  1. Well playtesting is going well. foid and I are having a cracking battle - a real slugging match with a lot of manoeuvre on both sides. foid has swept aside a forward defensive position, his low and fast T-72s avoiding much of my defensive fire, and is now pressing forward towards his objective in a single envelopment. My policy of forward defence has worked well so far but I can't kill his tanks fast enough...

My T-62s have taken a lot of hits and have returned the punishment with a vengeance, so far both sides have lost 2 tanks. Currently I am in a 3 v 3 tank duel at 1200m that has been going on for some time.

foid is trying to outflank me through a fishing village and is gaining ground, my tanks can't draw a bead on his APCs pushing through the trees...

If anyone wants an interesting armour battle this seems to be shaping up into one - Those T-72s are tough but my older tanks seem to be faster on the draw...

  2. So, so true. I simply can't play single player any more. I just think 'what is the point' and give up even before deploying my troops. Playing against an opponent lets you try to see inside his head and win or lose I tend revel in the little victories.

I don't think I have ever jumped up from my computer and punched the air under any other circumstance than that vital 2000m ATGM shot or that perfect little ambush in CMSF PBEM :D

  3. Luckily I have a document on just that on my computer. Let me quote the relevant parts:

The Green Soldier During the first time in battle for soldiers, their combat performance is usually lower than it was in precombat training. The novice soldiers are also at relatively high risk of being killed or wounded. This is partly because they have not yet learned to identify and respond automatically to the true dangers (such as the specific sounds of incoming artillery or mortar rounds). Under extreme stress, they may experience difficulty with focusing their attention and remembering what they were taught in training. Their ineffectiveness may also be caused by fear induced fatigue. First-battle soldiers are at high risk of becoming battle fatigue casualties. Soldiers in their first time under fire are likely to experience high anxiety (the stages of alarm). Poor showing on first exposure to real battle can be reduced by providing tough, realistic training (especially battle drills under high stress), but it cannot be totally prevented.

The Experienced Veteran. If the soldier does not become a casualty in the first battle, his combat skills will improve quickly over the next few days. His skills continue to improve gradually over the next weeks until he is as good as he can get. An experienced soldier gains confidence in his skill, comrades, and leaders. For him, the stage of alarm is mostly in anticipation. He responds selectively and automatically to the truly dangerous sounds and cues of the battlefield. When the action starts, he immediately achieves the stage of resistance and is remarkably calm as he focuses on his job. However, the veteran is likely to have a considerable rebound of arousal and anxiety when the fight is over. Not all veteran soldiers ever achieve the state of really low fear in action. Some drop to mid levels, yet still perform their duties effectively.

The Overstressed Veteran. If the unit suffers many casualties, however, and the chance of surviving a long war seems poor, the experienced soldier's combat performance begins to decline. It can occur after 14 to 21 days of cumulative combat or even after only a few days of extremely heavy losses. The overstressed veteran becomes more careful, loses initiative, and may be indecisive when he needs to act quickly. The anxiety pattern of an overstressed soldier is doubting his chances of survival -- there were too many close calls in the last battle; too many of his friends were killed (slowly over time or quickly). Under such stress, he feels his own skills are slipping, and it is just a matter of time before he, too, will surely be killed or maimed. Unless he is given the opportunity and help to reduce arousal level and regain some hope, he will soon fail.

No source unfortunately. I just pulled it off the internet in a hurry a few years ago. If anyone wants the full document PM me :)

  4. The stock faces in this game needed a bit of work so let me proudly present:

    Thumb.png

    Faces of the Soviet Union

This mod changes the faces on the Soviet soldiers to give a better feel for the soldiers who actually fought in Afghanistan throughout the war. Most of them are slightly sunburnt ethnic Russians but 20% of the soldiers are of central Asian origin. Non Russians made up a higher proportion of the ground troops in Afghanistan for a number of reasons so they are well represented here.

The mod will pop up on the repository soon, enjoy!

  5. I'll just add my points in here too:

    - BMD-2s contain 85mm PG-7V HEAT rockets, the airborne troops use 58mm PG-16 rounds.

    - The model of the RPG-16 launcher is also wrong. Unlike the RPG-7, the 58mm warhead fits inside of the launcher.

    - BMD-2s fire their bow machine guns even when there are no troops inside to fire them!

    - BMD-2s coaxial MG fires from the ATGM position!

    - There is no way to reload the PPSh AFAIK, there are no 7.62x25mm rounds in any DRA vehicles

    - Vehicles carrying Grenade launchers do not carry extra grenades for their passengers

    - The top hatch on the ZSU-23-4 doesn't open, the commanders model just appears through the armour.

    - The ZSU-23-4 doesn't appear to have a driver when his hatch opens up!

I figure your thread has pictures so more people will look at it ;)

It also looks like we both spotted the lack of a driver on the Shilka :)

  6. I am loving playing around with the game but a couple of things I have noticed so far,

The above sounds a bit negative doesn't it!? I love the early Soviet platoons with their flexibility and firepower and the new vehicles are great. When I find the time I will have to get a few PBEMs going and really sink my teeth into this game!

  7. Well, there is the CMSF FAQ by Stikkypixie and myself, I also am still working on the community strategy guide. The only reason why that wasn't published 'officially' was because of the lack of a good example of a mechanised assault.

I would be happy to join forces and make a mega guide with chapters dedicated to FAQ, glossary, newbie tutorial, basic info and strategy if that is what people want. I have a very nice, professional looking cover page waiting to go and I can provide a certain amount of graphic design to finish it off.

Would anyone be prepared to do something like that? I could finish the strategy guide, provide the FAQ and glossary and do the graphic design, we would need volunteers to finish and compile a basic info and tutorial chapter. I suppose the info would also be relevant to CM:A as well so we could have a cross game mega guide :D
