  1. Avatar - All things being equal do you think the Low Countries would have been Allied or Axis?
  2. JerseyJohn - did they give you the "there's sicker peple than you, so you must be discharged"? or did they really make you leave because your healthcare had run out? That's entirely frightening if so. I have CF, and if I was in the hospital and my healthcare ran out... I'd end up dying. I hate the healthcare system in this country.
  3. Avatar - your post was immensly helpful and informative. I had Portugal on the Axis side, and Denmark on the Allied side. Somethihg interesting I found out while doing this research was the Netherlands had the highest % of citizens per capita that volunteered for the SS. There were (up to ) 50,000 Dutch who entered that group. http://members.shaw.ca/grossdeutschland/players.htm Was Anne Frank shuttered up in the Netherlands? If so, I now understand why with a huige amount of that population pro-Axis.
  4. So was Sweden in the USSR's "sights" thus the initial reason for the Estonian/Swedish/Finnish alliance? If not, was Sweden more like Swizerland in profiting somewhat from German wartime needs? Alfatwosix - I'm enjoying this thread too So fun to learn new things from old history. [ January 22, 2004, 03:32 AM: Message edited by: japinard ]
  5. Overall Average alignment (Primarily post-1940): Canada - Allies Finland - Axis Hungary - Axis Ireland - Allies Belgium - Allies Netherlands - Allies Poland - Allies Romania - Axis Baltic States - Allied Bulgaria - Axis Denmark - Allied Greece - Allied Hungary - Axis Norway - Allied Iraq - Allied Portugal - Axis Romania - Axis Sweden - Axis Yugoslavia - Allied Spain - Axis Switzerland - Axis Turkey - Axis USSR - Allied
  6. OK here's my new alignment. Pre-1940 Canada - Allies Finland - Allies Hungary - Axis Ireland - Allies Belgium - Allies Netherlands - Allies Poland - Allies Romania - Axis Baltic States - Allied Bulgaria - Axis Denmark - Allied Greece - Allied Hungary - Axis Norway - Allied Iraq - Allied Portugal - Axis Romania - Axis Sweden - Axis Yugoslavia - Allied Spain - Axis Switzerland - Axis Turkey - Axis USSR - Axis (gulp) [ January 22, 2004, 03:16 AM: Message edited by: japinard ]
  7. Sergei -that map is kind of difficult to read. Does that show the Finnish army on the steps of Leningrad?
  8. Emrys - Turkey did end up kind of siding with with NATO though didn't they? After all we had Nuclear Missles there until the 1960's.
  9. Well, now I have to do 2 versions Version 1 will be 1939 tendancies based on a German-Russian alliance. (SCARY) And Version 2 will be more historical based on overall war effort 1939-1944. So tehnically if we looked at a Russo-German allaince (I kionw that's far-fetched cause Nazi's abhored Stalin and communism) - but this would have put the remaing Slavic, Baltic, Eatern European, Scandinavian, and Low Countries at odds with this type of "Axis of Evil". hehe.
  10. But Tero... the Act made Finland "absorbable" by both the USSR AND Germany. In early 1940 though the USSR was technically a neutral/Axis power. The only known treaties were with Germany with their non-aggression pact. Britian and the US certinaly did not have a non-aggression pact with the USSR. SO wouldn't this make the USSR... Hmm I think I just proved your point
  11. Emrys - you recall how long that Authoritarian rule lasted in Portugal? Seems like they were like that for several decades thereafter. So if the Axis had been clearly winning in 1944 - think they would have thrown their hat in with the Axis?
  12. AEB - wasn't Norway the victim of a quick German invasion/takeover?
  13. Hehe "Marmon-Harrington" The interesting thing I'm coming to realize here(beyond my previous understanding of WWII history) is many countries would not have supported Germany as actively (or at all) if they hadn't hated/feared the USSR communist effort so much. If the USSR had remained an Axis "neutral" maybe British and American soldiers would have been fighting alongside Romanians, Hungarians, and Finns...
  14. I'ev got 2 more to decide on: Portugal and Yugoslavia. Right now I'm leaning on Portugal pro-Axis and Yuogslavia pro-Allied. Although I realize Yugoslavia contains 2 opposing and polarized constituents.
  15. Dorosh - why would the Chinese have PAK 40's? Captured guns - or was part of the Chinese country Axis affiliated? Seems strange since their arch-nemesis was Japan...
  16. Hehe, I think I missed Danish History 101 They were annexed I presume?
  17. Dorosh I missed that, but would love to read it. Can you post a link to it for me? Emrys - I totally undertstand they wanted to be left alone and didn't want to take a sides. Heck, much of the U.S. didn't want to take sides until we were forced to by the Japanese. But I'm looking at how the neutral countries prospered by supporting one slightly more than another. Once again, though the Swiss cried neutrality, they profited immenseley by laundering stolen German gold. So once again, it's just "what-if's" and fictional with a historical slant.
  18. I know Denmark and Portugal were neutral. But what side do you think they may have leaned towards if FORCED to make a choice? Totally subjective of course - no right or wrong here.
  19. OK here's a tough question. If Germany had not attacked Russia - do you think Russia would have been an Allied partner? Denmark - I'm going to guess they would have had Allied inclination after seeing their colleages overrun (Netherlands & Belgium)? Sheesh - just read that site. The Netherlands had more SS volunteers than any other non-German country?!    Am I reading that correctly?! [ January 22, 2004, 01:11 AM: Message edited by: japinard ]
  20. Michael Dorosh - that's the plan. Can you give me some historical advice? I realize there's 2 schools of thought on many of these countries. People's support vs. actual government stance, but I think I'm leaning towards the government stance. For instance Switzerland claimed neutrality, but they obviously greatly aided the Axis. Spanish people may have hated the Axis, but still the Spanish government supported Germany.
  21. I'm working on a scenario and need to know of the following countries in 1939/1940... Did they lean more towards supporting the Axis or the Allies? (actually kind of looking at their support stance during the entire war too). Baltic States Bulgaria Denmark Greece Hungary Norway Iraq Portugal Romania Sweden Yugoslavia I've already determined the following (non-superpowers): Canada - Allies Finland - Axis Hungary - Axis Ireland - Allies Belgium - Allies Netherlands - Allies Poland - Allies Romania - Axis Spain - Axis Switzerland - Axis Turkey - Axis Note: I Know many of these were neutral, but I'm loking at their helpful tendancies (like Switzerland helping the Germans more than the Allies even though neutral). Thanks for the help!
