  1. The Germans R&D work was a perfect example of the military complex run mad. It was huge, highly compartmentalized and one group didn't know what the other was working on. Massive resources were poured into it with often dubious returns beyond making small groups wealthy. There is a study called amazingly "German Research in World War II" put together as the war closed and the US war over-running Germany. It reviews the status of their research. To sum it up, they're a good example of how not to do R&D. Jeff
  2. From "Roosevelt and the Russians: The Yalta Conference" by Edward R. Stettinius, Jr.
  3. The allies in the West were at the very end of their supply tether after the breakout in 1944. The only way (militarily) you can end the war earlier is by bringing the port of Antwerp into service, thus allowing further operations.
  4. Spain entering the war was a non-starter for a variety of reasons. In no particular order: Economically, Spain was a mess. She was not producing enough food and was getting food from ...you guessed it, the allies. The second that Spain attacked the allies, she would have lost her foreign possessions since she had no way to defend them. The Spanish only had enough oil/supplies for an extremely limited amount of time and then Germany would have had to provide the remaining supplies. A coup against the government was a real possibility if Spain went back to war. The country was in very poor shape and sending the troops out was hardly in the best interest of Franco. In any case the British were already sending a large amount of their supplies around Africa, so closing Gilbralter would hardly automatically cost Britian Africa.

  8. I want to applaud the designer of "Wolf". What an unbelievably fun scenario. We just finished up our game and I must say each movie left me on the edge of my seat sobbing, sometimes in joy and sometimes in anguish. What a ride it was! History will never forget my brave British pixels! iik

  20. Looks like I'm sitting around 55th and I'm happy as pie. I'm not sure how other replacements felt, but I found it difficult picking up somebody elses game in the middle. With the pressure to get things moving, my mind simply couldn't wrap itself around most of the scenarios until I started playing them for several turns or more. It's a big advantage to give up. This was particularly true of one scenario that I absolutely loathed the set-up the second I opened it. I saw a disaster in the making. Sure enough, Deadly88 layed a serious whooping on me that I'm still smarting from. I would like to thank Kingfish, Holien, SpanishBombs and anyone else responsible for putting on this ROW tournament. You can bet I'll be signed up for the next one! Finally a big thanks to my oppponents. They were a pleasure to play against - Brent, Strider, PittPanther, PantherCommander and Deadly88. iik
