  1. Oh, yes, as much as I would like cavalry included I would not want any delay too... so maybe in a patch? (together with the non-random tech system )
  2. So, from what I gather we won't be able to have cavalry in the main campaign without sacrificing some other unit? Couldn't we have one empty unit slot? Especially that cavalry contrary to "special forces" discussed above was used on the corps level.
  3. 50 hours? Great! I've always found strategic games too short (with the notable exceptions of PI games), I have quite a few RPGs lasting more than 60 hours, why not strategies? After all it's just two weekends of non-stop play.
  4. They're doing a PC version? Great to hear! As for micro management, the more the better!
  5. What micromanagement? It's not that you have to count the losses yourself you know. I find it easier on the user to look at your manpower number than to check how many units of the said type can you build. Plus limits have one great disadvantage - they only count production not reinforcing units.
  6. Manpower is good enough. Soft limits force historicality, but that's it - they force it. SU could have only armour divisions if they wanted. It would have been silly beyond belief. But it was possible. If a player wants to use such a bad tactic I do not see the reason for forcing him. When he loses he'll use a better approach next time.
  7. 1st - all the games you've mention run, or can be run at the same resolution i.e. 1024x768 2nd - I've no idea what you mean, you can run let's say two applications at different screen resolutions, that will be switched when you alt-tab, still window mode is better at this. Nor do I understand why you talk about reboots, does your system freeze when switching res?
  8. I wouldn't be so sure. HOI2 allows, obviously, one to bomb convoys with bombers, but still if one wants to cut the supply lines subs are better for few reasons - planes are more influenced by weather, can be intercepted by enemy fighters, have lower range, and usually are needed for other more important tasks.
  9. I've no idea what you mean by "size" of the game... screen resolution? Anyway if ALT-TAB causes some problems for you, HOI, as most 2d games, can be run in a window.
  10. Well, it kind of has time periods. The smallest amount of time in which anything concerning movement/combat can occur is an hour, and as far as economy goes it's a day (ie 24 hours). The ability to pause and issue orders and different speed settings should negate all the problems. Actually the lack of turns is bad, but rather for the AI than the player
  11. Well, historically speaking, they shouldn't keep in the vicinity for fear of getting in the combat with KM while in range of their bombers.
  12. Does it? there are no turns in HOI. True 1939-45 as Germany takes me about 50% more than in SC2 but it is not that big difference.
  13. Now I begin to understand your previous posts. HOI is probably the only WW2 grand strategy that is close to the "war simulation". No other game encompasses so many aspects of the war - military, economic, diplomatic, weather, infrastructure, leaders, doctrines, government etc. You name it - HOI has got it. But yes it does require a certain amount of patience, planning and use of intellect, so those looking for a light-weight gaming won't like it obviously.
  14. Wow, you sure missed some great games. I'd recomend having a look at some of them to see how well hexes work in practice, esp. Steel Panthers, first because it's a great game, and second because it is nowdays a freeware!
  15. You may find it or not, but the easier encirclements with hexes are a fact, a hex is surrounded by 6 hexes a tile by 8 tiles. In a hex game of SC scale two corpses can encircle 1 on hexes but they cannot on tiles. I can think of plenty of WW2 situations that prove that 2:1 strength ratio should be enough, with tiles it isn't, you need at least 3:1.
  16. Hexes make encirclements easier, with squares there almost impossible, which is a bit ahistorical. [ June 27, 2007, 12:59 PM: Message edited by: borsook ]
  17. From your site Seems like it was providing about half the oil required. </font>
  18. I am sorry but this is bull****. Synthetic oil production was terribly ineffective and it far from providing the needed amounts (not to mention that before 1944 technology did not reach decent developement level). One of the aim of the Ardennes offensive in 1944 was capturing Allied oil depots so the offensive could continue. Another example IIRC more Koening Tiger tanks were abandoned and destoryed by the crews because of the lack of fuel than by Allied soldiers.
  19. This is something completely different, a lot of WW2 operation had aims directed by the need of oil, hell even Japan's attack at US was mostly oil related one. There were on the other hand no major operations in order to capture rubber.
  20. Yes, still I say compare it to SC1. SC series is one of my favourites but it did not change anything in terms of the genre. The reason why we should compare it to SC1 not patched-SC2 is that when you do the first game you have to write everything from scratch, in the sequel you can use large part of the old code and just add to it and improve it. I am sure that CEAW will be a different game after a few patches let alone expansion/sequel.
  21. It does exist in the context that Russia and USA oil fields each give 30mpps. Germany only has one. But no direct oil "points" to move troops. IMHO it would get into micromanaging which would start to bring SC2 into another category of war gaming. I prefer it as is. </font>
  22. @ DD - few points that need addressing - while I too think CEAW is too expensive it does not cost 60$ but 50$, see here http://www.slitherine.com/games/ceaw Also I doubt looking at past slithering projects that the expansion if there ever is one will cost more than 50% of that. Also, not to take any credit for Hubert, CEAW was made by 2 people as far as I know and it's their first game so we should compare it to SC1 not SC2 with patches. Anyway from what I read here and elsewhere the game could have been better, but still has some interesting elements that SC2 lacks (e.g. oil, non-random research) and I do remember Slitherine adding few campaigns for free (i.e. in a patch) to their Legion, so CEAW may get better in time at no cost.
  23. Is there a chance the expansion will add oil as the resource need by units to perform movement? In the current game situation one of the main problem of Germany simply does not exist.
