  1. i have been away from TOW for a year or so but bought it as soon as it came out. it installed and played fine [tho i found issues that put me off playing till a patch came out] and was uninstalled. yesterday i dl'd the uber patch. installed TOW, licensed the key. everything fine. didn't start game just installed uber patch and game wouldn't run. can't rem error report so i'll go thru process again and edit this post later [my HDD is due for format, i still have my old amd3200, 1gb ram, 7600GS geforce and 160 gb hdd]. i should say other games [older ones obv] install and play fine [cal of dutyMW, hitman blood money, CMAK, dawn of war/WA]. reg is cleaned regularly w ccleaner and easycleaner, defragged weekly. thanks
  2. is the armour balanced for gameplay? say... a tiger down statted to make it possible for shermans to destroy it from certain ranges and above? i kinda hope historical accuracy isn't compromised in this. it is interesting to pit 12 shermans vs 3-5 tigers and see if you can beat the odds. but if they're 'game balanced' then it kinda ruins it for me. i think i read somewhere that in veteran mode historical accuracy is kept. is this true? thanks
  3. it's a shame the tanks are so omnipotent. it ruined my interest in this game and reading this thread has just reminded me how annoying it was. so much for combined arms.
  4. just wondering whether there are any new maps or campaigns yet? CM games usualy have loads so was kinda hoping there woud be some fo this game. thanks
  5. any links to west front /normandy scenarios?
  6. any links to west front /normandy scenarios?
  7. i'm of the same opinion. but iam told, quite forcefully, that there WAS a pegasus brigade, and that the para webpage confirms this. i'm beginning to think my mate is a psycho. ex army, at least, he says he is? he says only the paras themselves called themselves this. in WW2 and renamed again in mid 1980s. i have read Maj.Gen.Urquhart's story of arnhem and nowhere does it mention the arnhem bridge was captured by the pegasus brigade [this was how the whole arguement started, whilst watching 'bridge too far']. i know it was Frost's Battalion that took the north end of the bridge, so it wasn't a brigade but a battalion. thanks das
  8. i understand members of a unit of the 1st Brit AB div had Pegasus arm badges. was this unit known as the 'Pegasus Brigade'? a friend of mine is convinced it is tho i believe he may be getting this mixed up with the pegasus op for the orne bridgehead on 6th june '44. it's just that i've never heard of this unit before and all my searches have come up blank. any help would be appreciated. das
  9. sorry bout this. i've been getting PHP errors reported whenever i try to reply or start a topic but whatever caused it is obviously no longer affecting my system. phew!
  10. ive been playing multiplayer CMAK games with a mate online TCP/IP. works fine. tried CMBB and cannot connect. now, what i think i happening is he or i may have used US patches for our CDV games [we're both from UK]. butit is difficult to figure out. i've got the US version of 1.02 patch and so i know at least i have installed 1.02 of the euro CDV patch. i downloaded the US 1.02 just to compare with euro version. but can't find the US 1.01 or 1.03 US patches just to confirm to myself that i don't have them installed. i also think possibly my friend has updated his CMBB with US patches. that might explain why we can't connect with this game. any help about confirming US/euro patches game would be appreciated! thanks das
  11. i'm not too sure how i could be of help as i've avoided creating scens/ops since i did some for CMBO and found that it took something away from the game and i lost interest until CMBB's release. atm, mate, i'm introducing a coupla friends to the magic of CMAK. never really got into the MPlyr side of CM apart from a few scenarios but am finding i do enjoy it a lot now [poss something to do with 56k modem's and dodgy connections a few years ago?]. certainly i'd be quite happy to playtest it, mplyr and/or singleplyr. am in the process of moving flats atm so poss i cannot give it as much attention as i normally could [finding a flat that lets me use NTL's broadband is getting to be a pain... i refuse to use BT] but certainly i don't mind helping out any way i can. email is about to change soon so gimme a few days. das
  12. oh yeh.... er... well, it was early hours in the am for me<that's my excuse and i'm sticking to it!also, i trawled thru the index and found nothing with cassino in it! note to self:sometimes site-search engines do actually WORK] apologies to mr warwick
  13. is there? i cannot find it if there is.
  14. isn't this where i get bombarded by requests to go back to playing C&C and so called 'real time strategy' games? i played C&C in 1996 and never bothered after that as every other C&C clone that followed was just the first one with nicer grfx, ie, poo. das
  15. let's hope the next CM will have use of the mousewheel and a user friendly interface. having to click to change height or slowly turn the view by putting the cursor to the edge of the screen in this day and age is silly.ok, there are keyboard shortcuts but i much prefer the mouse... why shouldn't some of us have the option to use the mousewheel to move up or down? it's not asking too much, is it? would it really be making CM 'too gamey' just to make it more mouse[user] friendly? das
  16. i played that scenario. i thought it was great. i played the allies and didn't do too well but the point was it was fun to try it, to see if i could get a better result than the allies did in history. i mean, isn't that the point of historical scenarios? ok, it was depressing in that a helluva lot of ppl died on the allied side from so many nations but... well, isn't that war? this is a WAR sim. lots of ppl from different nations died in stalingrad[weren't there roumanians, hungarians, italians as well as the germans there?] but because they were the aggressors it is not so depressing? of course, war is depressing but this is a war 'game' [i know the purists will bang on about it being a simulation of WW2 but to me this IS a game - and just why the interface is so fiddly STILL is annoying but i won't go there]. i especially enjoy historical scenarios/ops as, i'm guessing, a lot of others do. in fact, i much prefer historical scens. CMAK is a great game. Cassino was a 'great' battle and to replay this would be great. i cannot see how it would be any more complex, disturbing, terrifying, difficult or just plain boring than any other battle. i just find it very puzzling that such an important 'event' as Cassino was avoided. am i being bloodthirsty for wanting to play Cassino scenarios? because i don't feel i am any more than when i played scenarios connected to the Kursk, Berlin, Stalingrad, El Alamein, Tobruk etc etc etc battles. i've never designed a scenario for any CM game as i much prefer to be a player and i don't want to spoil the magic of 'playing' the game by discovering just how they are made. i would've thought Cassino had the perfect setting for CM scenarios? but what do i know? i just play the game. thanks to all scen/op designers anyway for giving me and friends hours upon hours of entertaining gameplay. das
  17. i know there are fewer battles/ops in CMAK than in CMBB but surely Monte Cassino's are a must? i bought CMAK for 2 reasons... Crete and Cassino. i got lots of Crete missions but i can't seem to find Cassino missions. anyone know of any anywhere? i checked at the usual places CMHQ and a few others i can't recall but didn't find anything Cassino related. i mean... Cassino!!!! it was a dreaded battle that was fought for tooth and nail, a real slogger, but somehow BFC never bothered writing battles or ops for it? how could this be? the guys that fought for cassino were called D-Day dodgers and we all know about utah and omaha and saving private ryan... ok, it wasn't on the same grand strategic scale as D-Day but it was an epic battle... and yet i can't find it anywhere? please someone point me in the direction of cassino missions/ops. thank you das
  18. i hope so. i cannopt find any cassino missions and the only reason i got CMAK was for cassino and crete. crete is great but no cassino missions!!!
  19. i would love to have a conversion for CMAK to western front. the italy theatre isn't that interesting to me but i loveed CMBO but don't play it as it's just too poo compared to CMAK and CMBB
  20. about 200 volksturm boys and assorted wehrmacht personnel given a ****load of tellermines and Pzfausts and expected to hold a bridge in '45 from a soviet tank corps. they ran alongside these russian tanks doing their work, blowing tracks and often killing themselves in the process. about 20 finally managed to get away after destroying/immobilising scores of russian tanks around the bridge. eastern germany, i don't recall the location but i did read about it. these guys decided to hold off the soviets knowing that if they just left - which they easily could have - then the refugees making their way west would not have made it. i believe because of the losses, the russians believed the forces at the bridge were far larger than they actually were and so halted until infantry arrived to support them. sorry can't recall places etc but i suppose events like this occurred all thru the war from 1939 to 1945... justv another unknown soldier's tale with very few witnesses to verify it. perhaps it was just a tale?
  21. yup. with u there. the battles thru the bocage and then the breakout up to bulge. italy is ok... but i find i am only really interested in cassino and anzio, for some reason. afrika is ok-ish but the terrain features [-less] leave me wanting to play west front battles. Krete battles are great. i am disappointed by the absence of cassino missions in CMAK. i've had a look around and can find nothing. i would have thought cassino would be one of the most used battles for scenarios/ops? das
  22. i really enjoyed CMBO but it has been surpassed by CMBB and CMAK. the last two being much better games. but i would love to play normandy, BotB western front battles using the updated CM engine. are these mods for such a thing? BotB had nothign to do with the era/area of CMAK. das
  23. i think i was quite lucky in the Fruhlingswind demo. after a terrible start on my part, due to my not studying the terrain closely, i lost 2 PSWs in the centre of the ridge, with a 3rd KO'd by the Grant's Xfire - tho it did manage to cause the temple based half track to abandon before going up - and all 3 SPW/10s being torn to shreds at the <my> far right ridgeline [i just didn't realise how easily the allies could see my vehicles]. i arty'd the 2nd halftrack which i guessed left me with the 3 Grants and a AT gun at the temple wall. arty'd that, too, by the time i had positioned all 15 PzIIIs behind the ridgeline. i used mortar stonk to take out the AT gun placed with the GIs on my right [it was well hidden until i got my recon troops forward enough to spot it.. but they had been slaughtered for this prize... only the plt HQ <hiding in the brush> got away with only one casualty]. so, with my PzIIIs ready for the off, & with at least 2 ATs and 2 75mm halftracks out of the way i figured 3 Grants should be easy. i think this was turn 11 or 12, maybe later than that? but the last PzIII plt took 3 mins getting into position [ i was being cautious after losing 6 vehicles to misjudging the terrain]. meanwhile, i used the central ravine to get a plt within 100m of the temple walls. i figured if there were any more ATs hidden then a quick charge closer might expose them but my 105s had done a good job of wasting one at least. i sent that isolated recon platoon to sacrifice itself so that the armour would at least know of any more threats [ at this time i still believed there were only 3 Grants!] i ordered the 3 Pz plts to go hulldown from left to centre ridge all at once... with 15 x 50mm L60 cannons roaring from hd positions they should easily deal with only 3 Grants, however tough they're supposed to be. but within a minute one PzIII had hardly got a shot off when the crew bailed after taking multiple hits. not so good. and what was worse there was def more than 3 AFVs. i could see 2 Grants and another that could've been a grant or a sherman AND an AFV icon. oh shee-ite... not good. the only good news was that the minor inf charge toward the temple wall drew some of the Grants' fire for a short time and showed me that there wasn't another AT gun behind that wall. i could see that one of the Grants was green. also good. going on a bit here... to sum up, using all 15 Pz was a good idea. they KO'd one, and caused the other 3 to bail [i believe the 5th vehicle retreated off-map when the reg HQ grant was KO'd]. i lost a 2nd Pz to the HQ grant but this was blasted apart by a Pz i shot forward to get it within 100 m [those 50mm shells were bouncing off! making the crews panic was the best i could do because my Pz really did pound them to no effect]. the same happened with the shermans that appeared from the road behind the wadi. but again such a mass of firepower, however weak the calibre at that range, caused a green sherman crew to bail out. used fire and movement to get 5 Pz [now low on AP rounds] to move in and waste the inf defenders at the VL flag left and panicked the 2 shermans with fire on their flanks from my Pz left of the temple wall. the remaining 2 shermans hiding in the cover of the orchard/trees eventually surrendered giving me a major victory. but i believe i was incredibly lucky to only lose 2 Pzs to the Grants and with one of them retreating offmap. the early loss of the Grants meant i could keep the shermansfrom deploying and keep them under fire from along the ridgeline AND from their right. lost a lot of infantry but it was a tactical use that allowed my tanks to get the range of the grants before they had to manouvre to get the 75mm's limited traverse in the right direction. damn good demo. as was the Line of Defence. played the AI. thoroughly enjoyed it. thanks das
