I ll put it in practice in game at the earliest opportunity. In the mean time I have sent the full quote to my opponent to see if he can pull it off :D

Apologies for the off topic. I am sure similar discussion topics were had in the old CMx1 forum but I think a new tactics and strategy subforum may be also good to have in CM:BN to include this kind of discussions.
