  1. > Is the Uncommon Valor Pacific the same as "War in the Pacific"? Same idea, but it's only on a restricted region, around the Solomon Is/New Guinea area.
  2. -is it a game function or a bug when rocket detachments can't be turned into transport-ship? Game function. You can't do this in SP either. -is it a game function or a bug when an axis airfleet intercepts an allied bombing run when it is the very target of this bombing run? Game function. In the real world it's called "scrambling".
  3. Historically the post-liberation FF were equipped by the US so their MPPs should come out of the USA pool.
  4. I see what you mean, I could have disbanded some of the corps inside the hedgehog and built armies there instead. I would sacrifice their experience and entrenchment of course. But in any case I believe there was no chance of a breakout succeeding. It is now moot as Moscow has fallen. Now I have the same situation elsewhere; I can build in the urals but not the causasus. Fortunately the south is pretty robust for the time being and I was able to spend all those accumulated MMPs building new armies and an HQ in the Urals. He'll take it eventually but it will be tough.
  5. I have a situation in my currect game that I suspect is WaD, but seems unrealistic to me. The Germans are creaming me in Russia and I ended up forming a hedgehog around Moscow - HQ in the city and 6 corps around it - while the rest of my units retreated to the urals and caucasus mountains. To my horror I find I cannot place any new units while Moscow is cut off from the rest if the USSR. Not armies, ships, planes, nothing. If I make a 1-hex wide connection into the Moscow pocket I can build as normal, but that is no longer possible. Consequently I am building up a huge bank of unused MMPs. All I can spend them on is repairing existing units. What do people think of this situation?
  6. I'm part way through my second PBEM game, so I've seen this screen over 100 times and never had this problem. It is almost certainly to do with winME or the video drivers. Check for updates for both. I'm not sure if SC uses directX, but try running dxdiag and see if any errors show in any screen there.
  7. You don't need manpower units or escalating expenses for new units. All you need to do is charge maintenance for existing units; the bigger the army the more it costs. The problem fixes itself. Something like 1/corps, 2/army or cruiser, 3/battleship, HQ or airunit would be a good start.
  8. I'm not sure I agree with your numbers. In the battle of Britian ME109s based on the Channel coast of France could get to London, have maybe 10-20 minutes of combat then had to go home. I don't have the game in front of me so I can't express that in hexes but it's a lot less than 8, I think about 4 from memory.
  9. I don't think tactical air units should be able to attack ground forces at all, in the scale of this game. They should automatically assist in ground combats within their range (similar to the automatic intercepts that happen now), that is all they should be able to do. Same with naval shore bombardment - it should only assist ground combats not be an independent action. That resolves the silly results got with entire armies being wiped out by a cruiser and a Luftflotte. Direct ground attack could be done with strategic air units (eg the carpet bombings that happened in Normandy) thus restoring some use for them. Also they should take FAR less damage when they bomb undefended targets, as it is now it costs more MPPs to bomb undefended ports and factories than you cost the enemy. I then think rockets should be dropped and replaced with artillery corps, and they should only ever get a range of 2. Art would turn into tactical rockets (Katyushkas) at Tech 4, say.
  10. You run your transports up to next to the empty coastal hex you want to land them on. The next turn, you right-click on them and choose the Unload option. Once you conquer a port you can land them in the port without waiting til the next turn, and they can more one more hex also. [ February 28, 2003, 05:28 AM: Message edited by: AndrewT ]
  11. >Is there any way to skip the introductory screen (with the leader faces) and the accompanying music? A mouse click does it, and I think the ESC key. >Secondly, we are playing without the War in Siberia optional rule but it is March 1942 and no reinforcements from the far east have shown up. Are these reinforcements triggered by German proximity to Moscow? Yes, 3 hexes I believe. >Just a comment. As the Allies, I invaded Ireland but afterwards noticed that there is no port so the only way I can get my invading unit off the island is by disbanding it! Correct. Not much can be done about this. I mean consider that the whole of Spain has only one port!
  12. If you had read the 'TCPIP Quick How To.txt' file that comes in the current patch, you would have seen: Firewalls and Proxies: In order to play a network game, Strategic Command requires that TCP port 6530 be open for all outgoing and incoming transmissions. Please configure your firewall and proxies accordingly.
  13. Bullwinkle, playing 1-on-1 by the Internet or on a local Lan is easy, it is no different to playing against the AI in terms of how the gameturn runs. People make much better opponents. See the 'TCPIP Quick How To.txt' file that comes in the current patch. [ January 18, 2003, 12:46 AM: Message edited by: AndrewT ]
  14. Hardly a tech support Q, but ... go to the other SC forum here and post your desire for a game! There is no central host server, you have to make your own connections.
  15. Only by editing the screen shot graphical image and adding it in. Should be simple to do.
  16. I think the problem is the high MPPs available to the Axis, not low MPPs available to the Allies. The rewards for conquering tiny countries like Denmark are hugely excessive. There is no cost of occupation, or even a need to garrison any country (except Yugoslavia). The immediate reward for conquering a country need to be reduced by a lot, say 90%, and the conquering power should get only 1/2 value out of a city, mine or oilwell from then on unless it is garrisonned.
  17. OE 6 by default now says this for all attachments. This is an OE issue and nothing to do with SC as such. In OE go to Tools - Options and click on the Security tab. Uncheck the box "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus". Click on the OK button and you're done.
  18. As you are using some sort of customised graphics I doubt there's much Hubert can do for you.
  19. Grobdeutschland, I'd post your strategy Qs in the main SC forum, not here in tech support. As for the lockup issue, if you've read the other threads on it and they don't help, then I'd suggest starting your own fresh thread here. When I moved my machine from Win98se to win2000 about 12 months ago, Europa Universalis 2 ran much better for me, and pretty much stopped crashing too.
  20. The downside is that you should not attempt an inplace upgrade. Nuke everything by creating a new NTFS partition during the install. This means you have to write a list of everything you have installed currently and confirm you know how to reinstall it afterwards. Things like Outlook Express emails and OE favourites can be preserved if you know how.
  21. FWIW I nuked WinME on my wife's laptop last weekend and went for win2k. I just got sick of all the problems that stupid OS caused us. WinME is probably the worst of the Windows OSs and win2k the best, IMO.
  22. I thought of that, but you said it was OK on the other computer ... ? Did you change the way you did things between PCs or something?
  23. I don't believe there are any sort of agreed standards for solo play. Personally I play FoW and 0 exp bonus and random neutral entry. The reason you won't find it in the stores is, I believe, because it is only available online.
  24. I would say neither of these groups had an effect at the scale of the game. The smallest unit is a corps which is usually 30,000 - 100,000 men. The French resistance is largely a post-war myth until June 7th 1944.
  25. Odd one. Assuming this machine has a fairly normal mouse, it sounds like it thinks there's a shift, ctl or alt key held down. Can you swap in the mouse and keyboard from another machine, as a test?
