  1. Well, I've got a lot of crappy work to do in my office and it's been a looong time since I've run CMAK, so this is perfect for me. Run a turn, let it sim (do work) and come do my turn (fun) ! At any rate, I'd rather not spend 10,000 hours looking through mods on the excellent mod site, but would like to know from the epxerts here if there are some all-inclusive mods I should check out, or at least what's on eveyrone's "must have" mod list.
  2. See here to whet your appetite for the hex-tile discussion. Make sure to pack a lunch. http://www.battlefront.com/cgi-bin/bbs/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=34;t=000050
  3. Well I guess that's a pretty good point Seamonkey. Looking at WWII sans Nazis is no longer WWII, but maybe WWI revisited with better technology...
  4. I don't think all the "what if's" were superfluous. The Germans did successfully garner some support from people who viewed them as liberators. Stalin had already started killing and imprisoning lots of people, and I bet many would have viewed the Germans as the lesser of 2 evils - had they not had such a torturous reputation for killing anything as fast as Stalin. The people that populate "Russia" prime however are very nationalistic even now through 80 years of oppression - so I think that most classes of the "Soviet Union" wanted out of Stalin's regime, except the true Russian people themselves. My curiosity is thinking of a scenario (for SC2), where a more refined goal for Germany where they don't go after cities that bother them because of the name will lead to total victory? I'm still wondering the following: Do you know where the factories were located that churned out the majority of the IL-2 Sturmoviks, T-34's, KV-1's and the IS 1-2's?
  5. So had they started a month earlier and been 300 miles further when the torential rains hit - would the outcome have been the same? Being further into Soviet territory and then cut in half by washed out roads and raging rivers?
  6. You've GOT to be kidding?!?! Hasbro tried to copyright hexes/center dot? Disgusting...
  7. If the German's stopped after taking Moscow, Leningrad etc... let's say "they're supply lines ran tight", do you think that still would have spelled the end of Russia? Do you know where the factories were located that churned out the majority of the IL-2 Sturmoviks, T-34's, KV-1's and the IS 1-2's? It seems Russia could mobilize anyone from anywhere, skilled or not... and if these factories were not destroyed... EVEN if Germany secured Leningrad and Moscow... without Germany taking those factories which were pumping out 1,000's of units a month... it seems Russia would still have had plenty of fight left in her. Or not?
  8. Have any of you given much thought to the rumour that Hitler actually started Operation Barborossa 30-60 days later than he'd planned because he was enraged at the problems in Yugoslavia? Apparently he diverted forces that were originally intended for the Eastern offensive to crush the anti-German rebellions in the Balkans. This 1-2 months delay helped set Germany up for an awful attack by Mother nature... I'm curious though, if Hitler HAD started Operation Barborossa 1-2 months earlier - would they have successfully decimated Russia's remaining vital cities and resources? Or, was it inevitable Germany would have lost the Eastern front no matter what weather had befallen them? Personally, I tend to think that no one could "truly" conquer Russia with it being so "wide" and spread out, the supply line issue would ruin any invading army...
  9. It's the documentary of the Hex vs. Tile vs. Octagon vs. Decagon based wargame system. Seriously, there's enough text in the (Tile vs. Hex) thread to fill most Hollywood Biographies. It's amazing (quite interesting too) how personally AND emotionally many people can take to an issue like that. But it bodes well for how beloved Strategic Command is to those that write here. You'd never see that kind of zeal for a game like "Extreme Paintbrawl" Ok, that does it for the japinard comedy hour. You can stop your booing now! <<EDIT>> thought the SC2 forum could use ONE light-hearted post
  10. I like the idea of being able to view stats during your wait time. That or plug into the Food Network's "Iron Chef" for crazy cooking ideas. [ April 28, 2004, 02:29 AM: Message edited by: japinard ]
  11. I can't speak for the developer's, but my guess is: Time and Resources. I'm sure this will be very historically accurate sim for units, placement, numbers, etc. To expand it to the world would delay the release for quite a long time I bet. And personally I'd like to get it this year, rather than a year from now. We can always get mods and maybe an expansion pack later on!
  12. I think this idea is hitting a level of complexity that may the inumerous "fun factor". However, making it so aircraft cannot land in newly aquired tiles would be good. However there are ALWAYS exceptions...
  13. Very interesting. This would seem to increase the capabilites for counter-attacking and create a much more realistic penalty for being caught in a "bulge" unless a true breakthru created. Hmmm, lots of new strategies to think about...
  14. If the pieces are just bmp's or a sheet, or should be a lot of fun in the modding arena
  15. Just from the short tidbits of information here, it looks like this isn't just a single "game", nor a sim of just "WWII", but to me kind of reminds me of the the "War Engine". Not as complex as that, but definately way more manageable to make something great and identifiable. I think that WWI deep trench warfare could be extremely fun with this engine...
  16. I add my name to the list as well. Except I'll pre-buy TWO copies of the game! And I have an enourmous amount of time I can sink into it
  17. There'e no dancing smiley leprechaun icon here, so just imagine. It's funny, I think you all are just in shock since the SC@ screenies look SOOOO different than you thought - but I trust Hubert. He knows what he's doing, and I TOTALLY agree on the price-point many of you have brought up. I sure hope they charge a decent fee for it this time. $25 was way too cheap, and matrixgames are now charging ridiculous fees for some of their games that I think suck (that I stupidly bought). SC is my favorite hex-based wargame of all time. [ April 13, 2004, 11:14 PM: Message edited by: japinard ]
