  1. Grunt, your link leads to a "Chimera Mk II". Did you spell that right? I've read about the heavy infantry, and here is how I think a 3-man squad should be: 1 Squad Leader Equipped with a 14mm LMG, improved AT grenade launcher, and commander capabilities. 1 HMG Specialist Equipped with 1 20mm HMG, improved AT grenade launcher, and can fire while moving. 1 Rocket Specialist Equipped with a bazooka. Bazooka ammo: 6 (5 mounted on his body and 1 already in the tube). Note: all heavy infantry should have zoom functions in their visors. Finally, where are the heavy infantry? Anyone who wants to have heavy infantry, post here for our petition to get the heavy infantry by summer!
  2. Of course I was howling, jby, Jung was attempting to pull off a last minute win for himself. After a hard fought game, it was really no wonder. We probably should have delivered more turrets at House to House, I'm getting better at turret drops, as Jung will attest. And if it's any comfort to you, I killed Jung's cutter a few seconds after he broadcast his somewhat triumphant message, and then I charged after STONEWALL, but time ran out before I could put in a fatal shot. The games yesterday were fun. I nailed Jung's Hurricane with AT grenades, and then said a simple truth: "It's never too late for revenge." At Desert Mesa, it was one of our better games, jby. My idea to probe out Jung's position worked and I got to blow up some turrets, sensors, and sensor jammers. It was also nice to see STONEWALL again. As for crucial mistakes, I think it was not enough turrets, and not being careful enough to guard what we had, but it might not have made a difference since someone on the other side was raining mortar rounds down on us. Any idea who it was, and if it's you, Jung, was it in revenge for the time on Black Canyon when I mortared your base into oblivion without knowing the rule about mortar restrictions on that map?
  3. I almost forgot, we should give the Loki jump jets like infantry, only much more powerful. And in addition...(Chant begins) We want heavy infantry! We want heavy infantry! We want heavy infantry! And dedicated APC's to carry them!
  4. Nice video, Grunt! I've known about Big Dog for some time, thanks to CPU Magazine. The concept of walkers is not new, and I got to experience them during my brief stint in BF 2142. They have a lot of promise for this game, giving it possibly a new dimension. Here are some walker ideas I have: Odin Command Walker Weapons: 2 90mm cannon battery, ATGM People: 2 (1 driver with the 90mm battery, and the command position with full command vehicle capabilities and ATGM launcher Description: A four-legged command vehicle with a top speed of 29 m/s. Will dominate the battlefield with command and all out firepower. But sensor signature will be large. Loki Scout Walker Weapons: 1 20mm cannon, AT Grenade launcher People: 1 Description: A two-legged scout vehicle with a top speed of 60 m/s and mobile sensor and jammer to stay undercover and still see it all. By the way, Grunt, I hope to see you on Sunday too.
  5. Yeah, and what if you're in a cauldron of fire from all sides at point blank? I agree, and that is another reason not to do what Jung did at Forsaken (unless you're him). The Bacchus has a titanic sensor signature, so my bots will know its location right away. I also agree with Jung about the overuse of Bacchi. Put too many of them away from your defenses and you're doomed to lose them all. That's what the bots at the objective I described are for. I agree. I pretty much followed the pattern laid down in Jung's last post at Forsaken, where all but one of my bots were scheduled to land in the DZ, a mixture of Paladins and a Apollo. But I did place one cutter to the NW for a crater clear approach, where Jung's Baccuhus caught it. I might take jby's advice of being commander next time it's 1-on-1. Finally, Jung, I'm sorry for blowing sky high, but it was quite a nasty shock to suddenly lose all my dropships and hear you talk about me ending up with the same fate as you. True, aerial denial is part of the game, but what ticked me off was the placement, not the unit itself. Sealing off the S aide of the map with the Bacchus or some AA turrets in order to channel me through the N side of the map could have been another solution.
  6. Ok, the reason I lost all my dropships on Forsaken is that although I originally put all but of my bots in the deployment zone, they were eventually cut down by your defenses, resulting in them trying to drop to the N side consistently, where you placed you Bacchus to catch them, and thus the accusation. While I agree that all units are fair play unless stated otherwise, it was your placement on a field where a missile tower covered most of the area that killed my chances and raised my ire. Here's my answer to the first quote: Can anyone else back that claim up? I've never heard you talk about that method as part of your strategy. As for the second quote: You actually thought I had a choice? When all my bots continued to drop into your Bacchus' basket? After all, if you deny the skies, you force your opponent to use the deployment zones, at which point he's virtually temporarily lost his entire dropship force, since he can't use it until he brings down the air cover, by which time he could have lost his entire dropship force from bots dropping into the fire. Of course. I've got my own variant from hell on your unethical use of Bacchuses for Recon in Force. In this spin-off, I cover the entire field with AA coverage, forcing you to use the deployment zone, the only one on the entire map. Then I mine the deployment zone until it's black with mines, then concentrate turrets and most of my bots (leaving a few around the objective for points) around the zone so when you drop, so you end up in a detonating shooting gallery. Then you might see how you like it when someone sets you up to fall, like you did today. By the way, thanks for the kudos on my turret drop. Since I was defending the objective, my priority was defense, and the highly concentrated drop I used delivered that in spades. By the way, did anyone else hop on? I had to leave for dinner. Should we reschedule the Wednesday games to 7 PM EST and hope others can make it, or is some other time in order?
  7. What happened? Why didn't anyone show up? And why did Jung cheat on Forsaken by bringing in a extra Bacchus to catch and destroy all my dropships? I'm waiting. And the New Geneva Space Viking Convention needs a new rule: Thou shalt not use Bacchuses on certain maps like Forsaken to cheat and eliminate all the enemy's dropshipis at once. All you'll get is one unhappy player. The only thing I'm certain of is that I beat Jung at Dead Gulch with a good series of turret drops, and I sent a parting gift to him just before I left his set-up at Forsaken, as I sent down fire, brimstone, and smoke on his base.
  8. Count me in! I could use some more excitement. In fact, this game could use a boost in online activity. With another time to play, we could see more people and maybe 4 on 4 will become more regular. Since I'm in Minnesota, I can play for an hour until nature calls (and by that I mean dinner!), so 8 PM EST is fine by me.
  9. Actually, Paul, it equals 5 PM PDT. If you or anyone else ever needs to convert time zones for our matches, try this site. It's what I use.
  10. G'day mark487! We're having another good set of rounds soon. They'll be at 8 PM EST on Wednesday, which works out to Thursday 11:00 AM your time. Think your shift schedule will allow you to join us?
  11. Well actually Phonan, I meant both figuratively and literally! Also, CST is 1 hour behind the EST that you're used to. Jung, as for 8 EST, that's fine by me. I should be able to play for an hour, until dinner beckons.
  12. I almost forgot, back on Friday, Jung said we should get together online more often, and suggested Wednesday 6 EST. I say bring it on! It's about time we had more action around here.
  13. I'll remember, and I'm hard at work formulating a new plan for victory at Haven! The reason I was on today was to see if I could catch anyone who had missed the memo about the change of plans. Also, I know what you say when you say that you can't bring yourself to get a gaming laptop. They're quite powerful (SLI and RAID built in along with a 20 inch display!), but the heaviest caliber are still usually in the $4,000 US dollar range. By the way, jby, if you can beat my Rock of Gibraltar Ice Field Defense you found when you joined with about 10 min to go, I'll give you... dang, I can't think of anything to give. Except... The jby strategic penetration Medal! We should come up with some other medals, aside from the "Phonan crazy driving medal with gold wings" and my very own "152 sniper rifle marksmanship medal with rangefinding scope".
  14. Well, Phonan, yesterday was nice but only Jung and Ruaanith showed up. If you can play today, I can certainly do the same.
  15. Friday- Well, none of the above happened. We had some great games, but the only people to show were Jung and Ruaanith. Still, Phonan said he could be open tomorrow, so I can only hope. And a number of people who didn't get the memo could show up on Sunday too.
  16. But I used smoke back on Forsaken a couple of weeks back, because it was the only asset I had available at the time, and I sent it down to the NE in an effort to delay the fire coming from that direction. Was there anything wrong with that?
  17. Thursday- Headed online and was pleasantly surprised by STONEWALL at Dead Gulch. Although it was too late for me to win the game, I did pop him off at several kilometers while he was using my tactic of being up on the N hill. Then a round at Low Dunes, where things went quite well. I scored three flags and had Jung join in the last minutes of the game. I told him that his idea of fighting on Friday was fine by me. I was intending to keep fighting with him at Forsaken, but a server disconnect put an end to that. Well, look's like tomorrow's the big day for fighting, owing to Easter, and I hope we have a lot of people, maybe 4 on 4, and if we're lucky, 5 on 5.
  18. Originally posted by Jung: Now that you've revealed that voting in a team commander limits everyone else, I'm more than willing to go with the latter interpretation. And Phonan, Friday afternoon is fine by me. Name your time and marshal your forces.
  19. Now that I've heard it from you, I don't feel so worried about mines. But I have to disagree with one thing: Originally posted by poesel71: From my experience, cutters are relatively easy meat. They're slow moving, have big slab sides so if their sides are turned to you, you have a target you can kill at ranges of up to 4 km, if you're as good as I am at marksmanship. The only time I worry about killing a cutter is when it's facing me from the front. Then it become more challenging, but you can always penetrate the cutter from the front by shooting it beneath its blade when it's raised. But the thing that bugs me the most about the cutter is its lack of ammo. Only 200 AP rounds?  Heck, a 20mm Paladin has 400 AP and 200 HE, a Hermes has 600 AP and 100 HE, and the same goes for the 20mm Apollo. Why is this and what could be done about it? As I mentioned in my previous posts, I want to have an experiment about team commanders next Sunday. What do you think?
  20. As noted in my Das Noob topic, I'm proposing that we have some rounds next Sunday to determine whether or not a appointed team commander would make a difference. Now to lay down the scenario. How does this sound: The first round will be on Recon In Force, and only Water will have a team commander, Blood will use the normal command setup. The second round will be at House to House, and this time Blood will have the dedicated team commander. Also, I'd like to be the Water team commander for the Recon In Force round. Any suggestions? And anyone who wants to join my side and rule in triumph?
  21. Well, jby, my problem, which I noted in the Bloody Sunday topic, was that the enemy had put mines all around the objective area, except the rear. But that's not a problem anymore, not only because you've explained why it's okay, but because I evaded all the mines back on that round on Sunday. I know that the back-door strategy is vital, so that's why I proposed the rule.
  22. I agree, jby, as long as you are attempting to destroy Paladin SAMs. I now propose my own rules, which will handle Objective games, since everyone else wants to handle CTF and Territory: Thou shall not mine the back of the objective area on Raid. It's stupid, it cuts off a useful back door, and will probably raise a howl of protest from the other side. Thou shall not either defend or attack Recon In Force without at least one infantry squad. Believe me, defending with an infantry unit sure came in handy for me last evening, when I was trying to lure people onto the server with my presence. I ended up with 39 kills, a good deal of them scored by infantry.
  23. Now, a manual for the future... 152mmDumbRocket's Commanders Manual For Victory This is not a satire. This is a real manual for those who will have to take the role of team commander in the near future. I'll cut to the chase. Here's what you should know and do: Upon deciding to join the party, get the full version, so you can play with people who have class (but still expect a few bad apples). Select a name. Try to keep it within the bounds of good taste, so nothing like "Ipwnz", "U----orz", anything degrading another person, or anything involving evil dictators or their subordinates, or any combination of any element just listed here. Play for several weeks in standalone only, building up your skills so you can make a good showing. When you make your debut online, making sure to type in the chat window so everyone doesn't think you just started playing yesterday. For extra credit, use the push-to-talk feature if you have a microphone. To use it, just hold down P while talking. Come on, if you have a microphone, it's easy! Here are some rules for the conduct of a future commander: A commander has to be considerate so anyone at all will listen to him. So don't put others down with things like "Boy, u ----". Don't put boasts up. Don't type in all caps. Don't use L33T to great extent. And for Pete's sake, don't type anything like this: "IM THE BEST YOU CANT BEAT ME L0L!!!11!! Don't try to vote yourself team commander all the time. If you don't make it the first time, don't try again in that round. Failing to heed my advice will probably result in everyone leaving the server instantly as soon as you arrive. Also, don't try to end the scenario constantly if you don't get your way. It's not being a good sport. Now for the stuff you do once you get there: Try to sound like you have a plan, and don't say "D00DS we're going to utterly r0xx0r their s0xx0rs and show them how UBER we are!1!1!!!". That won't get you any players to be on your side (except the noobs who either don't know any better or are usually suckered by jerks). Use the Mercury CMD to put down various deployables that you can access by using the Cntrl-D combo. Finally, if you run into a bad player, like the one I outlined a few posts back, take action. The first time he does something bad and offensive, tell him to cut it out. The second time he does it, tell him to cut it out. The third time... kick him to the other team, while relying on the other team to fire him back to you, thus trapping the problem player in a ping-pong game of side-kicking that he can only escape if he leaves, and if you can't do that, you may have to hound him out of the server, or call on the admin to eject him out of the server. But above all, don't sit back in "God mode", as some put it, but instead be there on the ground with your men, judge the situation for yourself, and lead your team to victory. The end of yet another insightful post. And again, I hope I didn't offend some people with my use of L33T, but it was solely for example.
  24. I have an experiment in mind. Let's spread the best and worst players who show up next Sunday evenly and then have one side vote a commander, while keeping the usual status quo on the other side, and see who wins. Maybe we'll see whether or not a dedicated commander could make a difference on the field of battle.
