  1. I don't understand - maybe I didn't make myself clear. The men had routed, its just that they just didn't exist after that so I couldn't get them back.

I understand that if they were in the open they could have run away but they were in the back of a BTR so they couldn't go anywhere. then my command squad could get in the vehicle with the last guy who had not disappeared when it should have been full of panicked men.

  2. I came across an interesting issue whilst playing as the syrians. A platoon in BTR 60's came under fire and lost their command squad as his APC brewed up and this threw the other squads into a panic.

Not a disaster I thoght to myself as I was able to drive the BTRs to a safe location and link them up with their company HQ. However, the men in the BTR's had vanished apart from one guy (With the little exclamation mark). I was even able to get my command squad into the BTR where they would have been.

Surely as the BTR hadn't stopped moving, the men would still exist inside and the company HQ would be able to knock heads and get the men back to the front!

I have a couple of savegames to illustrate my point (No comments on the tactics though, it was a stupid mistake :( )

Another point that I never really brought up before is that there is no elevation restrictions on the tank guns. Try putting a T-62 10m away from an 8 story building and targeting the top floor. The gun doesn't elevate far enough but the shot comes out at a crazy angle to take out the floor.

Minor issues I know but it has punished me more than once!

  3. I just tried again and I realised I was being stupid. I actually have used those georefrence files before (different extention though). They provide elevation data which you can load onto some software (I used arcGIS but maybe GE professional would work). The acompanying image provides an overlay.

I used it to help design a dam but it wouldn't be so great for CMSF, the image would be just fine!

  4. Wow Cpl Steiner - that looks really useful! How do you open the files? Do I need to get my hands on some GIS software?

Also, George MC - is there a way of getting soviet style markings for the Syrian sides briefings?

This is all great stuff, I was just thinking of how to get military maps and markings and a few hours later the forum provides! Thanks guys

  5. American weapons and their crazy names... :o

Slowmotion - I think your problem is that your fireteam doesn't have a CLU. Only the company level javlin team has one of those and that is a pretty huge deal for the marines.

edit - looks like I was a bit slow in posting there!

  6. Funnily enough, I was playing the first marines scenario (v 1.11) and one of my sniper teams opened up with the grenade launcher without any orders - they just saw some syrian troops in the open at about 250m and fired.

At first I thought they had blown my stealth but then they wiped out the squad so I was impressed!

  7. Check on the repository - It was my first attempt so is pretty, but difficult to make a scenario on. At some point I will expand it a bit to give more room to maneuver but that will come as I finish off my map pack.

Ali-Baba, glad you liked it! Any chance of having a look at what you made? I tried to make a scenario on it but didn't do very well

  8. Hi all

Just to announce the release of my latest map "The road to Latakia" for all those who want an impractically large map and battalion sized fights!

Like "Al Beluleyah", the map is based on real life and is as accurate as I could make it from google earth images and a few photos.

It is 2000m x 2500m and is set in a wide, cultivated valley. The M5 road from Latakia to Alleppo runs through it.

I am slowly in the process of mapping a huge area east of Latakia and eventually all the maps will be combined to form enough terrain for an operation sized battle/campaign/metacampaign.

Unfortunately it will be pretty slow as I can only make maps in small doses and these maps are very time consuming. And the area keeps getting bigger :P

The map should pop up on the repository soon..

  9. Who plays red v red here, because suddenly everything feels a bit more vulnerable!

The great thing about the Syrians is that they have such a variety of equipment available so republican guard v regulars or regulars v reservists becomes quite an interesting fight.

Pit the syrian regulars against insurgents too and you have an interesting battle.

I think people who only play as the Americans are missing out on quite an interesting part of the game.

  10. I hadn't really thought about doing it single player. The problem is I am terrible with AI and I have never made a campaign before.

My original idea was to have a 'Brigade commander' to allocate assets/conduct artillery prep/supply and Battalion commanders to do the fighting. You would only need 2-3 people on each side. TBH though I hadn't put much thought into it, I just find making maps relaxing!

Here are some pics of the engagement area:

I am only about a third of the way through the maps though so it will take a while to get it all ready

  11. I managed an excelent ambush in an ongoing game, A platoon of reserve, conscript infantry destroyed a pair of BMP's and a recon platoon for no losses.

To be fair I had guessed what he was going to do (Unload his men at that point) so I just told them all to hide and used a seperate spotter unit to watch them so I could unhide them as soon as they entered the kill zone. There was a certain amount of luck involved though!

The key is to put a building in between you and any of the enemys overwatching troops.

With the Americans though it is probably better to just engage them head on because there is less uncertainty involved. Using conscript reservists modifies your tactics somewhat!

  12. Surely, both rounds would leave the launcher at the same time but at different velocities. Later in flight, the smaller one would slow down to match speeds with the T-HEAT round meaning that it is always ahead the same distance.

Just a theory though - I don't know if the ballistics could be made to match up.

  13. I am in the process of making an "extra large" map of an area east of the port of Latakia. It is going to be 11x6km and will be correct according to the information on google earth to around a 10-20m resolution (1-3 squares) this of course includes terrain elevation, foliage and specific buildings.

Obviously the editor can't support a map this large so I am splitting it up into smaller maps of about 2000x2500m. These maps are separated by the natual terrain in the region so realistically, units in one map couldn't offer direct fire support into another map.

My first attempt was 'Al Beluliyah' (can be found on the repository) but it is small compared with some other maps which are nearing completion.

    Two questions:

    1. Would anyone actually be interested in this concept?

    2. These maps are very large and, although playable on my computer - the graphics (i.e view distance for trees) are not great. Untill I get my graphics card upgraded, would someone mind testing out a new map for performance? I want to see if it will look good on a powerful(ish) PC.

  14. This must have been said before because it seems so obvious to me but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Don't get me wrong, I think that the game is excellent and really has got me back into the series but I have one major gripe.

Whilst playing as the syrians, the thing that really gets me is the way the syrian soldiers stick very close together in a "blob" that means one hit from just about anything wipes out over half the squad and means the rest of them want to dig a hole headfirst.

I can understand that they are not up to western standards of training and that on the move they will tend to bunch up but when in prepared positions surely their officers would spread them out a bit?

Which brings me on to my next point, what happened to foxholes and wire? Surely they can't be that difficult to implement, especially since craters are nicely done and anyone would appreciate a bit of top cover when the arty starts to come down.

Anyway - I'm looking forwards to the new expansions -the Brits are coming! :D
