Its 4 x 4, but trying to get a map that big to actually load is another problem; anything with some elevation changes and a couple of trees will crash to desktop at that size.
I lost so many maps that way

I don't have any of my books here so none of those facts should be taken as gospel, I am probably talking complete rubbish. Anyhow...
They did make up a higher proportion than usual for a number of reasons:
1. "Central Asians would like Central Asians"
2. Lower readiness units from nearby military districts were used for the invasion and later. These had a higher proportion of 'less reliable' central Asians
3. Many of the ethnic Russians were better educated and so knew how to 'play the system' and get out of fighting in Afghanistan.
They were never the majority though, maybe 30%.
I am happy to stand corrected if someone can throw some actual facts my way!

Thanks for that - I had a feeling I was posting absolute rubbish!

Im afraid I can't delve into the files right now but each model has a name similar to the texture name and I think I remember the file extension was .lod or something. Sorry I can't be more help!
-
You know you can swap models right?
Just rename the spy model and textures as fighter ones and your fighters will now appear as spies!

A vehicle goes up in flames during the assault on an enemy trench
Another screenshot from my latest African scenario, currently being playtested with a battle between myself and foid. I am getting a bloody nose as he desperately tries to organise his surprised conscripts into a defence. Will they hold out long enough for the promised reinforcements? Or will the relief force arrive to find the base in enemy hands?

Very nice, this is going to be quite a campaign!
Having made a number of urban maps before (I constantly make maps but almost never release them) I can say that these involve a huge amount of effort. I am impressed by your dedication!

This has got very nasty, very quickly.
I think we can all acknowledge that the war in Iraq (or any war for that matter) was not 'good guys' verses 'bad guys' and that morals in war come in many shades of grey.
I hope both of you to stop the personal attacks before the thread gets locked and someone gets banned. I was enjoying this thread.

Great, send me a PM with your email address and I will send you everything you need!
I can probably handle one more person myself but if anyone wants to try it out with another person that is fine by me as long as I get the feedback.

Yes, I have made British influenced African troops that drive landrovers and other British vehicles
This is actually a screenshot from a new RvR PvP scenario I am working on, if you want to help me test it then just head over here http://www.battlefront.com/community/showthread.php?p=1204091#post1204091 or send me a PM
Mods included in this Pic are MikeyDs African conflict Mod, Birdstrikes European camo Landrovers, my African terrain mod and another mod of mine that swaps in African models into British vehicles.

I have decided to actually produce that African scenario I was talking about! Before I release it I would like some testers to play me in a PBEM game to see how the balance works.
I don't want to release any spoilers about the game so I will just say it is a very large map (Mainly savannah), it involves an assault on a base and it uses a custom TOE. Both sides use lots of GPMGs at platoon level and their recon elements are nothing like the vanilla versions.
It also involves a custom mod to produce the African graphics and TOE which I will include with the scenario.
Any takers? The balance might be a bit off and the terrain isn't 100% done (nothing important is left to do, don't worry!) but it should be fun. I have certainly pushed the engine pretty far in creating this battle!

I actually have a copy of Afghan Breakdown, but no subtitles! And I had heard such good things about that movie

I liked it from what I remember. It is basically aping the classic Vietnam movies but it is a solid war film. I would say that it offers an interesting perspective but from what I remember they really just dressed up the grunts from Full Metal Jacket in Soviet uniforms. FMJ was a good film though so it is difficult to go wrong with that formula
Hopefully however, it is the start of bigger things and we see more Russian war films in the future that ask deeper questions about the Soviet experience of the conflict.
Short version: it is no classic but you haven't wasted your money

Excellent, I'm looking forward to this one!

A very interesting discussion. Thanks
Damien, is there any chance of saying which country produces each type of round? I had assumed it was just US/Russia but then I saw Norinco mentioned which is Chinese.

Thanks for recommending my stuff Sivodsi!
I said I would make Farm Wars available but then the repository went down at the wrong moment and it got forgotten. I have just uploaded it now so it will pop up soon.
I'm still not happy with it, that hill dominates the map too much but right now I don't have the time to change it unfortunately. Maybe in a few months I can give it a workover for a more multidimensional battle.

Welcome to the forum!
As with all BFC games I think the thing to do is ignore any and all release dates and just wait until it is done - their games tend to get pretty spectacularly delayed!
Having said that, listening to the noises coming from the forum I would guess this title is shipping relatively soon. How Soon? Probably within 3 months is my guess but I don't have any privileged access to the game or anything

Great AAR, and very interesting battle to simulate. I was interested to see that you did just about as well as the Soviets!
Those PPSh submachine guns must be really deadly in house to house fighting, Im sure they will make me look forward to the eastern front game even more!

There is no autoloader on the T-62, but the Israelis would be better with T-55s anyway. Yes the sights were worse than on the newer Israeli tanks but the guns and armour were similar.
-
The Syrians don't have a Plt HQ. Just the Lieutenant who attaches himself to a normal squad. The Soviet army was like this back in the 70's so the Syrians must have copied them.
CMSF simply attaches the Lt to a squad and gives it an extra RPG which is then split off to give the player a bit of flexibility.
Also:
I would give the Syrians lots of old T62s and T55s with very low experience (which would be historically correct) vs. old T55s with high experience for the Israelis. This ^

A Shilka is vulnerable to said laser guided whoop ass, especially ones that home in on radar sources. However, if they are used right, they can be a nasty surprise for anything that gets close and low enough. An A-10s cockpit is armoured against 23mm fire but the rest of the plane isn't and those 4 cannons shoot out a frightening amount of lead!
Communication is of course key for the for the Syrians, the Shilkas have to know when and where the aircraft are coming from so they can switch on their radars at just the right moment, lock on and fire before immediately going dark again and moving to avoid the inevitable counterattack.
This is assuming of course that they are well enough hidden not to be spotted in the first place! Without a layered air defence they are very vulnerable to planes operating out of their range.
But yeah, as AkumaSD says, I'm pretty sure they will be ground attack only in CMSF.

Having read the list of Syrian air support in more detail I am even more excited but I am surprised at the lack of armed MI-8/MI-13 Helicopters, also the Syrian Gazelles which caused the Israelis such a headache back in 1982.
Are they deliberate omissions?

Awesome - I am looking forward to this so much!

Thank you, interesting stuff. I had noticed a lot of fighting for a hearts and minds campaign.

But if you ignored the US TOE and made the guntruck look like a humvee with a US crew you would be getting somewhere...
