1. I loved the original Strategic Command because of its playability. I also got onboard a bit late, after the game had been patched a few times. When the SC2 demo was released, I downloaded it, but it didn't excite me the way I thought it would. I really didn't like the squares or the isometric map. And I wanted to wait until the game had been run through the wringer a few times so that the problems could be found and patched. So, what's the consensus now, two months (and one patch) on SC2? Am I missing out by not buying it yet?
2. Have updated DirectX and installed the latest driver for my Intel 82915G/GV910GL (and re-booted), but I still have the same problem. I'm not too concerned because, once I get the actual game, I'm sure I'll use the NATO symbols (3-D icons just don't do anything for me in a strategic-level wargame). Still, I hope that this problem doesn't affect any other part of the game, and I want Hubert to try to ID all of the bugs so that others don't face the same problems down the road.
3. My game runs fine. However, many of my unit icons don't show up using the 3D icon setting. The unit base is there, but all I can see are a couple of horizontal lines. This happened for all of my German Army units in western Germany; and sometimes it would happen to my naval units after they moved.
4. Front lines is not unrealistic, that is how the war was conducted. Germany had what 50-60 corps units attacking Soviet union? THey had continous fronts of course, problem here is that sc1 and sc2 simulate all those corps by having army sized units operating on a map in which armies only occupy one hex at the time.
5. SSI's "Tigers in the Snow" and AH's B-1 Bomber. It took a long time to load those games from my cassette drive.
6. Why? They were not strategically important. If you have POW camps, you might as well have battalions and companies and autobahns and elections and a myriad of other micro-manageable items. Strategic Command is a strategic game, and POW camps were not a strategic objective.
7. I comepletely agree with this part. I hated the end-game for the Germans, slowly and unrealistically building up a huge fleet of carriers and air fleets, and then invading Canada and the US. It was a waste of time, ahistorical, and just plain not fun.
8. Okay -- maybe it didn't read the hypo closely enough. This seems to solve the problem I saw: "...the column has moved one mile."
9. I don't know the right answer, but I sure know that answer is wrong. Take two extreme hypotheticals: 1) The messenger is traveling at the speed of light and the column is moving extremely slow; or 2) The messenger is traveling 1% faster than the column. It's clear that in either case the messenger won't travel 2.4 miles.
10. Does anyone else check this site every day just hoping to see news of a demo release?
11. I hope that the game is shipped with a great default campaign. I want to PLAY SC2, not design campaigns. I'm hoping to buy a complete game, not a system that I have to tweak and figure out and waste my own time getting it right. Hopefully HC isn't going to fall-back on the "use-the-editor" for every shortcoming in the game. He did a great job supporting and tweaking SC1, so I have faith he'll continue with SC2.
12. Blashy -- Good news, thanks. Night -- I disagree. With the Atlantic separating the United States and Germany, full-scale war could not have continued between the two countries. Neither side would have been able to prosecute full attacks against either: the US would not have a base in Europe, and Germany would not have had the seapower to project power into North America. Invading North America was never an option for Germany and would have been logistically impossible.
13. This has probably been discussed in here, but will the Axis victory conditions in SC II be a little more realistic? It always bugged me as completely unrealistic and a huge waste of time for the Germans to have to amass a large fleet and invade mainland America.
14. Vienna wasn't a capital during WWII. Austria was united (the Anschluss) into the Greater German Reich. Austria became a province and Berlin remained the capital of the Reich.
15. I love Strategic Command. But from the preview news release and the interview I read with Hubert Cater, I don't see anything to get too excited about. It looks to me like they've spruced up the game graphics (who cares how it looks?) but haven't done very much to the gameplay. I'm hoping for vastly-improved AI and more flexibility with the game options. I don't care very much about an expanded editor or camouflage uniforms that change if you're in North Africa (or Iraq). What have I missed?
