  1. Well, mark487, no one's ever called me commander , or voted me into the commander's spot, because we get along well enough that we don't need a commander to keep us together, but the commander's role could become vital if the satirical scenario in my Das Noob topic ever comes to fruition. Check the Das Noob topic for the solution, just as I'm done talking about the idea I have for next Sunday's games, which will also be in the Das Noob topic.
  2. Nice games this Sunday, but one thing is bugging me. The round we had at Raid. There were mines around the objective, laid down by jby, Ithai, and Redcon. Were they allowed to do that? As far as I know, it's not allowed without mutual consent between the two sides. And Jung, could you print the first edition of the New Geneva Space War Convention? I'll be happy to sign it. If you can't get enough material, we could always start a new topic to gather it.
  3. Yes, jby, but I was aiming for depth. And those aren't all of the details, but I'll leave finalization of those when and if Battlefront ever contacts me about my concept.
  4. I thought of a great design for DT WWII. Why not call it DT WWII: Blended Boundaries, and make it a game where each player has intensive control over his avatar? Here's what I mean: The player should be able to create his own soldier, select the uniform, select a helmet, and decide on the weapons he could carry in these categories: Main Weapon (Assault Rifle [Yes they had one back then!], Rifle, Carbine, Sub-Machine Gun, or Light Machine Gun) Maximum number: 1 Auxiliary (Rifle Grenade Launcher, Bayonet) Maximum Number: N/A Sidearm (Any Pistol of the period) Maximum Number: 2 Grenades (Any from the period) Maximum Number: 6 Anti-Tank: (Any from the period) Maximum Number: 1 Then the player could play on any battle ground from WWII and a few possible ones, such as one in Ireland, under the historical assumption that Germany launched a diversionary attack in Ireland to facilitate the invasion of Great Britain. From there, the player should be able to create a online squad with the standard loadout just described and fight with other squads for a yearly championship. Vehicles The focus of the game should be on infantry and although jeeps of various kinds and infantry carriers from Bren gun carriers to half tracks of various kinds can be used, no tanks should be allowed. That's all I have to say on this prospect.
  5. I'm really sorry, mark487. I thought it would be morning in Sydney, but, as Jung pointed out to me today, and as I found out later, Sunday at 3 PM EST is actually 6 AM Monday on your side of the world. Could we have another match soon at a time you can play at?
  6. Based on an actual post. 152mmDumbRocket's Guide On the Soon-to-come Trouble For DropTeam, one of the best games of all time. This guide will show (satirically) how a flood of new players could cause severe problems for the old guard (that's us), in the form of a list of the characteristics of the scum of the online gaming community (probably drawn up by themselves) upon joining us decent people and all the other decent people then joining. Here we go: 1: Pick a name such as Superpwnz, , youzlam3, m3tHhEaD, or anything else that doesn't make any sense at all. Another good source of names is something foul that involves animals, or anything involving toilets, like raBBit---- or RAT@$$ (sorry Rat, I'm not referring to you, I'm referring to the scum who might take your name and your lunch money while they're at it. I should know, because during a brief stint in BF2142, I saw jerks teamkill people just so they could get to a turret or vehicle first, and was teamkilled by these same people for the same reasons). 2: Forget about the forums for now because you are too 1337 to pay attention in any case. 3: As soon as you get your demo download and install it, put up your own listening server, without bothering to update your copy. For names follow Step 1, with such examples as Ubergame, coolserver, irawks, etc. 4: After several weeks of demoing and Steps 1-3, get the full version. 5: After two days of full time playing with the full version and Steps 1-3, update (Jaws theme starts playing). 6: Head online and start to make decisions that will win the battle. Announce yourself as the ultimate ultra-uber 1337 rawkzors da sawkzors ruler of DropTeam and get to work by constantly voting to make yourself commander of your team, and trying constantly to end the scenario that's currently playing, distracting everyone else when they should have their game on. Say that everyone else who doesn't support you ----- and you will rox the battlefield. 7: Shortly upon making your debut wonder why some guys named 152-whatever it was and kim2 cut you down when you were in an uber Thor and could not have been beaten. Call them cheaters and threaten to report them to... whoever handles that sort of thing. 8: A short time later, head online for revenge and find that 152 dude again. Find him playing against some other guys and join up with them. Instantly tell one of them, some guy named Jung, to pwn 152 and get the flag, while continuing Step 6. If he's busy doing something else and/or doesn't take you seriously, call him a chicken and say he's only there to be insulted. Call him Dung and say he's about that valuable to the team. 9: Upon everyone in your team joining 152, call them sad and losers and say "I will pwn you!!!" That will scare them enough to leave you victorious. 10: Upon the Jung-jby-kim2-152 dynasty's victory, vow to get even. 11: Discover there's a forum to talk about things like this and join with another appropriate name. 12: Burst into the forum scene and start complaining in a vitriolic post about how Jung shot you down with infantry in your last online battle and how that was cheating. After that, spam the forums with stories about how cool you are. Don't forget all the 1-word replies! 13: Find your hated archenemy 152 and spam his Das Noob topic with stuff like "You ---- i rock you cheat". Pay no attention to the fact that he can't tell BASIC from COBOL (hence no ability to cheat) and to the fact that he can blow up your 1337-handled Cutter from 4 km with a 120mm HEAT round while yawning. At the same time, start your very own topic and ramble endlessly about how cool you are. Again, don't forget the 1-word replies! 14: Insult everyone on the forums and then say it was your little kid brother. If no one believes you, then say it was your sister. If they still don't get it, call them morons. It helps them understand. 15: Continue your you topic and talk about how you destroyed some guy named Redcon and sent him running crying to his blankie, and then put Redcon down when he says he owned you in the rear. After all, if he says that, you must have taken him out seriously. 16: Upon getting some jerks to join you, hatch your ultimate plan: the takeover of the super-roksors! After getting the scum (and n00bs who didn't know what they were in for) of the DropTeam community on your side, form a new dynasty, and introduce the tradition of the letters of your dynasty's name joining to make unpleasant words, like Power Uber Snipers (PUS). Do this on the forums, where everyone can see this. After all, you and your men are so uber that everyone else will shrink in fear and let you win the day come Sunday. Then take on everyone and remember, you are too uber to lose. 17: On Sunday, discover that the Jung-jby-kim2-152 and Phonan-STONEWALL-Redcon-Foxbat dynasties have united in the Diamond Hawk Dynasty, out to get your tail as a trophy. Lead your men into battle, for everyone on the other side are chickens, cheats, hackers, cowards, n00bs, or all of the above. 18: On the destruction of your dynasty and the inflow of fresh blood from your doomed group to the Diamond Hawks, and your screaming something incoherent over the voice channel, get all the jerks you can find together and make another dynasty. Then, as a full fledged player, make yourself and the others useful mentors to the n00bs who are fresh off the boat and take them into the new dynasty. Train them by assuming they know the controls as if they were born with them implanted in their heads, and by calling them n00bs every time they fall victim to your guns. If they leave, call them wimps and say they hack to cheat, and cheat to hack. Well, that's it. I hope I didn't offend some people.
  7. Yeah, I had some fun times with Kim2, I invited him over to the Sunday games back on Monday. A better driver and gunner than WingTips, but still in need of improvement. Just like myself when I first went online... On Haven, WingTips tried to carry away the flag in a Tempest (boy, you don't see very many of those nowadays), but the defenses stopped him. The second time he tried (in a Shrike), I stopped him. On Collins Depot, I got a brief taste of revenge. I had seen Phonan menacing us in a Viper in the previous round, so I decided to get revenge, and grabbed him briefly with the winch seconds before I got caught by AA. But still, it was funny to see Phonan shouting "152?" hehehehe . Anyway, there were some hard fought and bitter battles, but they were a lot of fun. I hope we see more like them. Check my soon to be posted satirical guide of how a flood of new players will ruin this awesome, well balanced, groundbreaking game on the Das Noob topic.
  8. It's Daylight Savings Time today. Let's hope everyone gets to the server on time.
  9. Yes, so did I but I couldn't rest until I was sure. As for Poesel not handing his bots so well, we should see about that on next Sunday's games, if he comes.
  10. Thanks, Phonan. I made that awesome shot on Dead Gulch, when I was up against STONEWALL. He had turreted the N hill and I was sniping his turrets from over the edge. The 554 meter shot was the last in a string of kills with AT Grenades, and was the longest. After that, I got so excited that I tried for a 640 meter shot on another turret, but the grenade landed just to the left. Your EMP-Infantry combo sounds nice, and it could come in real handy. I'll keep it in my bag of tricks. And yes, I know the joy of blowing things up with infantry in sneak attacks, but I've also been caught off guard by Jung and Redcon, so I've learned to respect the little men with jet packs, stealth, and AT Grenades.
  11. Actually, poesel71, you can return to the unit you were in before you pressed TAB by pressing TAB again . And Phonan, I know what you're talking about when you warn about going off a cliff. It's happened to me a few times, and I've learned to be careful.
  12. You could observe both whether or not you're driving a unit other than the two you're mentioning by observing one and switching to the other whenever you feel like it, but there is something to be said for taking control of one of the units in your scenario. For instance, if you're in one unit, you can hide behind the terrain with probably greater success than the bot and you can decide by your timing whether to attack along with your other bot in a double pincer, or to let the other bot serve as a distraction while you sneak up behind the enemy and let them have it. Remember, their side and rear armor is more vulnerable, but so is yours! For getting some street smarts fast, I recommend the Apollo 120mm light tank. It armor is pretty vulnerable on every side except the front, so this will teach you how to hide and survive while still blowing the bots up. It sports the same 120mm gun as the Thor MBT (that's what I assume you mean by "big tank"), with far more speed and a lower profile. Plus, it's far more available than a Thor (usually 16 Apollos and 8 Thors per round). This next question may sound unrelated: Why did Rommel give the British so much trouble? A lot of the answer to that question lies with the British: flimsy fuel cans (It was considered a good effort if a truckload intended to carry 70,000 gallons of fuel ended up with 30,000 at its destination), suicidal British armor tactics (naval broadside style while Rommel's 88s cut them down from dug-in positions with the barrels at ground level), bad signals discipline (Rommel had a mobile listening unit listening to all British signals and knew his enemy's plans), a certain American ambassador (who kept telling Washington about British plans, strengths, and positions while his messages were intercepted, so Rommel was often better informed about British plans than the field commanders), and bad British habits (Eight Army inspector of military equipment, J.K. Stanford, tells of how "officers, sent down to Suez for tank spares needed urgently, had to wait a day because ten tons of beer was number one priority for unloading."). But one of the worst problems the British had was having their headquarters far behind the lines. General Beresford-Peirse had his headquarters 60 miles (96.5 km) behind the lines and the divisional headquarters for 7th Armoured was 30 miles behind the lines for Battleaxe (in which Rommel's 88s blew the British Mk. 2 Matildas away from dug-in positions on Halfaya Pass). For Crusader, the headquarters for General Cunningham was 80 miles behind the fighting at Sidi Rezegh. And General Ritchie's headquarters was again 60 miles behind the lines during the Battle for Gazala. The point is, a person, in order to be an effective commander, should be as close to the fighting as possible, to see the situation for themselves and to make decisions on the spot. Here's some final advice. On the server on Sunday, you'll find me under the name I have here. In the chat bar, I'll commonly be referred to as "152". On the voice channel, I'll be referred to as "One-fifty-two" or simply as "One-five-two". If you have a microphone, hold down P for as long as you're talking and everyone on your team will be able to hear you. To chat with your team, press Enter, type what you need to, and press Enter again. If you want to chat globally across team boundaries, hold down Control while pressing Enter. After you're done typing, press Enter to send. We prefer that you give ideas for winning the battle on the team chat. I hope this helps.
  13. G'day mark487! You can sit back in god mode with full control, but where's the fun, or the sense, in that? Often you have to make on-the spot decisions and reclining back while watching it all unfold is not always a good idea. My approach, (which, IMAO, is the best approach ) is to be on the ground at all times, but to make frequent references to the tactical map to give orders, and to see the different units you're up against. With this approach, you can be on the spot and see what is going on firsthand, while still having full command and a full view of the world around you with a simple tap on the space bar, so you can give orders to any of your bots to move them as the situation demands, and drop whatever you want. Also, it can turn the tide of battle if, say, you see something important. If you're already in a unit, you have the ability to instantly respond to the situation and possibly save the game. Another good reason to stick with my approach is my belief (and the belief of good old General George S. Patton, Jr.) that no plan survives first contact with the enemy. Somehow, someway, our best plans usually don't completely work in some way, so it's a very good idea to be on the ground to adjust your forces accordingly. I did a check on time zones, and you would be 7 hours behind us North Americans (Jung's from Toronto, I'm from Minnesota), which means if you want to come to our great big rounds we hold every Sunday at 3 PM EST, you'd have to up and ready by 8 AM your time. So if you want to come for some advanced fun (and by that I mean no spray and pray, moderate use of emoticons, no proclamations of uberness [unless it's deserved], the use of voice communications for reasons other than goofing off, and no put downs about other players like you've probably seen in other games [for instance, "You ---- n00b!!]), then get to bed early and come on in!
  14. Tuesday- Today I had a great round of CTF at New Yosemite with someone named kim2. After a long Verdun-style bombardment, we went in and got the flag twice. For some reason, kim2 couldn't hear my voice comm. and had to use the chat window all the time. I don't know if it was my position in front of my laptop's microphones or kim2's connection wasn't fast enough to handle my voice communications, but we had a great time and he or she might come over on Sunday, so score one for the industrious sharpshooter! Oh, and Snively, I can give you some tips on how to survive version 1.3.5: Infantry can be deadly if used correctly. But don't go running around on say Ice Field like a newly-born n00b where everyone can see you coming. -Try to use infantry on maps like The Dam, where cover is plentiful and you will be almost impossible to spot until its too late. -Going prone (B button) will increase accuracy and make you even harder to spot. -Jump jets (X button) will enable you to move long distances fast but will make you show up on enemy sensors. -Hold cntrl and press N to bring up the squad menu to set things like formation and spacing. Now to specifics: -There are 4 different kinds of infantry squads: Rifle, HMG (Heavy Machine Gun), Ion, and Engineer. -The basic infantryman (5 of these in 1 Rifle squad) has 2 weapons: 10mm assault rifle (with 200 rounds, good only for killing other infantry and sensors and sensor jammers AT Grenade launcher, with a maximum effective range of 300 meters for most people (my all-time record kill with AT Grenades is 554 meters  ), and with 6 grenades. Follow the same rules for targeting (aiming for the sides and rear) like you would for a vehicle. Treat it like you would a ace in the hole, and beware Hermes =8-(). In HMG squad, (4 Riflemen and 1 Heavy Machine Gunner), the HMG man is loaded as follows: 20mm HMG, with 350 rounds, a chainsaw, just like its vehicle-mounted cousin, with a shorter effective range. Can only be fired from standing or prone positions. HMG man has shorter range jump ability but jets recharge faster. In Ion squad (4 riflemen and 1 Ion man): 6mm Ion cannon, small but with virtually unlimited range and no delay to target. Will require a lot of firing, though. Has same limited jumping ability as HMG man. In Engineer squad (4 riflemen and 1 engineer): Engineer, same loadout as Rifleman, but with limited jump jets. Has ability to capture buildings but only 1 Engineer squad is issued per round, so use them well. See if that helps Snively.
  15. Sorry for violating the New Geneva Space War Convention, but I did kill off one Bacchus and numerous deployables during my bombardment. Speaking of which, could you put the rules of that convention up here so everyone knows what's a do and what's a don't? Originally posted by Jung: Of course, Jung, and/or in drink. You should have seen jby's impression of you at the end of our CTF game at Low Dunes! Originally posted by Jung: Good job! So why didn't you return some rounds back to me?
  16. Yeah, jby, I thought the game was lost at first. But I managed to decimate your defenses, grab the flag, and wait for you to come with mine. After that, on the second flag run, I grabbed the flag, ran past one of your Apollos and came over the rise just as you killed yourself. If you had delayed your death by 1 second...=8-(). Back at Black Canyon, my idea to bring Verdun home to Jung really worked (aside from his sputtering ), and and I got a few good shots, such as shooting down WingTips' dropship at the enemy base . Oh, by the way, Jung, there was only one mortar at Black Canyon yesterday, and that was me. We should really try to get as many players as we can for next week. How about we all set up our draglines and look for online players throughout this week to inform them about Sunday's games? My slot for searching should be from 6-8 EST (may vary by circumstances).
  17. Wednesday- I will keep this topic going, but its continuity is limited by the number of sever battles on any day other than Sunday. What I can say is that judging by the new names in the Replay menu, I'd say that we have a lot of new players, which means hope for this topic. And I found out some more info about RAT@$$. According to the Replay menu, he hasn't been on since the 10th. I hope he comes back, and that he's a little better after a lot of standalone practice (Hey, it works for me ).
  18. I agree. I'd love to see Treachery (the mountainous ice map) somewhere other than standalone, so I can show off my skills on that map. And Clay, in the next version of DropTeam, could you have the Hide and Seek map brought back?
  19. Nice, I never thought of that method. I've used the Ion units on certain maps (Dead Gulch for instance) in standalone as a "Weapon of Doom" with multiple Ion units shredding the enemy from the hills, but I'd love to see what you're talking about, Jung. As for the sound, I like it enough that I can be around it without losing my mind.
  20. Ah well, so much for my original 7 flavors post. Here's my revised list of Paladin-infantry combos after Jung's and jby's posts and a little standalone experience with the 76mm Paladin: 20mm and HMG or Rifle infantry (still a chainsaw, this could be deadly, esp. if Jung and STONEWALL team up  ) 76mm and HMG infantry (Good all-around combo, could become a mainstay  ) Ion and Ion infantry (Have had standalone experience with the Ion Thor and loved it. Next time we meet on the field of battle I'll try to show you what I can do with it. But back to my opinion. An ion vehicle usually needs to stand in one spot to be effective so I can't say why anyone would take a Ion Paladin. Unless you're high up and have an Ion infantry squad with you, then you could do something...)
  21. Yeah jby, I'll try to get some practice with the infantry in the Paladin in standalone and then maybe we can have some practice online? Originally posted by jby Yes, that's what it is, jby. A bus that comes in 7 different flavors: 20mm (chainsaw, if combined with HMG infantry could be a battle decider ) 76mm (better range, nice firing rate, but not enough bite , needs all the help it can get from infantry ) Ion (no real use other than popping tires  , since it has to move all the time, infantry wouldn't be a good idea ) ATGM (great if you find a concealed place with infantry to guard you ) EWV (the best kind of Paladin, invisible to bots, almost immune to AT grenades, and with a infantry escort it could also be a battle decider ) Light Mortar (useful if you know what you're doing and again infantry could guard you) Long Range SAM (always great for area denial but infantry wouldn't be as great with it as with other Paladin-inf combos). Also, in my opinion, Jung's right, we've got to have another all human infantry vs. tankbots battle soon, so let's see if we can rustle up more real players for the glory.
  22. I have an idea for tomorrow's games. Could we have at least one Objective round where all the bots are sidelined on the far ends of a map and have all the real players mix it up with infantry only? Or maybe have some bots in the action to level the playing field but making sure they only had infantry? Turrets would be allowed as well and maybe SAM Paladins but all the action would be with real players and optionally bots using infantry.
  23. Wednesday- I've been going on the server for the past few days now, trying to lure people onto the server by my presence for some good games and a chance to inform them about the battles we all love on Sunday, but with no success. Does anyone have any tips about what time ordinary people go on the server on any day of the week other than Sunday?
  24. Yeah, jby, I know how you feel. Phonan wasn't around for much of the Low Dunes game because of connection issues, so it was me alone against both of you. jby, you did well again at Low Dunes, it looks like my mastery of that map is over! On the other hand, Ice Field, The Dam, and Dead Gulch were all ours! The players and their capabilities around for this Sunday: Blood: STONEWALL (Vet) Phonan (Vet) Redcon (Vet) Water: Jung (Vet) jby (Vet) Myself (Semi-vet but I'm on my way!) Foxbat (Seemed like a vet but I wasn't certain) On Ice Field, Phonan and Redcon broke out infantry and caused some real trouble, but Jung and I took care of them and we got enough units into the base to secure victory. They stuck with them at The Dam round, and we had our hands full trying to watch our backs, but our strategy worked. Jung and the others went to capture the NE base, while I distracted the opposition at the dam long enough to make the plan work. From there its was non-stop. Redcon and Phonan continued to use infantry and we still had our hands full, but we stopped the little men menace. Phonan tried to sneak in on the dam from the SE with a Shrike, but I spotted him and warned jby. At Dead Gulch, it was another hard-fought round. I deployed the engineer infantry and captured the W ion tower and SW missile tower. From there its turned into a slugging match where STONEWALL employed my trick from last week with 120mm Thor on top of the N hill, but although he killed a lot of units, I got 2 solid shots into him and Jung finished him off a few minutes later. Many a compliment was given to me about my aim in just about every round I played, and I just want to say thanks, it's what I do, and when are we going to come out with a "152 sniper scope with range-finder marksmanship medal"? Another thing I liked about today was the amount of chatter we had. It really helped win the day and made the game that much more enjoyable. With the use of push-to talk, we warned each other of danger, traded plans, complimented each other, and made witty remarks. For example: I was at Dead Gulch, just as the deployment phase was ending, and Jung, judging by his pessimism, thought I was trying to drop a cutter. My response? "Yes Jung, but that's what infantry are for." Just goes to show you what happens when 7 players manage to show up-the result is always a good time! One last thing-could someone ask Clay to update the replay server so we can see these awesome battles again?
