  1. Maybe make one.

During the italian campaign, a german airborn battalion took up position in an abandoned monastary that overlooked a key road the allies needed.

The americans spent several days trying to dislodge them, to no avail.

The british also joined the effort, and fed the meat grinder, for nothing.

A segregated, coloured, brigade was sent in, and briefly took the main gate before being forced back out.

And then a lost company of canadians stumbled into the staging area to ask directions.

The canadian comander offered to take the monastary by noon the next day, and told the american and british comanders to gather all the alcohol in the area to the main square.

That evening the canadians vanished and the americans laughed about the "scared" canuks.

But befor dawn they heard the sound of a battle raging in the monastary.

By 10:00 am, the fighting had stoped, and by 11:00 the canadians returned, escorting the captured survivors of the german garrison.

The canadian demand for alcohol was imediately met, and the canadians shared a drunken binge with their german captives.

I believe this to be a historical account,

  2. mav1,

the elphant is bmp #s 8640 through 8655

the winter elephant is 58640 through 58655

try copying the elephant bmps to a file,

add the "5" to each bmp, and start applying whites and greys, then copy the file back to the game, play test it to see whether it looks right, , if it doesnt, go back to the file and try another idea

  3. JasonC So the Panthers ( specialized medium to long range tank killers, for use in open country ) were pressed into use as general purpose tanks. And deployed at short to medium ranges in closed country?

-And the shermans were designed as general purpose tanks, who did best IN closed country at short to medium ranges.

-Alowing the shermans to decimate panther formations.

-And because shermans were as common as dirt, they would be abandoned by their crews, for as little as a broken fan belt, because allied formations could just requesition another whole sherman to replace it,

    - Hence the seemingly high loss rates for shermans

Please clarify that I'm actualy making sense here.

  4. There is no such thing as THE best tank of the war.

There are the best tankS of any particular class.

The sherman was one of the best general purpose tanks of the war, and remained a very good infantry support tank long after it became outclassed as an anti tank weapon.

Its a simple but ergonomical design that works.

The sherman shares its place with the T34 and the long PzIVs as being what a general purpose tank COULD be,

  5. mav1, no.

you would have to change each pixel individualy,

But honestly, a winter mod is not just a colour change, Infantry wore diferent uniforms in winter, and vehicles had whitewash applied as needed.

As to your being a "crap" artist, Take a few tokes and get creative, you may be surprised at how NOT crap you can be

  6. I dont like the M4 Sherman series myself, But only for asthetic reasons.

Other than being butt ugly, it was a fairly good tank.

Its greatest shortcomings were the same as any other tank of the period.

Someone seems to be assuming that the high loss rates it suffered were due to being a crappy tank, Guess again,,,,,,,,,

The sherman was the most common allied tank in the west, so of course its going to suffer the most losses.

But proportionaly it should suffer no more losses than the Cromwell or the M3 series.

The often desperate shortage of good crews meant that inadequatly trained crews were often sent out to fight, and this might account for high overall allied losses.

Combine this wih the fact that most allied tanks WERE M4 shermans,,,, and you have a high loss rate for shermans.

The fact is that the sherman is STILL a valid tank today, and is still deployed by many 3rd world countrys.

Are Shermans particularly bad tanks? No.

on average they are better than most allied tanks of the period,

Are shermans designed for stand up slugging matches with high velocity tank killers? No.

They are infantry support tanks that CAN be effectivly used in the AT role, WITH PROPER TACTICS.
