  1. Update on the semi-final in progress US forces are moving in on the Swedish capital, now defended primarly by Italians. Most likely Stockholm will be abandoned next turn. A series of intense air exchanges have occured over the past month, with each side losing two air fleets. The USA and Germany are both at L5 jets. The German pilots and HQs are undoubtebly more experienced, but the Allies have the all important cash advantage. In the USSR the Soviets are waging a war of attrition and probing for weaknesses. The Germans are fighting well and giving back as much as they take. Without air power a breakthrough is unlikely. USSR has AT4 and HT3. Axis air forces the HQs well back of the front lines. The front has been static for about a year. UK forces capture Sicily in a lightning strike. There is no sign of Axis resistance to Allied expansion in the med.
  2. Kossuth, this is true only if you are feeling suicidal. Technically, Allies always have the option to launch the gambit on turn 1, but if the Axis sent units to the West they will find a wonderful opportunity to drive over an undefended Maginot line! (Plus the attack on Brussells in turn 1 has a reasonable chance of failure without carrier support) I have only seen the gambit on turn 2, usually the Allies player sends in the carriers for support and loads the london corps into a transport in order to land in the city once the garrison is destroyed. But... if the Axis invades the LC on turn 2 this opportunity is lost. So the gambit has EVERYTHING to do with the german opening moves! FF
  3. I have wondered this myself. Experienced players will anticipate an invasion of the LC on turn 2 when playing another experienced player. In this case, is there a good chance they won't be prepared to launch the gambit! After all, those assets are useful either to make an early DOW on Ireland, or use the carriers to speed up the sub hunt... Comments from the top players welcome on this one...
  4. Hey Col Kurtz, welcome to the forum my 2c: Any HQ is much better than no HQ. And all HQs are equal for supply purposes.
  5. You can alway play the '42 scenario... USSR starts with HT2 and I think IT 2 also, and has a chance to compete in the air.
  6. Don't forget that advanced Armor units are make air units pay dearly for srikes. Russia can be very dangerous even without air power, provided she can protect the HQ units.
  7. Well, to be precise Allies have 370+286+190 MPP, Axis 490+110... But mom taught me not to rain on anyone's nice daydream!
  8. okay, I should be able to make 2 turns per day now
  9. Okay, how to simulate this: turn 4 click on War Map get your kid tell them to click all the buttons except DONE click DONE send the kid to Mom play on!
  10. Yeah, I had this problem. I couldn't sleep... so I got up and... PLAYED SC ALL NIGHT LONG AGAINST THE STUPID AI! (according to the computer it stayed up all night playing the stupid human) don't worry, I have been to therapy and I am okay now. FF
  11. That's why I play by email, no chance I can get a whole bunch of time in a row, let alone align it with somebody else! Why don't you guys at least start the game that way? update on the match with Dragon - Major air battles over Sweden. Axis has L5 jets, UK L4, USA L3. Most of the German air operates out of Finland, however one fleet left in Sweden is bombed and killed. - The USA army secures the mines and re-enforces. - Very light action in the USSR around Kharkov. - In the Med the UK recaptures Malta and takes Tripoli (both undefended) - Although things are going well for the Allies, the intellegence report shows that Germany has a huge numerical advantage in ground forces, this game has a ways to go! 12. You know Curry & Kurt, some kind of player rating system would be good for the PBEM league. Something like the seller rating thing on E-BAY. This would encourage players to finish out games instead of dropping out, if they know that it would affect their rating, and that in turn would affect their ability to find opponents... This would also motivate players to record losses! A simple text file managed by the league might suffice (I could admin that if you like) just a thought... 13. It's a trick! It's a trick! He has a huge force just waiting to crush the unsuspecting newbie! Don't believe it! It's his evil plan - lure them into thinking they have chance, then stomp them! (we got stomped once in the LC you know!) I know he has L4 heavy tanks hiding outside my scouting range in the USSR! (um, that would be all of two hexes since the Russian's don't know how to fly...) 14. silence is on it's way... if anyone who manages a SC site wants this mod drop me a line...
  15. the allies are gaining ground in the past few turns... The Americans have liberated Norway and are pushing towards Stockholm. A line of corps defends the mines but they are outnumbered and outgunned by the US ground forces. The Germans fly in air units for the defense. It looks like a showdown in Sweden! A US corps manages to sneak into an undefended Copenhagen, the Danes party long into the night. In the USSR everything is dead quiet except for a few Axis air raids (just training, or warming up for another offensive?). Soviet commanders urge the front line batallions to remain vigilant. In the Med, the UK fleet, having recently dispached the last of the Italian navy, trains against Greece. Tobruk to Bagdad is now commonwealth territory. Over the past several turns there have been some air battles over France as the RAF tests the defenses.
  16. A great classic game, have fun with it Liam. I recall it is AI only, no multiplayer, too bad.
  17. Or when the boss ambushes you! About the recording idea - I have a tool that might do this... It is used for software training and can record the display to a file... Lemme try it. It's not freeware, but there might be something equivalent in the public domain... But if it works, then somebody can send me a file (with password), I could play it, make the video file, and then post it somewhere for all of you dudes... no promises, let me check it out.
  18. You know, I have a tool that might do this... It is used for software training and can record the display to a file... Lemme try it. It's not freeware, but there might be something equivalent in the public domain...
  19. Of course it is all random. I realize I am just seeing a few fluky games. You want to make it HARDER for Soviets to get tech? I don't get this at all. In the world of SC, you have the ability to dictate grand strategy. If you want to try and compete with tech instead of numerical superiority as Russians, why not? Why do you want to take this away? On another point, I'm sure this has been discussed before, but wouldn't it be nice (reasonable historically) if the UK and USA had some ability to share tech? I bet that would drive down those bids!
  20. rant I have a theory that soviet scientists in SC like chess. And vodka. they do not like working. just my pet theory, it may be different in your universe... (one, just one example, 1944, 8 research points, one stinky tech advance) okay another example 1943, 7 research points, no $#@$% tech advances /rant
  21. Nice idea Les. I have played or am playing Iron Ranger, Dragonheart, Xwormwood, Rannug & Curry, Terif, recommend all. Curry responds with moves very fast. Iron and Terif are veteran players willing to coach a bit. I'm having a great game with Kurt88 (faster turns dude!) also. I'm playing a guy named David who is signed up on the PBEM league and although new to the forum he is a good player.
  22. please amend the statement above to "Friendly Fire idiotically wanted to play the Allies" update: It's all out war in the East centered around Kharkov. Axis take out an armored division, an army and a corps unit, the counterattack takes out an Axis armor and 2 corps... Axis enjoys strong air support with six L4 jets based in Russia. (I'm not sure what Dragon means by saying he has to defend, it sure looks like an offensive!) Allies take Tobruk and raid Greece. Port of Olso wrecked by American bombers stationed near Brest, with support from British carrier group. UK navy supported by the RAF attacks German ship in the Brussels port, destroying it. One German air intercepts. [ March 05, 2004, 09:01 PM: Message edited by: Friendly Fire ]
  23. He reiver, if you want a friendly game with an intermediate player let me know, I'm based in Canada.
  24. It doesn't seem to be a problem with Battlefront games... There was a looong thread in the CMAK forum on this topic, I looked for it but it might have been moved to an archive. At any rate, the gist of it was that almost nobody reported paying duty (shhh, don't tell the tax guys!)
