Good Lord! What's with all the commas? Sorry, but I guess I'm just one of those people whom it bothers.

We all need to pray for the victims of this war from any side they come from.

I should like to mention that Mr. Beevor also stated how brutal the Soviets were in trying to bring the situation under control during a discussion I saw on CSPAN, I believe. He related how a German woman was desperate to save her companion from the drunken abuse of a Russian soldier and managed to find a Russian lieutenant. He followed her back to the place where her companion was and promptly shot the soldier in the head. Though, as others have stated, it was payback time.
  3. You know, it never ceases to amaze me how quickly we stray from the topic. Hmmm...my wife just shot me in the crotch with a rubber pellet pistol. Why did the kids get her that for Christmas? I hope everyone had a wonderful one. I own Will Fey's book and enjoyed the personal accounts, but it was not an objective work, as any engagement where the SS didn't shine or at least perform adequately is either ignored or barely mentioned. I only recently discovered that Kurt "Panzer" Meyer *gasp* surrendered! Tore off his SS runes, if I remember correctly. Fey and Kurowski failed to mention his fate and I had wondered about it.

    Sergei,

I can't remember that many hetrosexual scenes in Saving Private Ryan (great movie). The problem Hollywood has is that they try to go for that "formula" that will get everybody's interest, by doing so they create artificial situations in order to fit in some romance, or that tender moment, or that product promently displayed. When they do they lose their audiance, the ones they are so desperately aiming at, because it feels fake.

Compare "Saving Private Ryan" (or better yet "Band of Brothers") and "The Gates of Stalingrad" (or as I call it "Lust in the Rubble"). The one made millions and it's DVD is owned by millions, "Gates.." on the other hand is dead.

Kursk done the right way, don't tell the whole story, but tell enough so that the audiance feels the scope of it, could be a winner.

Unfortunately in the Robber Baron situation in Russia, it is unlikely to happen. To bad.

Who knows? If they could have the story revolve around one or two people, say, a German and a Russian tank commander, a film that would interest a wide audience could be feasible. Then again, will many people care about a clash between two basically evil empires? I would say, also, that the world was ready for a film like "Saving Private Ryan" after so much corn.
  5. Hmmm. I suppose Hollywood figured one movie and the bazillion books about the battle were enough.

My wife found out a couple of years ago that she has an uncle in Liege,Belgium(from some of her grandfather's escapades while in the ETO). As it turns out, he was very proud to learn that he had an American father and loves the US. He's also the president of a WWII/US Army veterans association, the name of which I can't remember just now. Apparently, many of its members were born of unions between American servicemen and Belgian women.

Now, here I am in England and I can't get over there for the anniversary. *&%^$#@! I guess I'll search for some photos of monuments.

Okay, perhaps that wasn't in the proper spirit of the topic.

Well...given the scenario you posit...George W. Bush would have decided on war against France (the weakest link) with the declared intent of 'putting an end to Vichy weapons programs aimed at WMDs', with the stated hope of 'breaking the stranglehold of terrorist regimes and introducing a Democratically Elected nation into Europe.'

Then he would have declined to use US troops to police the ongoing nightmare in the former Soviet Union.

Then he would have charged Britain another late fee on White Papers showing how much more they would have been able to suck up to the US if the US had entered the War before Hitler's victory.

Finally, Instead of bemusedly watching News Reports on Fidel holding on to power, despite anything approaching sanity, we'd be bemusedly watching yet another horrifying 'Three Tenors' special on PBS introduced by 'Il Duce'.

Oh, and 'Adolph' would still be a viable name for boy children in Europe and portions of America, like Ohio and the Southwest...

I agree with this statement, except I'd prefer Haile Selassie introducing "Three Mo' Tenors".

Whoops! Don't I feel sheepish. Sorry about the confusion. I found my book yesterday. Yay!
  8. Wow. This is really comforting. So many times, I pretend I was doing something else when the wife comes home, usually after me. "Uh, hey! I was just...doing laundry! The kids? They're...uhhh...playing in the yard! Yeah, that's it. Screaming? No, they're just having fun." Unfortunately, she knows what time is set for the screensaver and only has to look at the monitor, but this thread has given me some good ideas. I wish I had a son with whom I could share CM, though. *sniff*
