  1. I am also considering streaming the creation of a scenario for the next title...

Chris although I have been using the Editor and designing scenarios for my own use since CMSF, I would be very interested in watching you design a scenario using the latest features in the Editor.

  2. Thank you for the detailed explanation of the terrain. I had an idea that it was wet and difficult terrain but not to the extent that you described.

I find it amazing that the Soviets were able to pull of such a massive and successful attack through this area. I have no idea how they got heavy vehicles and armor to cross this terrain let alone fight in it. Were the vehicle bogging stats astronomical?

  3. What is the TO&E difference between: Guards Rifle Battalion (43), Guards Rifle Battalion (44)? I guess the number designation is 1943 and 1944.

How far down the chain of command are radio's present?

Here is a little synopsis that I found of one unit that should be present in CM:RT historical scenarios -

"During the Red Army's final drive into Germany, starting with Operation Bagration beginning on 22 June 1944, the 13th Guards Rifles Division was a portion of the 32nd Guards Rifle Corps, which was a portion of the 5th Guards Tank Army, which itself was a portion of the 1st Ukrainian Front. This force drove the Germans back through northern Ukraine and central Poland in to the northern regions of Germany itself. By the end of January 1945, the 1st Ukrainian Front, including the 13th Rifles, had reached the southern outskirts. Here, they participated in the Battle of Berlin and the Battle of the Elbe, where they distinguished themselves yet again while combating the Germans for both of their objectives: Berlin itself and the Teltov Canal. The capture of the latter objective gave the Red Army a river crossing of the Elbe River, allowing the Russians to assault the heart of the Third Reich." source Wikipedia

  4. It is my understanding that Soviet units received the Guards distinction due to exceptional combat performance, and that Rifle and Tank divisions could receive this "honor".

Which Guards units will be present in CM:RT initial release? What sort of quality of equipment and experience/morale/leadership modifiers would be typical for these units?

  5. My post above was based on the following:

Glad you like what you've seen so far!

    1. Not sure if we'll allow Ammo Dumps to be damaged/destroyed. There are "gamey" ramifications that could come from that. In real life you didn't have stockpiles of ammo blowing up all the time at the tactical level. So we're thinking there's some good reasons for that.

    2. Yes, the new Eastern Front game will start out v3.0 as will Black Sea. They're going to come out fairly close together, but we had to pick one to focus on and of the two Black Sea could use the longer time in the oven because it's the first time we've been back to Modern for several years while WW2 is all we've been doing since.

    3. More info about release timing will be out in January. But I can say you won't have to wait too much longer. And I'm talking real world definition of that term, not the one that is in relation to traditional Battlefront concepts of time :D

    4. We've got no plans to extend battles beyond 4 hours. I don't know if we'll extend Quick Battles beyond 2 hours, but I suppose I can kick that one over to Charles and see what he says.

    Steve

  6. Bil, thanks for your effort in putting this AAR together. Very nicely done, and it is a great experience seeing real Soviet tactics in action. Although it would have been better if your tanks and force could have exited the map past GELB rather than having to hang out there.

Those screenshots of the Soviet landscape look amazing in movie mode. GeorgeMC did a great job with the ambiance.

In another thread there is discussion of the fact that the Soviet tanks operated under an SOP in a combat environment such as this, that dictated that they stay buttoned up.

What do you think about this? Was wondering if you would consider buttoning all of your tanks for the remainder of the scenario to showcase this limitation.

  7. Let's put it this way. My contacts are cleared way above President Obama. There are 23 levels of clearance above his. Mine operate in such rarefied realms. If you doubt this, go read my SEAL Team 6 coverage, my black program material, the piece on why Kim Jong-un blinked. The work speaks for itself.

    Regards,

    John Kettler

    John,

Are you sure you haven't gone a bit off the reservation on this one? Maybe you are referring to SCI or SAP?

Here is the result of a quick search. The following is from Wikipedia:

"Information "above Top Secret" is called either Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) or special access program (SAP). It is not truly "above" Top Secret, although that phrase is often used by those in the news and entertainment media. SCI information may be either Secret or Top Secret, but in either case it has additional controls on dissemination beyond those associated with the classification level alone."

  8. Holy Shiite, the Soviet ISU-122 that was knocked out has come back to life and will be creeping its way toward Blau. Forget about vampire snipers, there are much scarier things afoot in the woods.

Elvis really has to use his armor wisely to regain the initiative after last turns horrendous losses. Maybe his scout will be able to spot the ISU's moving again and give him a warning.

  9. As a former opponent of Elvis, I must say that this kind of comments are... unwarranted. He's a crafty player, that knows well the engine and who can only be underestimated at your peril. And who also makes mistakes very much as everyone else, including yours truly.

I wonder how well would his "critics" fare against Bil. It's hard to look good when you're pitted against the very best.

My previous post was not intended to be taken seriously :), except the part about Elvis being commended. He has an interesting approach to this and is causing Soviet casualties. He is a pesky little defender along the lines of a Ken.

  10. Wow!, Oberfeldwebel Schultz and his harassing fire support mission sprint, actually had some success. Looks like he caused a couple of Soviet casualties, and confused the Soviet Commander. Where is that hero, Shultz located now? I really thought it was going to turn out to be a run to the river Styx for Ol' Shultz.

Elvis has apparently invented a new tactic, which is amazing after all of these years of warfare, and he should be commended. The guy is some sort of idiot savant, a mad scientist, the swamp fox, or something, oh well, never mind. He should post an article on Bil's Battle Drill Blog.

  11. Anyone that has been playing CM for a while and reading these forums knows that Mr. Superwoz' post is way off base, and that BFC is totally dedicated to improving the game engine. BFC is also extremely responsive to customer input and requests, and willing to implement changes where practical and possible.

A post like the Superwoz made is really about his own inner turmoil and frustration with aspects of his own life. It is a cry for attention and help.

Let's all take a step back and get beyond the superficiality of his post and take a look at what is really going on for this dude.

I recommend that we all give Superwoz a big group hug.

  12. Enjoyed checking out the videos. More amazing maps by GeorgeMC.

I was also pleased to hear Chris (formerly the dude that was normal) say that they are now adding Red Bull to Charles' brain jar. I imagine that BFC will be churning out at least 4 major releases this year as a result.

  13. No can do. Hide is a state which is incompatible with any other action. You can't BOTH hide AND shoot. It's one or the other. Doesn't matter if you're talking Target, Target Briefly, etc.

Having said that, I do wish we could implement a dedicated Ambush Command. This would have Hide as the default and an Arc as a trigger for opening fire, then be accepting of additional Commands. For example, Ambush + Hide means after there is no enemy in the Arc, go back to Hiding. Or Ambush + move back 50m means engaging the enemy until the Arc is clear and then relocate.

Obviously people can think up with hundreds of new Commands and Command combos. I mean on top of the hundreds you've already suggested over the years :D But at the end of the day we have to code, test, and support all of these. At the end of the day you guys need a reasonable cap on the amount of stuff to manage (even if you don't think you do). It's always a balancing act.

As 2.0 demonstrates, we are willing to expand the Command offerings (Target Briefly). We simply need to be very cautious.

    Steve

Are there any plans to implement the Ambush Command in the near future, or will this have to wait for the CMx2 4.0 engine upgrade?

I know that this has been discussed many times and I am sure it is a significant amount of work, but it would really add to the gameplay and the ability to use real world tactics. This would be great for the human player as well as having it as an option in the Editor for setting the AI to Ambush. Maybe this could be tied to Triggers, or not.
